It’s 2024. Can Technology Drive a New Nigerian Economy?

  • By Emeka Orjih, Technical Adviser on International Cooperation & Finance to Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Nigeria.

Some 20+ years ago, in what keen observers have described as a “leapfrog” and as “the telecom revolution”, Nigeria leapfrogged from 400 thousand landlines to 80 million mobile lines in months. It remains the largest singular developmental stride Nigeria has taken in its 63 years of existence. Structured mass adoption of new technology enabled Nigeria to circumvent normal step-by-step processes to arrive at its destination ahead of time, and ahead of others who were there before them in the Telecom Industry.

Nigeria's Minister of innovation, Science & Technology

Deploying similar strategies, Nigeria can achieve similar outcomes in Clean Energy and Power, and in different areas of Technology. Take  Artificial Intelligence (AI). McKinsey estimates that by the year 2030, the global AI economy will be at $16 trillion annually. (That’s larger than the entire American economy!)

So what will it take for Nigeria to stamp the AI revolution like we did in the Telecoms revolution?
I put this question to Ray Sharma a few weeks ago over dinner in an artsy and eclectic restaurant in London’s Tech City or Silicon Roundabout. Ray is one of earth’s most aggressive Technology Venture Capitalists with successes that include Expedia and Tinder. Ray agreed with me that primarily, it will take human resource.

Human resource is Nigeria’s abundant blessing. After India and China, Nigeria has the highest number of skilled Tech workforce in the diaspora. That’s an army waiting to be unleashed on the innovative gateway.

What about the in-country population?  A whopping 160 million youth – below the age of 35. The vast majority of whom are smart, hungry, innovative, and trainable. Such a resource wealth can catapult any nation on earth when intention and strategy align. Recruit them and funnel them into Frontier Technologies. AI. Blockchain. Robotics. IoT, and the like.

Should Nigeria unleash her potential upon the AI space, with a modest ambition to capture 0.1% of the value of that emerging industry, in just 5 years, she would have created a $16 billion a year industry. And from just AI! Add  Blockchain Technology, Fintech, IoT, Robotics, Clean Tech, Methanol and Hydrogen Production, etc, then you begin to envisage a horizon of endless possibilities.

What’s my point?
With her huge, young, smart, innovative and teachable workforce, plus a seemingly insatiable global tech market, Nigeria could create the kind of alternative national wealth and economy that will dwarf her entire budget and present economy.

Technology enables us to leapfrog, to deliver a Technology revolution, and create a new Nigeria with our international partners.

EdenBase (with Domineum) is partnering with us to create Tech Ecosystems like it did with London Tech City and in Switzerland. We are building out manufacturing capacity for Methanol and EV lithium-ion batteries. These will lay the foundation for our proposed AI-driven Renewable Smart Mini Grids to power our Innovation Parks and Tech Cities plus trigger massive manufacturing (Additive and Green) in partnership with Germany’s IMAPS Institute for Material Applications. We are building out the BPO (and other outsourcing) industry and will partner to prepare millions of Nigerian youth for careers in diverse technology-driven spaces ranging from the soft (data, AI, blockchain, etc) to the hard (hardware skills, welding, digital production, etc). We have partnered to develop and launch the world’s first mass V2X project where we manufacture/assemble Electric Vehicles (EV), powered by Renewable Energy (RE) with bi-directional charging/discharging capabilities that enables your EV to act as a generator that powers homes or factories after performing its ‘car duties’ of ferrying you around. Now that’s what a leapfrog looks like.

Clean energy and Intelligent RE Minigrids – powering and driving manufacturing. Productive Tech ecosystems – partnering world class institutions to trigger innovative startups on scale. These will drive the unleashing of the creativity of Nigeria’s enormous, smart, innovative and youthful population. They, in turn will drive the emergence of the new Nigerian economy, independent of fossil fuels, and constructed on the altar of Innovation, Science & Technology.

In 2024, Nigeria is truly open for business – the Business of Technology, Clean Technology. Those who missed the opportunities unearthed by Nigeria’s telecom revolution some two-decades ago, now have the opportunity to get on board this boundless Tech Revolution in the largest untapped single market on planet earth.

