Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair opens next month

– Over 600 exhibitors from 20 countries and regions, Mainland China participation up by 60% year-on-year
– Showcasing the world’s finest wines and spirits, including Chinese wines and baijiu, Japanese sake and shochu, vodka, brandy, and more
– Inaugural Sommelier’s Picks will engage renowned sommeliers to feature their favourite wine lists to industry professionals and the public

The 16th HKTDC Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair will be held on 7-9 November at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC), showcasing fine wines and spirits from around the world, along with related products and services to trade visitors and buyers.

With Hong Kong reducing the liquor duty rate, as announced during the Policy Address last week, to promote liquor trade and boost the development of high value-added industries, the Wine & Spirits Fair will enable the industry to seize opportunities presented by this measure.

Sophia Chong, Deputy Executive Director of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), said: “To cater to consumers’ more sophisticated and diverse appreciation for wines, this year’s Wine & Spirits Fair offers a diverse range of wines and spirits from around the world to enhance the tasting experience and promote knowledge of wine through a series of special events. The market for Chinese baijiu and wine is thriving, especially following the recent proposal by the Hong Kong SAR Government to reduce taxes for high-end liquor. This year’s Fair brings together more than 600 exhibitors, with a notable increase in those showcasing Chinese baijiu and spirits around the world. Overall, participation from Mainland China has increased by 60% by scale compared to the previous year. The HKTDC is actively recruiting more buyers to take part in the Fair, further promoting Hong Kong as a regional trading hub for wine and spirits.”

This year’s Fair will bring together more than 600 exhibitors from 20 countries and regions. In addition to exhibitors from Hong Kong and the Mainland China, there are overseas exhibitors from all over the world, including those from Belarus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Poland, and the United Kingdom from Europe.

Exhibitors from the Americas included Argentina, Canada, Chile, Mexico and the United States. Australia, Japan and the Philippines make up the Asia-Pacific representation, while South Africa will participate for the first time.

A global showcase for exquisite wines and spirits
The Wine & Spirits Fair will feature a diverse range of alcoholic beverages, including old-world and new-world wines, Chinese wines, Japanese sake as well as spirits from around the world, including Chinese baijiu, Japan’s shochu, vodka and brandy. A variety of whiskies will also be showcased in both the Ireland and Japan pavilions.

Exhibited beverages include:
– Azienda Agricola Sciara 760 Metri Etna Rosso, making its fair debut, crafted by Stef Yim, Hong Kong’s first winemaker to set up a winery and vineyards at Mount Etna in Sicily, Italy. The nutrients from the volcanic mud and the high-altitude environment give this red wine its special aroma and flavour;
– Zhenjiu, Chinese Baijiu from Guizhou in Mainland China, a high-end sauce aroma aijiu. Its rich and full body with a complex layering of spice and fermented bean flavors leaves a long-lasting aftertaste;
– Fenjiu from Shanxi, traditional Chinese liquor crafted mainly from sorghum, which epitomises the light aroma style of baijiu with its crystal-clear appearance and a delightful aroma;
– Clonakilty Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey, winner of two global awards, triple-distilled and matured on the Atlantic coastline in Clonakilty, Ireland. It presents flavours of sweet vanilla, toffee apple, salted caramel and wood spices, with a dark chocolate and orange finish;
– Wabi Sabi Gin, developed by Japan’s pioneering female spirits entrepreneur Wakae. This gin features 13 botanicals, including Japanese citrus herbs and roses from Shimane Prefecture, creating layered flavours and a long finish;
– Ukishiro Sakitama Kodaishu 20 years aged by Yokota Sake Brewery, which has won 22 gold medals in the Annual Japan Sake Awards;
– Vinette Premium Canned Wines, a distinguished South African brand and gold medalist in the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge, renowned for crafting premium table wines in innovative aluminium cans.

The Wine & Spirits Fair also features the Friends of Wine zone, which showcases a variety of gourmet foods designed to complement the wines. Some exhibitors, such as Asia Wine Service & Education Centre (AWSEC), will also introduce their services that promote the industry’s all-round development.

