Mitsubishi Corporation: Mobility & Regional Contents Pilot Project Launched in Smart City Aizuwakamatsu

Mitsubishi Corporation (MC), Shobunsha Holdings, Inc. and Shobunsha subsidiary MAPPLE, Inc. (MAPPLE) are pleased to announce the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between MC and MAPPLE regarding joint studies on new tourism services.

The services will combine each company’s unique expertise with advances made by HERE Technologies (HERE)(1), a leading provider of location-based information technologies. The partners recently launched a pilot project to create localized mobility demand in the Aizukawamatsu “smart city’ in Fukushima Prefecture. The project is being undertaken in collaboration with the Aizuwakamatsu Tourism Bureau, a general incorporated foundation.

Aims Under the MoU
Although the tourism industry has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, it is expected to enjoy robust growth over the medium to long term and be one of the main drivers of regional revitalization in Japan. Through these studies, MC hopes to develop real-world applications for location-information services that take advantage of HERE’s technologies, and to grow its know-how through cross-industry business developments. MAPPLE intends to leverage the studies to help stimulate Japan’s regional revitalization efforts through creative applications of map and other tourism services.(2)

In the future, the partners plan to develop a platform for regional mobility services that will enable connectivity between a wide range of services and service providers in both digital and real worlds. The efforts underway in Aizuwakamatsu City are a good first step towards creating mobility services that not only effectively marry digital contents with physical means of transport, but also showcase the unique appeal of each region and what tourists can expect to enjoy there.

The Pilot Project in Aizuwakamatsu City
The trials being carried out MC and MAPPLE have two focuses: (1) Delivery of local-tour-related content and a rental-bicycle booking service; and (2) Visualization and analysis of users’ mobility data.

Outline of Pilot Project
(1) Delivery of Local-Tour-Related Content and Rental-Bicycle Booking Service
The partners have developed digital content for visitors to Tsuruga Castle, one of the most famous tourist spots in the Tohoku (northeast) region of Japan. The content helps to provide visitors with a “smooth mobility experience” by using a routing function and other technologies from HERE to recommend tours of the region’s most popular attractions. Users can then select their preferred courses, and they can use the same platform to book rental bicycles managed by the Aizuwakamatsu Tourism Bureau.

The rented bicycles can help visitors to navigate the castle town’s complex network of streets, ease traffic congestion and reduce the region’s carbon footprint. In the future, MC and MAPPLE also plan to connect this bicycle service with other means of transportation to further optimize the region’s mobility environment.

(2) Visualization and Analysis of Users’ Mobility Data
The partners plan to link data on user attributes, preferences and mobility (obtained via GPS technology mounted on the rental bicycles) and then use HERE’s location platform to visualize and analyze those data. The results will be used to create new localized mobility demand, offer users personalized travel itineraries, and otherwise help tourists to enjoy a stress-free mobility experience.

Fujitsu Launches Latest Version of its VPS Digital Production Preparation Tool

Promoting DX by linking design and manufacturing, contributing to improved economic productivity and diverse working styles

News Facts:
– Fujitsu Manufacturing Industry Solution COLMINA Digital Production Preparation VPS enhanced with new 3D BOP (Bill of Process) creation function, visualizing production processes to support users, reduce errors in manufacturing, and centralizing data of common tasks to minimize the need to redo tasks.
– Supporting adoption of new working styles in the “new normal” era by bringing about the convergence of real world manufacturing and digital world while contributing to improved productivity, quality, and faster delivery of new products to market.

Fujitsu today announced the launch of a new version of the Fujitsu Manufacturing Industry Solution COLMINA Digital Production Preparation VPS (1), a series of tools developed by Digital Process Ltd. to support the digital transformation (DX) of production preparation tasks in manufacturing. Sales will commence for the Japanese market today, June 30, with availability in international regions at a later date.

The latest version offers enhanced functions, including a feature that allows users to create a 3D bill of process (3D-BOP) (2) that links 3D data to production process information for production preparation activities such as manufacturing prototyping and process planning. Specifically, the new version includes an improved function for visualizing machine layout and work procedures in a process block diagram (3) in an easy-to-understand manner illustrated with graphics and image inserts, as well as an enhanced function to centralize work data for parts with common specifications in manufacturing lines that handle products with multiple specifications. This makes it possible to quickly create a highly accurate 3D-BOP that can reduce manufacturing errors and the need to redo common tasks. With this tool, Fujitsu can bring the real world of manufacturing closer to the digital world, helping to deliver products to market faster and improve overall productivity and quality.

