CleverTap Predicts Key Trends for Customer Engagement in 2025

AI Agents, Customer-Led Interactions And Other Defining Trends Take Center Stage in CleverTap’s 2025 Customer Engagement Trend Predictions

CleverTap, the all-in-one customer engagement platform, has published a report on the top five trends that will shape the marketing and customer engagement space in 2025. It provides an analysis of the future of the customer engagement and retention landscape, offering insights into the strategies companies are expected to adopt in the upcoming year.

image

With the initial euphoria of GenAI waning out in just a year, organizations are in the midst of conversations about its tangible business value and outcomes. As AI transitions from being a disruptor to an enabler in 2025, here are some key customer engagement and retention trends that are sure to make an impact in 2025.

1. From Push to Pull: Generative AI-driven Wave of Customer Interactions
With GenAI’s mass adoption in 2024, communication has moved from brand-led to customer-led. Industries saw a shift in their customers using queries as their primary medium to interact with the brand. 2025 will further solidify this trend from brand-driven click and swipe-based interactions (push) to user-driven, prompt-based dynamic, conversational experiences (pull) powered by GenAI. While the number of touchpoints for marketers will be reduced, the quality of exchange will become more important once businesses understand how to optimize it. The rise of GenAI will continue to bring high efficiency, enabling brands to gain real-time insights and feedback, and empowering them to make swift improvements.

2. Personalization vs Privacy: Navigating a Balanced Approach
Personalization is the norm for marketers. However, for today’s customers, hyper-personalisation only works when executed contextually and transparently. Marketers therefore will have to take a privacy-first approach while crafting meaningful experiences. Moving forward, investment in mechanisms for first-party and zero-party data collection will be vital, along with strict adherence to privacy regulations. By prioritizing transparency and safeguarding user data, businesses can foster deeper trust and loyalty among their customers.

3. Martech’s Evolution from a Fixed Tech Stack to a Living Cartography
The Martech landscape is changing rapidly to meet new demands and most businesses still operate with rigid and fragmented tech stacks consisting of traditional siloed tools. This poses a challenge for marketers as the failure of one tool can create a domino effect causing problems in the entire stack. To address this, the concept of “living cartography” holds immense promise. Unlike traditional stacks, this concept envisions a dynamic, interconnected ecosystem where tools adapt and evolve in real-time. This approach fosters seamless data exchange and reduces the risk of system-wide failures by minimizing dependencies across tools. For marketers, this shift means greater agility in meeting the growing demand of ever-changing customer preferences.

4. The Rise of AI Agents
AI agents are the next evolution in the AI landscape, poised to grow significantly this year. Their value lies in the ability to act beyond basic response mechanisms, driving smarter interactions. Companies will focus on AI agent functionalities to analyze real-time sentiments and tailor recommendations for customers while also providing 24/7 multi-lingual support. From a business standpoint, the use case will include boosting operational efficiency and improving decision-making. Eventually, we will see AI clones of marketers for processes like customer support, and sales interactions. AI copilots will enable businesses to get a competitive edge by automating tasks and optimizing workflows.

5. Customer Retention over Acquisition
The current economic and geopolitical situation alongside a shift in customer priorities has exacerbated the challenge of acquiring new customers, making the process more expensive as well. Companies have recognized the value of customer loyalty as opposed to the “growth at any cost” outlook and the industry is now focussing on customer retention as a strategic priority. In addition to hyper-personalization, brands will continue to innovate their loyalty programs and incentives to meet customer expectations.

Anand Jain, Co-founder and Chief Product Officer, CleverTap said, “AI’s promise in marketing will truly come alive in 2025 – where it will transition from being a mere disruptor to a trusted enabler, unlocking authentic, customer-driven engagement. As brands navigate this new paradigm, success will come down to building genuine connections and striking a healthy balance between personalization and privacy, all while staying adaptable in the face of customer demands. At CleverTap, we remain committed to guiding businesses through these shifts, empowering them to advance their capabilities and drive meaningful, enduring customer relationships.”

CleverTap Report: 46% of Product Managers Cite Resource Limitations as Top Barrier to App and Web Experimentation

CleverTap, the all-in-one engagement platform, has released its market research report on “The State of App and Web User Experience Optimization”. The report sheds light on how digital-first brands are leveraging experimentation and personalization on their apps and websites to drive customer engagement and business growth. It also highlights roadblocks faced by marketers and product managers while experimenting with the UI, workflows, and functionality across apps and websites.