Is it possible to deliver these and more on scale? Can Nigeria leapfrog her way to near the front of the line in clean energy and power generation, green manufacturing and outsourcing?

You bet!
And in Nigeria’s Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, Minister Uche Nnaji is betting on it too.

Global Readers Captivated by The Wisdom of Life as Book Garners Renewed Attention

Three years after its debut publication, The Wisdom of Life by Chinese author Li Yiheng has found a passionate global readership that continues to propel the book into the international spotlight. Originally released domestically in 2020 by Beijing-based publisher Sage World Culture Communication Co., the expansive volume has recently enjoyed a groundswell of praise from literati across continents. Encompassing over two decades of Li’s academic devotion, the opus has progressed from obscurity to international renown at record pace. Its swelling chorus of admirers now hail the tome as a culturally enlightened tour de force bound for widespread influence.

Li Yiheng, the author of the book, published by Beijing Sage World Culture Communication Co., Ltd. in 2020, dedicated over two decades to his work. Committed to revitalizing Chinese culture, he embarked on extensive journeys through developed countries in the East and West to immerse himself in local cultures and traditions. His quest led him to engage with eminent historians, resulting in the resurrection of the profound wisdom embedded in Chinese culture, such as Confucianism, Taoism, and the Art of War. Through his exhaustive efforts, Li Yiheng meticulously crafted scholarly masterpieces and ultimate editions of the “Analects of Confucius,” “Tao Te Ching,” and “Sun Tzu’s Art of War.” The culmination of these endeavors gives birth to The Wisdom of Life.

The author aspires to disseminate the profound wisdom and cultural treasures of ancient China for the betterment of humanity, envisioning a world where common values unite us all. The book points out that the pursuit of peace has been a universal theme throughout the 5,000 years of human civilization. Amidst the tapestry of history, the perennial challenges of human selfishness, greed, deceit, intergroup aggression, international plundering, wars, pestilence, and power dynamics have perennially imperiled humanity’s survival. The unchecked exploitation of the environment and nature, driven by selfish desires and unrestrained technological advancement, threatens to push society to an extreme.

The author meticulously analyzes the means to eradicate injustice and spare humanity from the ravages of war, aiming for a world where everyone has enough to eat and thrive. Drawing inspiration from the Chinese Analects of Confucius, Tao Te Ching, and Sun Tzu’s Art of War, the book envisions an ideal societal state characterized by “the old at peace, friends trustworthy, and the young embraced.” It seeks the pinnacle of social harmony where conflicts are resolved without resorting to aggression, epitomized by the concept of “defeating the enemy without a fight.” This vision presents a utopia, a beacon of global peace longed for by all of humanity.

The profoundness of Chinese culture, with its 2,500-year-old legacy embodied in the Analects of Confucius, Tao Te Ching, and Sun Tzu’s Art of War, continues to influence successive generations. For three millennia, seers from diverse cultures – from the French Nostradamus to contemporary figures like American Jenny Jackson and the Russian “Martian Boy” Poleska – have predicted a force and ideas emanating from the East that would bring about global peace, reshape human civilization, and usher in a new paradigm of world development.

The book emphasizes the ancient wisdom of China, encased in the profound theories of Confucianism, Taoism, and the Art of War, which will captivate the world’s attention. It foresees a future where humanity transcends resource competition, ethnic conflicts, and national disputes, ushering in an era devoid of wars, illnesses, and suffering. This narrative aligns seamlessly with ancient Eastern prophecies such as the Song of Ten Thousand Years, the Lesson Before the Horse, the Pushback Diagram, and the Song of the Burnt Cake, all of which began appearing in China 3,000 years ago and are now finding resonance in contemporary events.

The comprehensive Wisdom of Life systematically examines the 5,000-year arc of human development, advocating for a world liberated from war, disease, and poverty, with peaceful coexistence as its central theme. The author acknowledges the eligibility for simultaneous nomination by the Nobel Literature, Medicine, and Peace Prize, alongside an application for recognition as an Intangible Cultural Heritage — a potential milestone in the annals of human achievement.