Multiple events explore market trends
Conferences, tasting sessions and seminars hosted by world-class Masters of Wine, sommeliers and industry professionals, will analyse trends in various markets, while offering attendees an opportunity to sample fine wines from around the world.

A series of seminars and workshops on Public Day
To encourage residents to adopt green living practices, talks and workshops will be held on the last day of the Expo (2 November), which are free and open to the public. A highlight will be the Dialogue with the Secretary for Environment and Ecology for school students. Experts will share their strategies and experience in tackling extreme weather. • On-site survey reveals industry expecting ideal market potential for wearable products and robotics technology

– The two major electronics fairs concluded today, attracting over 60,000 industry buyers from 136 countries and regions
– 53% of respondents in an on-site survey expect overall sales to increase over the next 12-24 months, while 43% expect sales to remain stable
– Most respondents believe there is a “very promising” or “promising” market potential for wearable electronic products (65%) and robotics technology (59%)

The Hong Kong Electronics Fair (Autumn Edition), organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), and electronicAsia, jointly organised by the HKTDC and MMI Asia Pte Ltd, concluded their physical exhibitions today.

The four-day events attracted more than 60,000 industry buyers from 136 countries and regions. The number of buyers from Malaysia, Türkiye, Argentina and the UAE increased from last year. This reflects the exhibitions’ status as important sourcing platforms for the industry.

Sophia Chong, Deputy Executive Director of the HKTDC, said: “The global trend towards smart living is driving demand for innovative products and solutions. The Electronics Fair and electronicAsia serve as efficient platforms for the industry, enabling exhibitors to showcase their electronic products and technology solutions to buyers. We are pleased to see exhibitors and buyers successfully exploring business opportunities at the exhibitions, which are expediting Hong Kong’s development into an international innovation and technology (I&T) centre.”

In late October, the HKTDC will host the Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Autumn Edition), Hong Kong International Outdoor and Tech Light Expo and ECO Expo Asia to create more cross-industry business opportunities.

Industry optimistic about India, the Middle East, Latin America
An independent survey agency commissioned by the HKTDC interviewed 1,091 Electronics Fair buyers and exhibitors about growth prospects for the industry. 53% of respondents expect overall sales to increase in the next 12-24 months, while 43% anticipate that they will remain stable. Most respondents believe that the electronics industry has the most growth potential in emerging markets, such as India, the Middle East and Latin America over the next two years, followed by Korea, Mainland China, Australia and the Pacific Islands.

In terms of trends in electronic products, most respondents believe there is a “very promising” or “promising” market potential for wearable electronic products (65%) and robotics technology (59%).

Meanwhile, 56% of respondents believe that the market potential for e-sports products and equipment is high. Most respondents consider these products to have the greatest growth potential in North America and Northern and Western Europe.

Exhibitors attract quality buyers at fairs
This year’s Electronics Fair featured more than 20 zones, gathering the latest electronic products and innovative solutions from global exhibitors in areas such as smart cities, smart mobility, gerontechnology and digital entertainment.

First-time exhibitor and Founder of Zunosaki Limited, Newmen Ho, promoted the company’s hand rehabilitation robot in the Startup Zone, seeking Mainland China and overseas distributors, partners and investors. In the first half of the exhibition, he met potential buyers from Taiwan’s nursing homes and from Korea. Additionally, a buyer from India expressed interest in applying the company’s robotic hand technology across different industries.

Hong Kong’s renowned consumer electronics brand Momax achieved impressive results at the fair. The company’s Founder and CEO John Cheng stated that in the first two days of the Fair, the team met some 60 buyers from the Asia-Pacific region and Europe. Momax also formed a long-term partnership with a publicly listed company in Papua New Guinea and is currently discussing an initial order valued at US$50,000.