For a thorough understanding of the current landscape, this report draws insights from a diverse group of respondents – with data gathered through structured surveys and in-depth interviews – representing organizations with over two million customers across 50+ countries. This includes VPs, CMOs, and product managers ranging from startups to large enterprises across various industries. – Together, they offer valuable insights into how businesses optimize app and web experiences to drive customer engagement and business growth.

While 95% of surveyed product managers and 88% of marketers believe that the right user experience is essential for driving customer engagement and retention — many report significant challenges to effectively experimenting with app and web user experiences. Despite recognizing its importance, they reported difficulties such as limited resources, data gaps, and technical constraints that hinder their ability to innovate and deliver impactful user experiences.

Other notable findings from the report include –

  • 81.9% of product managers rarely experiment with their app and web experiences before making changes to them. The top challenges quoted include lack of resources (46%), inadequate data and analytics (31%), and technical issues (19%)
  • 54% of product managers are unable to support marketers in experimenting with onboarding flows, banner placement, homepage content and other similar app and web experiences.
  • 81% of marketers believe it would make a significant impact if they could independently experiment with multiple variations of web and app experiences within a no-code framework provided by their product management function.

Commenting on the report, Jacob Joseph, Vice President – Data Science, CleverTap said, “With consumer expectations constantly rising, brands need to go beyond perfecting their channel strategies and also focus on enhancing the in-app and web experiences to drive results from their marketing efforts. Since all channels ultimately lead users to the app or website, an unsatisfactory experience there can render all your efforts ineffective and become a missed opportunity. Personalization and experimentation on apps and websites are critical to reducing churn and driving growth, yet resource constraints and data gaps hinder marketers and product managers. We are committed to helping businesses navigate these challenges with CleverTap’s Product Experiences, which offers effortless ways to personalize and experiment with app and web experiences driving stronger engagement and lasting brand loyalty.”

CleverTap, the all-in-one engagement platform has been recognized as a ‘Strong Performer’ in The Forrester Wave™: Cross-Channel Marketing Hubs, Q4 2024. The report evaluated 14 top global vendors across 28 criteria, including experience optimization, identity resolution and privacy, customer analytics, and mobile.

CleverTap received its highest scores in three key evaluation criteria – Experience optimization, mobile, and pricing flexibility and transparency. Moreover, CleverTap is also among the only three vendors, out of the top 14 global providers evaluated, to receive ‘above average’ customer feedback, which, we believe is a testament to the positive feedback from CleverTap customers, signifying trust and loyalty with the brand.

Anand Jain, Co-founder and Chief Product Officer, CleverTap said, “At CleverTap, our focus has always been on empowering brands to deliver personalized experiences that resonate deeply with their audiences. And we believe that being recognized as a Strong Performer in the Forrester Wave™ CCMH Hubs 2024 report not only validates our commitment but also strengthens our resolve to continue setting new standards in customer engagement and growth.”

The Forrester Wave™ Cross Channel Marketing Hubs, Q4 2024 report states that “CleverTap offers an all-in-one platform for midsize enterprises; larger enterprises should consider its verticalized solutions to complement their Cross-Channel Marketing Hub (CCMH) ecosystem.” Customers trust CleverTap; one noted how it understands their tech needs to integrate across marketing, CRM, and operations. The company’s vision for inconspicuous engagement, based on customer consent and anticipation – resonates well, as does its view that MarTech should be a living cartography or ecosystem rather than a fixed stack. Additionally, IntelliNODE stands out as an embedded AI copilot that creates a network of experiments and automatically determines winning engagement paths, balancing individual and broader segment optimization.

57% of Banking Executives Struggle with Data Silos, Blocking AI-Driven Personalization, CleverTap’s New Report Highlights

CleverTap, the all-in-one engagement platform, today released its latest Market Research Report with insights into the global banking landscape, “Banking on AI: A Leader’s Guide to Customer Engagement Excellence in Banking”. The report reveals that 57% of banking executives have yet to achieve a unified customer view, indicating significant challenges with data silos due to technological barriers and cost constraints. These data challenges are impacting banks’ ability to deliver personalized, seamless customer experiences in an era where AI-driven engagement is becoming essential.