Fujitsu’s VPS offering will accelerate DX in the manufacturing space by linking digital data from design to manufacturing sites and supports working styles at manufacturing sites for the “new normal,” streamlining work processes and promoting the ability to manage operations remotely. Fujitsu will also contribute to the achievement of the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) by improving productivity and quality and creating innovations from a variety of perspectives.

Background
The SDGs Action Plan 2021 (4) announced by the Japanese government in December 2020, identifies the promotion of digital transformation, and establishment of a system where everyone can benefit from digitization, and work to establish and accelerate the ‘new normal’ as a priority issue. At manufacturing sites, DX is expected to link the entire process from design to manufacturing with digital data, and to improve efficiency and productivity by centralizing data, contributing to the fulfillment of this objective.

In the manufacturing industry, COVID-19 is causing demand for new ways of working at manufacturing sites. Simultaneously, it is becoming increasingly difficult for manufacturers to direct assembly operations, which have been conducted at overseas plants. These factors have led to a growing demand for 3D-BOP solutions that can effectively visualize manufacturing sites.

To address this need, Fujitsu has launched a new version of its VPS with enhanced functions for creating a visually appealing 3D-BOPs and streamlining operations on manufacturing lines.

Features of the New Version
1. VPS Standard and VPS Manufacturing, 3D-BOP creation tools that more faithfully represent the manufacturing site

VPS Standard and VPS Manufacturing are 3D-BOP creation tools for reviewing the manufacturing process with 3D data. With previous versions of this solution, process procedure were represented by process names and parts images that can be assembled in processes, but they were insufficient for intuitive understanding of process layout, work procedures, and way of assembling.

The new version enables the creation of a more visual 3D-BOP solution that is suitable for the manufacturing site by means of graphics and insert images to indicate the arrangement of machines, worker flow lines, and work procedures on the process block diagram, displaying tools on snapshots and process shots (5), and easily creating shapes such as weld shapes, auxiliary materials, and jigs and tools. This reduces operational errors such as misuse of jigs and assembly work order, resulting in higher yield production.

2. VPS GP4, a manufacturing line process planning tool that improves work efficiency by centralizing data
With the previous versions of the VPS GP4 solution, which is used for examining the process plan of a manufacturing line with 3D data, it was necessary to create and edit design data on an individual basis, including for shared tasks. With this enhancement, it will be possible to mix common work and work with different specifications and express them in one data. As a result, when there is a change in a common operation, only one set of data needs to be corrected. This can reduce the operation time by up to about 70% (6). Moreover, since multiple operational procedures are represented by one set of data, it is easier to compare and examine each procedure. Thus, it is possible to apply reasonable improvement measures while looking at evaluation values of production lines.

Future Plans
Going forward, Fujitsu will continue to support Digital Transformation (DX) in the manufacturing industry, leveraging its capabilities as a leading technology company with extensive know-how in manufacturing and advanced technologies in fulfillment of its mission for its manufacturing brand, COLMINA: “Bringing innovation to manufacturing through the delivery of services that are global, open, and rapid that help to realize DX”

Princeton Digital Group announces 100 MW Flagship Data Center Campus in Japan, committing $1 Billion in investment

Singapore-based Princeton Digital Group (PDG), Asia’s leading data center provider, today announced its plan to build one of the largest hyperscale facilities in Tokyo, Japan, with a total investment value of USD 1 Billion. Japan is the fifth market that the company has entered in since its formation 4 years ago. With this investment, PDG marks a major milestone in its plan to build a 600 megawatts (MW) portfolio across the region.

The new campus at Saitama City will have close to 100 MW of critical IT capacity across two phases of 48.5 MW each. Saitama City is one of the major commercial centers of the Greater Tokyo area. Located 30 km north of central Tokyo, the PDG Saitama campus has a total land area of 33,047 m2. The facility is designed to serve leading hyperscalers in Japan, one of the most dynamic cloud markets in the world.

PDG has already secured the land and power with construction to begin later this year. The facility will be built to the latest hyperscale design and standards, with unrivalled scalability, connectivity and reliability.

“The Asia Pacific region is set to be the largest data center market in the world, and this announcement underscores our vision to be the market leader in this region,” said Rangu Salgame, Chairman and CEO of Princeton Digital Group. “Over the last four years, through our unique three-pronged strategy of acquisitions, carve-outs and greenfield development, we’ve built a strong portfolio of data centers across key Asian markets such as China, Singapore, Indonesia and India. PDG has become a partner of choice for hyperscalers across multiple countries. Our entry into Japan and, in particular, Tokyo demonstrates our continued ability to enter new markets that matter to our customers.”