His conviction that peace can prevail through the timeless knowledge imparted by sages forms the cornerstone of his work. With its analysis spanning three millennia, including ancient prophecies and canonical texts, the book elevates Chinese intellectual traditions as vital tools for carving a world devoid of conflict and suffering. The intricate fabric of insights Li weaves intersects the prestigious domains of Nobel-recognized literature, medicine, and peace, while aspiring for the honor of being designated as an element of Intangible Cultural Heritage, marking a transformative moment in humanity’s narrative.

Brawijaya Academic develops DAD App to promote safety at Indonesian Rail Crossings

Brawijaya University‘s Prof. Sugiono has developed an application to address safety at public railway crossings in Indonesia. The Double Awareness Driving (DAD) App, which can run on both visual and audio maps, has been developed to increase ‘double awareness’ of crossing safety – for drivers of motor vehicles on the one side, and drivers of trains on the other.

Professor Sugiono shows his Double Awareness Driving (DAD) application, created to raise a ‘double awareness’ of safety for drivers at rail crossings in Indonesia. [IMAGE: ANTARA]

“We want to build awareness in two directions. So far, such a ‘double awareness’ solution, if I may say so, is still partial,” said Prof. Ir. Sugiono, ST., MT., Ph.D., Professor of Transport Ergonomics at Brawijaya’s Industrial Engineering Department.

In the first stage, the DAD App will serve drivers as well as pedestrians at certain railway crossings, especially those without gate barriers. The App works like Google Maps, providing information to travelers on the railway crossings they will encounter from the beginning of their journey until they arrive at their destination.

“For example, the App user will receive optimal route information from point A to point B, along with the railway crossings that he will cross on the route,” said Sugiono. Based on this information, drivers and pedestrians can remain alert and careful at railway crossings, he said, particularly at rail crossings without gates.

Besides providing information on routes and crossings at the start of a journey, the App processes information in real-time. “500 meters before the crossing, the alert is still green. Then, 500-100 meters approaching the crossing, it will become yellow, and at 100 meters, it will be red and sound an alarm. This increases awareness when crossing,” he said.

In the second stage, the DAD App will not only increase awareness among motorists but will be implemented for train operators as well. “The App’s next stage is intended to improve on the existing solution, which focuses on the crossing area. Train operators have not yet been comprehensively involved,” said Sugiono.

According to the Professor, train operators will benefit from real-time information for the crossings they will pass. Presently, operators rely on orders or signal lights when entering a crossing. “Operators also need information, as they base duties on the signal. With DAD, the operator can make decisions when conditions are dangerous,” he said.

The ultimate goal of the DAD App is to form an Early Warning System. Currently, the University is in the process of patenting the application, which in future will be offered for integration into Google Maps. “If we cooperate with Google Maps, it will be easier as they use satellites, so even without an internet network, our App will be okay,” he said.

In 2022, the number of accidents that occurred at railway crossings reached 289, as many as 6.02 incidents some weeks. Based on Brawijaya’s records, there are 2,259 crossings in Indonesia without crossbars or officers, with as many as 87 percent or 251 accidents occurring at these unmanned crossings. DAD’s efforts are expected to reduce these numbers.

Seven Stars unlock their extraordinary ability to earn a US Green Card in 6-months of 2023

Amongst the hardships caused by the Green Card backlog, especially for Indians in the USA who are highly specialized professionals amongst millions of aspiring immigrants, seven-star students have successfully fulfilled their US dream with the Next League Program. The Next League Program is a holistic approach to obtaining the EB1A Green Card, accentuating personal growth and development, self-discovery, and unlocking the actual extraordinary ability of an individual.

The United States has since long practiced and made efforts by offering opportunities and preferential treatment to highly talented immigrants across Arts, Business, Education, and Sciences. Vivek B Ramu, competent in Software Performance Testing in Connecticut, expressed his journey, “EB1A seemed daunting until I joined the Next League Program. Principal Coach Ranjeet’s structured approach has boosted my confidence, and I’m now on track to achieve my EB1A goals.”