Additionally, through HKTDC’s Click2Match smart business matching platform, the company connected with another quality buyer from Australia, with the intent to collaborate long-term. Mr Cheng said: “Hong Kong’s exhibitions are world-class, featuring high-quality buyers from a diverse range of countries. This year’s Autumn Electronics Fair saw a significant turnout, and the buyers were very engaged. We will definitely participate again next year.”

Dongguan Maochang Printed Circuit Board Ltd, which develops technological solutions, participated in electronicAsia to stay updated on industry trends and identify potential buyers. The company’s Sales Director, Michael Tsang, said: “Expanding onto the international stage is our primary goal for participating in the exhibition. I am glad that we met with over 200 potential buyers in the first three days to gain a deeper understanding of customer needs.”

Buyer seeks new products to expand market
Vinal Patel, Chief Commercial Officer of UK buyer Brand Collective, has been attending the Electronics Fair for over 20 years. During the first two days of this year’s fair, he secured over US$2 million worth of purchases, including charging cables, power banks and wireless speakers from two exhibitors. He is also considering expanding the range of products he distributes after discovering new offerings at the Fair. Mr Patel said: “The line-up at the exhibition gets better every year, even more impressive than before the pandemic. I will definitely participate in the Electronics Fairs in April and October in the future.”

Turkish buyer and Co-founder of Robotistan Elektronik Tic AS, Yusuf Gündogdu, visited electronicAsia with a purchasing budget of around U$100,000-200,000 for electronic products. He said: “The Electronics Fair is the best opportunity for me to interact face-to-face with exhibitors from around the world. I always find the best prices here. Meeting the founders of start-ups in the Startup Zone excites me. These companies are poised to become some of the best in the future and will drive market development through innovation, which I eagerly look forward to.”

The organisers held 78 events and forums during the exhibitions, inviting industry leaders to share unique insights and the latest industry information. These events included the Symposium on Innovation & Technology, Hong Kong Electronic Forum and Reliability Assurance for Electronic Systems Forum. Other on-site activities catered to start-ups, including investment matching, the Hong Kong Value Creation for Technology: Pitching Competition, Meet the Mentors sessions and Start-up Smart Launch.

Under the EXHIBITION+ hybrid model, exhibitors and buyers can use the Click2Match smart business matching platform to conduct online meetings, in addition to attending the physical fair. Exhibitors and buyers can still explore business opportunities and conduct online negotiations through Click2Match until 23 October.

HKTDC welcomes 2024 Policy Address

– Reinforces eight centre advantages for high-quality economic development

The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) welcomes the 2024 Policy Address, delivered today by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’s (HKSAR) Chief Executive John Lee.

The Policy Address presents a comprehensive set of measures, ranging from the economy and trade and people’s livelihood to high-calibre talent attraction and youth development. Leveraging Hong Kong’s one country, two systems advantages, the policies will fuel the city’s continued economic growth.

Dr Peter K N Lam, Chairman of the HKTDC, said: “The Policy Address highlights the Hong Kong SAR Government’s efforts in seeking innovation and change, while striving for excellence. It addresses a wide range of areas covering economic growth, trade and investment, SME support, culture and creative as well as construction and planning. Riding on Hong Kong’s eight centre advantages, the Policy Address promotes new quality productive forces and high-quality economic development.”

The annual address announced various measures to reinforce the city’s status as an international financial, shipping and trading centre. Dr Lam believed the move echoes the 20th Central Committee’s Third Plenary Session’s Resolution to develop Hong Kong into a supply chain service centre: “The HKTDC will continue to proactively promote Hong Kong’s eight centre advantages and enhance the development of high value-added supply chain services. We will step up cooperation with InvestHK to set up a mechanism and enhance the interface for attracting mainland enterprises to establish their international or regional headquarters in Hong Kong and provide one-stop diversified professional advisory services to help them go global via the Hong Kong platform.”