Tokyo is the largest data center market in Asia outside of China and is still in the early stages of growth, particularly in terms of entry and expansion of global hyperscalers. According to Structure Research, Greater Tokyo’s hyperscale colocation market is expected to reach USD1.6 billion by 2025, growing at a CAGR of 25.1% between 2021 and 2025.

“The Greater Tokyo market is projected to see accelerated demand from hyperscale data center deployments moving forward from what we believe is a convergence of several critical factors that include Japan’s sizeable addressable market as the 3rd largest country in the world by GDP, the absence of a domestic hyperscale cloud platform that presents an ideal competitive landscape between both US and Chinese hyperscale cloud providers, as well as being a key connectivity aggregation and distribution hub for submarine cables landing from the US West Coast to access the rest of the Asia Pacific region”, said Jabez Tan, Head of Research, Structure Research.

Rakuten Mobile, NEC and Intel demonstrate industry-leading performance in containerized 5G Core lab trial

Rakuten Mobile, Inc., NEC Corporation and Intel Corporation announced today that they have achieved a performance of 640 Gbps per server for the containerized User Plane Function (UPF) on the containerized 5G SA core network jointly developed by Rakuten Mobile and NEC running on the Rakuten Communications Platform (RCP).

Containerized UPF performance is crucial to maximize the value of 5G deployment. This is because the control plane (C-plane) and user plane (U-plane), which were historically collocated, are completely decoupled in the disaggregated 5G architecture. This enables an independently scalable UPF which is key to private networks, edge computing, hybrid cloud and to accelerate a variety of deployment scenarios. Rakuten Mobile has adopted 5G architecture from the launch of its network, including a CUPS (Control and User Plane Separated) packet core for its 4G LTE network.

The 640 Gbps performance per server for the containerized UPF on the 5G SA core network was achieved in a laboratory environment in Tokyo. This represents a significant opportunity to drive high performance of the commercial network in the future.

NEC leveraged its industry-leading product development based on its advanced telecom and IT expertise to maximize CPU utilization and fast memory access. This is fueled by the utilization of Intel’s latest high-performance infrastructure, including 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors with built-in AI acceleration and Dual-port 100Gb Intel Ethernet Network Adapter E810-2CQDA2 with Dynamic Device Personalization (DDP). Rakuten Mobile, Intel and NEC have collaborated on high-speed processing of containerized UPF, which plays a significant role in this initiative, and achieved a performance of 640 Gbps per server. High-speed processing in a containerized environment on Rakuten Mobile’s RCP enables instant and flexible deployment of UPF from edge to central locations based on traffic characteristics, leveraging RCP’s full automation features.

“Rakuten Mobile has successfully designed and built a fully containerized mobile network based on open standards,” commented Tareq Amin, Representative Director, Executive Vice President and CTO of Rakuten Mobile. “With NEC and Intel, we have demonstrated that extremely high-speed processing is possible on containers. We aim to continue to pursue performance improvements in the core to achieve higher throughput and reduce cost and energy consumption in the rollout of network technology in Japan and worldwide.”

“We’re proud that Rakuten Mobile, Intel and NEC were able to demonstrate industry-leading UPF performance,” commented NEC Executive Vice President Atsuo Kawamura. “NEC has been developing high-performance and highly reliable 5G systems by leveraging our vast experience that includes more than 25 years in mobile core networking. Our strong track record, technical capabilities and expertise in both network and computing domains, allowed us to bring high-quality 5G core to virtualization and cloud-native technology. NEC and Intel have a long-term relationship in the hardware business, including CPUs and NICs (Network Interface Cards), and have jointly enhanced the acceleration technology for virtualization, represented by the DPDK (Data Plane Development Kit). NEC performed significant optimization and improvements to pursue higher performance for the cloud-native UPF. In the future, we will continue to contribute to society through 5G in Japan and around the world leveraging the results of this project.”

“The fully virtualized Rakuten mobile network featuring NEC’s containerized 5G UPF software built on the latest Intel technology is another key proof point of how ecosystem collaboration and industry leading technology are both essential to fulfill the promise of 5G,” said Dan Rodriguez, corporate vice president and general manager of Intel’s Network Platforms Group. “The ongoing development and optimization work among the companies on the latest 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors and Intel Ethernet 800 Series network adapters not only provides outstanding performance, but the added flexibility to run workloads from core to edge that are designed to offer the best experience for end users.”