The research explores the transformative shift within the banking sector leveraging AI to address modern banking challenges, including the need for personalized and secure digital experiences amid rapid digital transformation. Through this study, CleverTap set out to identify where the AI opportunity lies for banks and introduced its strategic framework to help banks build excellence in customer engagement, along with highlighting key trends for Banks in customer engagement within the AI space, while understanding the challenges and opportunities faced by banking leaders. Furthermore, the company also assessed AI’s role in enhancing customer experiences.

The methodology included a survey of 50 senior executives in India’s banking sector, in-depth interviews for qualitative insights, and analysis of industry benchmarks and best practices. This research covered banks with a combined total asset size of about $3.03 trillion, spanning APAC, the Middle East, North America, LATAM, and the EU.

Insights from the report reveal that 3 out of 4 banking executives may be missing out on critical opportunities to build customer loyalty and drive sustainable growth, as they focus heavily on short-term revenue targets. To effectively balance short-term metrics with long-term financial outcomes, banks need to harness advanced analytics that not only track current performance but also predict future customer behaviors.

To assess the gaps and identify opportunities for the banking sectors in the age of AI, CleverTap has developed a framework that will serve as a foundation to improve customer experiences and drive long-term value. CleverTap’s Core Four Framework – encompassing Trust, Technology, Touchpoints, and Transactions – is designed to help banks transition from product-focused to customer-centric approaches, cultivating deeper relationships and delivering phy-gital experiences. The research covers the nuances for retail banks, neo-banks, and specialized banks, providing insights across the four core pillars.

Key gaps identified basis of the framework include:

  • Loyal customers generate 2.5x higher transaction value than others, and referred prospects are 3.5x more likely to onboard. However, 50% of banking executives do not effectively leverage their high-NPS (Net Promoter Score) customers
  • 57% of banking executives have yet to implement a unified customer view, suggesting issues with data silos. The primary obstacles to unification are technological challenges and associated costs
  • 41% of banking executives are not using real-time segmentation capabilities, limiting their ability to deliver timely and personalized communication
  • Banks using more than four channels in their engagement campaigns see a 53% improvement in conversions compared to those using fewer than four channels, yet only about 33% of banks have adopted this approach

Banks can harness the power of the Core Four by implementing a comprehensive AI strategy, as detailed in CleverTap’s report Banking on AI: A Leader’s Guide to Customer Engagement Excellence in Banking.

This approach consists of three key stages:

  • Operational Optimizers focus on using AI to enhance operational efficiency through the automation of routine tasks and improved workflow processes
  • Personalization & Experimentation Architects where AI is applied to improve orchestration while personalizing interactions and conducting experiments at scale to boost conversion
  • Strategic Innovators showcase the use of AI for automating strategic decision-making and providing deeper insights for long-term planning

Commenting on the report, Jacob Joseph, VP – Data Science, CleverTap said, “The banking sector has often played catch-up when it comes to tech innovations, but customer familiarity with digital solutions is making it clear that banks need to bridge this divide quickly. The banking sector often remains a ‘follower’ in tech adoption. This cautious stance means banks typically wait for proof of concept before fully embracing new technologies. Our latest report dives into how AI can bridge the current gaps in customer experience and operational efficiency, helping banks not only meet evolving customer expectations but exceed them. By deploying integrated, AI-powered solutions, banks can deliver the hyper-personalized experiences today’s customers expect, building lasting trust and loyalty. For banks aiming to stay competitive in a digital-first world, AI isn’t optional – it’s essential.”

Looking ahead at the future of the banking sector with AI, CleverTap’s latest insights highlight six transformative AI outlooks that are poised to redefine customer engagement and operations:

  • Customer engagement for banking is driven by innovations like synthetic data, which enhances analytics without compromising privacy
  • Banks are also prioritizing emotional engagement, using AI to create immersive experiences and personalized gamification that fosters customer loyalty
  • Modernizing MarTech through AI-powered ecosystems allows banks to integrate data and services seamlessly, enhancing customer experiences
  • A shift towards a customer-centric approach, leveraging AI for dynamic personalization, further strengthens relationships and retention
  • Additionally, implementing responsible AI frameworks builds trust by ensuring transparency  and compliance
  • Finally, the collaboration with fintech firms through AI-powered open banking creates holistic financial ecosystems, offering a wider range of services and real-time insights to customers, thereby increasing trust and engagement