He added that the HKTDC will strengthen advisory services of its Transformation Sandbox (T-box) programme to cover a wider range of areas and support Hong Kong enterprises as well as mainland companies in Hong Kong in regard to business transformation, sustainable development and operational upgrade. Businesses are encouraged to leverage the HKTDC’s trade platforms and events to go global and explore international market opportunities, especially in the high-potential ASEAN region.

Dr Lam welcomed the HKSAR Government’s SME support measures, including the relaunch of the Principal Moratorium scheme, a HK$1 billion injection into the BUD Fund and an additional HK$500 million provision for the Incentive Scheme for Recurrent Exhibitions 2.0. He believes the measures will foster SMEs’ sustainable development and reinforce Hong Kong’s role as a leading convention and exhibition hub.

The Policy Address stated the Hong Kong Shopping Festival will be relaunched in the next two years to help SMEs tap into the mainland e-commerce sales market. Dr Lam said: “The inaugural Hong Kong Shopping Festival organised by the HKTDC in August this year received an enthusiastic response. Not only did it raise participants’ brand exposure, but also provided them with practical experience in e-commerce operations. We will build on this year’s success and host the second edition of the Festival next August, and in the ASEAN market in due course, to enable Hong Kong SMEs to explore market opportunities via e-commerce and social media platforms.”

To help SMEs understand e-commerce marketing, the HKTDC will publish research reports and analyses on e-commerce ecosystems in different markets, such as ASEAN, to help businesses lay a solid foundation in e-commerce operations. Through its Digital Academy and Design Gallery’s (DG) cross-border e-commerce shops on Taobao and JD International, the HKTDC has been offering comprehensive support to Hong Kong SMEs to leverage diverse e-commerce and digital marketing channels to explore mainland opportunities. DG’s 70 physical sales network in the mainland serve as an ideal platform to promote Hong Kong brands in the region. As for the ASEAN market, the HKTDC’s DG Studio programme helps connect local businesses with ASEAN physical retailers and e-commerce platforms.

In terms of strengthening SMEs’ brand development, the HKTDC will continue to organise some 40 international exhibitions and conferences in Hong Kong every year. We will also set up more Hong Kong Pavilions in mainland and overseas exhibitions and further enhance business matching, to support SMEs in developing their brand and tapping global opportunities.

On promotion of Hong Kong’s cultural and creative industries, as mentioned in the Policy Address, more Hong Kong, mainland and overseas cultural and creative products will be added to the Asia IP Exchange (AsiaIPEX), managed by the HKTDC, to facilitate cross-sector exchanges and cooperation and contribute to Hong Kong’s development into a regional IP trading centre. Currently, the platform displays more than 28,000 IP projects available for trading. The HKTDC will continue to promote cultural and creative products as well as IP transformation and trading on its platforms, such as the Business of IP Asia Forum, Hong Kong International Licensing Show and the Hong Kong International Film and TV Market.

Dr Lam also welcomed measures addressing new quality productive forces, the Northern Metropolis, digital economy and silver economy, which will help Hong Kong businesses further explore opportunities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and Belt and Road countries and regions.

Addressing the reduction of the liquor duty rate, Dr Lam believes that the move will strengthen related trade and further promote Hong Kong as a regional wine trading hub. He added that the 16th Hong Kong International Wine and Spirits Fair will be held from 7 to 9 November, which will showcase fine wines from around the world, including liquors and white wines in the mainland pavilions, whiskeys from Japan and Ireland and spirits from around the world. Fair seminars will highlight the prospects of Hong Kong’s spirits market, while Chinese liquor promotional events will help the industry seize new opportunities.

In conclusion, Dr Lam said: “The HKTDC will continue to support and complement national development and the Hong Kong SAR Government’s policies. We will work closely with the business community to leverage Hong Kong’s advantages and promote sustainable economic growth.”