Over the years, these preferences have enabled gifted individuals, including Nobel Laureates, Business Professionals, World Class Athletes, and Renowned Artists, to immigrate to the US and live in the United States. Siddharth Sharma, a Leader in HR Digital Solutions, USA reflected on his experience, “After researching EB1A, I found the Next League Program. Ranjeet’s clarity and mentorship have been transformative, making this one of my best decisions.”

Rathnakumar Udayakumar, a Data Professional from California, USA, remarked on the program’s impact: “Joining the program opened my eyes to the importance of personal growth in the EB1A process. Ranjeet’s transformative guidance changed my perspective on the program and myself.”

Principal Coach and CEO of Next League Executive Board LLC, Ranjeet S Mudholkar (also an EB1A recipient in 2017) said, “The Next League Program is designed for highly competent professionals who can obtain their EB1A Green Card without sponsorship, lottery, or a million-dollar investment. I am delighted to coach, mentor, and guide skilled professionals to sharpen their saws to establish their thought leadership in the category. To support the Einstein-category intellects, the Next League Board LLC aims to nurture admission of global super-talent into the US.”

The Next League Board LLC aims to contribute to the US by facilitating the best global talent to its shores. Sushil Vellanki, proficient in Geospatial Engineering and Logistics, USA, highlighted the program’s benefits, “Discovering the EB1A category was a revelation. Ranjeet and the Next League Program have provided the guidance I needed to bridge the gaps in my profile and prepare for EB1A.”

Jayendran Gopalsami, a Supply Chain Management Expert in North Carolina, USA, supports the program’s methodology, stating, “What sets Next League apart is its holistic approach. It’s not just about EB1A; it’s about personal growth. The program’s curated content and coaching have accelerated my journey.”

A Digital Transformation Expert from a Global Consulting Firm in the USA shared, “Ranjeet demystified the EB1A process for me, emphasizing its essence over mere formalities. He clarified what the US seeks in immigrants and guided me through the logical steps of the application.”

Drawing on philosophical concepts of Absurdism and the Socratic Method, the program encourages individuals to create meaning in their lives and question their assumptions, beliefs, and values. The Next League Program applies this concept by encouraging individuals to control their destinies and trust their abilities without compromising the overall impact. This mindset helps individuals become their best version, establishing their extraordinary skills.

The 6-month intense Coaching Program for students pursuing their American Dream to be a US Resident by applying for the EB1A Green Card, aka Einstein Visa, consists of three phases:

Phase I: Profile Enhancement

Phase II: Scaling Knowledge Base and becoming a thought leader in your respective domain

Phase III: Creating Outreach

The Next League Program is a remote program most suited for Subject Matter Experts or professionals between 24 and 50 years of age with progressive experience in their field. In addition to its philosophical foundations, the Next League Program provides practical tools and resources to aid in the EB1A Green Card process. With access to experienced immigration lawyers, a supportive community of like-minded individuals, and personalized coaching and guidance tailored to each individual’s unique needs and goals.

The United States of America is united by grand and enduring ideals, aspiring to draw the world’s best and brightest talent to American shores. Folashade Orimogunje, a Data Science Expert from the Dept. of Health, USA, emphasized the program’s transformative nature: “Joining the Next League Program was a pivotal decision. It’s not just about immediate goals but setting one up for future endeavors. Ranjeet’s experience and guidance have been invaluable.”

Singapore-headquartered Global Schools Foundation (GSF) has entered a strategic partnership with Witty Group of Institutions from India. Witty Group of Institutions has campuses in Mumbai, Udaipur and Bhilwara, where they offer international curricula like Cambridge IGCSE and A Levels, as well as Indian curricula like CBSE and ICSE. The schools are known for their values-based education with special emphasis on kindling students’ interest in innovative pursuits to make them inquisitive, informed, self-aware and ethical citizens.

“We are delighted to welcome the Witty Group into the GSF network. We share a vision of providing quality education to students. Our collaboration is sure to greatly benefit the student community by encouraging ideation and peer-to-peer interactions at a global level,” said Mr Atul Temurnikar, GSF Co-Founder and Executive Chairman.