Standard Chartered GBA Business Confidence Survey shows softer business performance in Q3

– Sentiment continues to improve, Hong Kong has the highest expectations

Standard Chartered and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) today released the Standard Chartered GBA Business Confidence Index (GBAI) for the third quarter of 2024. The “expectations” index rose for a second straight quarter to 55.2 from 54.8 in Q2, reflecting sentiment continued to improve modestly among firms. The “current performance” index for business activity fell to 50.6 from 54.1 in Q2, indicating a further weakening of economic momentum after a challenging first half of 2024.

Hong Kong leads bulls
At city level, Hong Kong and Dongguan registered improvements in both current performance and expectations sub-indices. Hong Kong posted the highest “expectations” index, rising to 58.8 from 49.7 in Q2, the steepest rise among the 11 Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area cities, while “current performance” slightly increased by 0.2 points to 47.3. The “expectations” index of the other five cities in the survey were all above the 50 neutral mark.

In line with the soft set of China macro data in July and August, the sub-indices for industry categories trended down in general, with the manufacturing sector suffering the most. In terms of “expectations”, while GBA manufacturers’ confidence may have been affected by a potential surge in US tariffs against China-origin products in the event of a Trump win in the November US presidential election, the score remained stable at 54.1, well above the neutral mark.

Kelvin Lau, Senior Economist, Greater China, Standard Chartered, said: “The survey findings are in line with the economic data released in August, pointing to a slower industrial production, retail sales and fixed asset investment growth on subdued domestic demand and adverse weather. Nevertheless, it is noteworthy that the optimism associated with China’s stronger-than-expected stimulus package introduced in late-September, together with the new phase of Fed’s rate cut cycle, has yet to reflect in the third quarter survey findings. We believe the business sentiment among GBA companies can be boosted in the near term, driven by the positive sentiment and jump in equity market turnover following the announcement of the stimulus measures.”

60% GBA companies express concerns over risk factors – rates, economic growth and trade barriers topped the list
While the rate-cutting cycle can serve as a tailwind to business, the market outlook remains challenging. 60% of respondents saw external and internal risks posing a substantial risk to their overall business in the next 12 months. “Higher global inflation and interest rates” (47%), “renewed China growth slowdown” (46%) and “trade tariffs, sanctions against China-origin products” (42%) were the top three concerns. The Fed’s recent jumbo rate cut in September, signalling potential relief to GBA companies, likely offset lingering trade and geopolitical risks in the run-up to the US presidential election.

During the survey period, the discussion on tariff hikes against products of Chinese origin arose again. In terms of trade barriers, 47.2% of respondents said they were negatively impacted by tariff hikes versus 44.2% by sanctions and 34.6% by non-tariff barriers.

In the event of further rise in trade disputes between China and the US/EU, of the 37% survey respondents involved in external trade and anticipating a change to their external trade in the next few months, 88% said they would front-load their second-half export orders, while 81% said they would front-load their imports to minimise the potential impacts to their businesses.

Irina Fan, HKTDC Director of Research, said: “GBA manufacturers may have concerns about a potential surge in US tariffs against China-origin products after the November US election. However, some 50-60% of the respondents do not anticipate any potential negative impacts on their business.”

About the GBAI
The GBAI is the first forward-looking quarterly survey in the market that looks at the business sentiment and synergistic effects in cities and industries across the GBA. It is compiled based on a survey of more than 1,000 companies in the GBA covering the manufacturing and trading, retail and wholesale, financial services, professional services and innovation and technology sectors. The index enables investors and businesses to better understand the current business climate, gauge future performance prospects and formulate their market strategies for the GBA.

HKTDC Export Confidence Index 3Q24: Positive exporter confidence amid solid sales

– Growing orders and upbeat sentiment for ASEAN and mainland

Hong Kong traders remain optimistic about their prospects with a sustained period of moderate growth believed to be underway. This was the key finding of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) Export Confidence Index for the third quarter of 2024 as released today.

The Index – a quarterly review of the views and expectations of Hong Kong-based traders across a broad cross-section of industry sectors – showed that, despite a slight decline compared to the second quarter, underlying sentiment remains broadly positive. In another welcome outcome, the majority of the sub-indices remained in expansionary territory, a clear indication of widespread anticipation of continued growth.

Putting the overall findings into context, Irina Fan, Director of HKTDC Research, said: “Hong Kong exporters remain resilient, despite the uncertainty stemming from lingering trade tensions. Indeed, the majority of respondents reported no – or only minimal – impact from the recent round of trade restrictions and higher tariffs.”

Strong sales and new orders
Looking at the findings in greater detail, the overall Current Performance Index rose by 1 point to 52.6, a development seen as reflecting strong sales and new orders, rising unit prices and expanding procurement activities. This was underlined by concurrent rises in the relevant Sub-Indices – the Trade Value Sub-Index (56.2, +2.5) and Procurement Sub-Index (57.3, +3.3). Although the Sales & New Orders Sub-Index recorded a moderate 1.8-point drop, it stayed resolutely in expansionary territory at 55.7.

The Expectation Index also remained in expansionary territory at 51.4 even after a 2.9-point dip. This decrease was driven mainly by the 8.5-point decline in the Trade Value Expectation Sub-Index (down to 51.7), with traders expecting unit prices to increase only moderately.

The same traders, however, remained optimistic about the outlook for sales and new orders (with a Sales & New Orders Expectation Sub-Index reading of 54.6); and look set to continue to expand their procurement activities (Procurement Expectation Sub-Index: 55.4).

Overall, the findings suggest that the immediate future will be characterised by moderate, sustained export growth.

Cost pressures lessen, but remain major concern
It was also apparent that costs remained the major drag on exporter confidence in the third quarter. While both the Current and Expectation Cost Sub-Index showed some improvement, scores remained at about the 35 level, an indication that exporters are still facing strong cost pressures.

In terms of Current Performance, exporters have seen increased Sales and New Orders across all their key markets. With regard to outlook (Expectation), exporters were most upbeat about the ASEAN bloc (59.7) and mainland China (58.4).

By industry, the third quarter saw an improvement in Current Performance across all sectors. In terms of prospects for the near-term, Clothing exporters are the most optimistic at 61.2, followed by Toys (58.7) and Jewellery (56.4).

Looking to the immediate future, Nicholas Fu, Senior Economist with HKTDC Research, said: “Exporters from five out of the six key sectors expect the current positive business momentum to continue. Overall, Clothing exporters were the most upbeat, followed by those in the Toys and Jewellery sectors. While it is noteworthy that cost pressures are expected to stay high across all sectors, there is some possibility of a slight improvement further down the line.”

In addition to addressing the standard index criteria, the latest survey also focused on several specific thematic questions with regard to the primary challenges facing exporters and the favoured forward strategies of participants. Responses here showed that:

– High and rising costs (transport, labour, production and capital) were seen as the most significant challenges.
– In order to mitigate any related risks, Hong Kong exporters intend to adopt more cautionary business strategies.
– Regarding the impact of recent trade restrictions and higher tariffs on certain China-origin exports, 60% of respondents reported no impact on their business to date, while 39% expect only a moderate downside.
– On the sustainability front, however, fewer than 20% of respondents were familiar with the EU’s newly enacted Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulations (ESPR), which is expected to have a broad impact across many industry sectors.

The HKTDC Export Confidence Index was introduced in the first quarter of 2024. It is a composite of five sub-indices – Sales and New Orders, Trade Value, Cost, Procurement and Inventory – and seeks to provide a comprehensive overview of Hong Kong exporter sentiment.

There are two primary / overall indices, one of which gauges the Current Performance in the present quarter, while the other considers the Expectation for the upcoming quarter via a weighted average of the following five sub-indices:

– Sales and New Orders: This is an indication of overall export performance as well as the level of new export orders received by respondents. This index is compiled based on respondents’ feedback regarding the prospects of each of their major export markets.
– Trade Value: This focuses on tracking the movement of unit export prices.
– Cost: This tracks cost pressures as they relate to day-to-day operations, including raw material prices / labour and other operational costs/ financing requirements. Compared with the other indices, it is an inverted index, with an index reading above 50 indicating a downward trend for costs, while a reading below 50 indicates an upward trend for costs.
– Procurement: This is a measure of the input-buying activity of Hong Kong traders.
– Inventory: This tracks the overall inventory levels held by respondents for present use and the upcoming quarter. An index reading above 50 indicates a lower-than-normal inventory level, while a reading below 50 indicates a higher-than-normal inventory level.

41st Watch & Clock Design Competition winners recognised at awards ceremony

– Advanced designs highlight Hong Kong’s strength in innovation

The physical exhibitions of the 43rd HKTDC Hong Kong Watch & Clock Fair and 12th Salon de TIME, organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), Hong Kong Watch Manufacturers Association Ltd and The Federation of Hong Kong Watch Trades & Industries Ltd, successfully concluded on 7 September. The two fairs attracted some 17,000 buyers from 106 countries and regions. The results of the 41st Hong Kong Watch & Clock Design Competition, also facilitated by the three organisers, were announced. All winning and finalist entries were displayed during the Watch & Clock Fair.

The annual Hong Kong Watch & Clock Design Competition promotes the development of Hong Kong’s watch industry. In addition to encouraging local designers to create more innovative work, the competition also identifies emerging industry talent.

The competition has an Open Group and a Student Group, with Go Beyond Innovation and Talent Moment as their respective design themes. The Go Beyond Innovation theme for the Open Group focused on new concepts and technologies. The Talent Moment theme for the Student Group encouraged participants to explore new frontiers for quartz watches inspired by AI.

70 entries were submitted. The winner, first and second runner-up and merit award recipients were selected by a judging panel comprising eight industry leaders and celebrity artiste Benjamin Yuen.

Open Group creations break with tradition and inspire
This year’s Open Group winner was Vertical 6.0, designed by Wong Ting Bong. This car-racing inspired watch allows the wearer to experience the pursuit of speed and thrill of racing. A metal case placed above the surface presents an industrial aesthetic.

The first runner-up was The time for flowers, designed by Cheng Pui Ling. The watch’s dial is layered with enamel four-leaf clovers and butterflies. As the hand moves, each four-leaf clover near the hour marker unfurls one by one, as if caressed by a spring breeze.

The second runner-up was ODYSSEY, designed by Inspo Watches Company Limited. This watch includes an innovative dual-dial world time display. A unique automatic movement drives two hemispheric time zone dials, with only a simple adjustment needed to check the time in different time zones.

Student Group creations combine elegance with practicality
The Student Group, for students from local registered colleges, looked for up-and-coming watch industry talent. This year’s winner was Liminality, designed by Lau Cheuk Lai who studies at Creative Secondary School. This creation blurs the boundaries between watches and jewellery, showing transitory forms that combine AI with tradition and decoration with practicality.

The first runner-up was Celestial Feathered Symphony, designed by Lee Kwan Ho from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. This peacock-inspired watch combines ethereal and artistic elements. The pointer movement evokes the imagery of a peacock, dancing amidst a symphony of feathers.

The second runner-up was The Watcher, designed by Yu Po Kwan from the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong. This creation features an eye, inspired by surveillance cameras, while a rotating mechanism in the watch face signifies the passage of time.

Newly introduced this year was The Made-to-Sell Award, recognising a student creation that demonstrates exceptional marketability. The award went to Yip Yu Ching from the Hong Kong Design Institute for her creation Starlight. Inspired by stargazing, the watch design included a location tracking function and a constellation diagram.

This watch will be produced under the guidance and support of the Hong Kong Watch Manufacturers Association Ltd and The Federation of Hong Kong Watch Trades & Industries Ltd and will receive its official retail launch at the HKTDC Design Gallery. The winner was selected by another eight industry leaders and the Assistant Executive Director of the HKTDC.

The competition’s Award Presentation Ceremony was complemented by a Fashion x Watch Parade.
