Seeing Indonesia’s sports tourism development through Lake Toba F1 Powerboat Championship

  • One of the most spacious lakes in the world offers a great destination for athletes to compete and tourists to enjoy the scenic vistas

In developing its sports tourism potential, Indonesia holds many championships or sports events, and one of the closest is the F1 Powerboat (F1H2O) World Championship in Lake Toba, North Sumatra, on February 24-26. Lake Toba, one of the most spacious lakes in the world, offers a great destination for athletes to compete, and tourists to enjoy the scenic view.

Assistant Deputy for Sustainable Tourism Development at the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Kosmas Harefa, stated that the preparation for the F1H2O World Championship in Lake Toba reached 70 percent as of January 24. “It is expected that the preparations are in accordance with the target and all the main gates will have been completed by February 10,” Harefa said in a virtual gathering.

The F1 Powerboat is the world’s largest motorboat racing competition for powerboats, on par with Formula 1 or MotoGP. Harefa revealed that one of the facilities’ constructions, which is a centralized parking location, can accommodate three thousand to four thousand cars. “Currently, the Toba District Government, supported by the North Sumatra Provincial Public Works Office, has prepared a vast parking lot,” he added. According to him, the number of visitors is targeted to reach 20 thousand to 25 thousand, by promoting the event intensively.

Meanwhile, Minister of Youth and Sports Zainudin Amali said Lake Toba as the host of F1H20 is very ready to organize this activity, as proven by the venue readiness and other supporting facilities. “The government has prepared many F1 Powerboat post events, to support the economy of the Toba people,” Amali, who serves as the Chairperson of the F1H2O National Committee, said.

He also ensured that the F1 Powerboat at Lake Toba will pamper the visitors, as he claimed the location is cooler than Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (UAE), where the previous F1 Powerboat event was held on December 16, 2022. “In Sharjah, the venue was an artificial lake and the weather was very hot. This is very different from Lake Toba where the air is cool and not artificial,” he explained. He emphasized, the government has been preparing this event very seriously and hoping for support from various parties to make F1 Powerboat 2023 a success.

Moreover, he expressed hope that the F1 Powerboat implementation can result in the emergence of new water sports racing athletes in Indonesia. “We hope that this international event at Lake Toba can find new athletes and hopefully, they can excel,” Amali said. He added, the event can promote local micro, small, and medium enterprises and show the world’s trust in Indonesia in holding international events.

Unique to the world
State-owned tourism holding firm InJourney said that the F1H20 circuit in Lake Toba is the most unique in the world. “This circuit is quite unique because the track is on the lake. We have carried out the homologation (verification of the track’s safety), and the circuit length is 2.2 km. Its shape is unique because Lake Toba is a volcanic lake,” InJourney’s Marketing and Consumer Experience Director Maya Watono said on Wednesday.

Furthermore, InJourney President Director Dony Oskaria said that the F1H20 will involve the local communities. Oskaria explained, the shores of Lake Toba can serve as places for the spectators and local people are allowed to collect fees as long as they are registered as InJourney official partners. InJourney also involved 500 students as event organizers and will give them certificates.

Minister Amali said the F1H20 event can encourage Lake Toba as one of Indonesia’s super-priority tourism destinations, just as Lake Toba has gained the trust of the F1 Committee to host F1H2O for the next five years or until 2027.

Sir Ralf Speth, Chairman of TVS Motor Company, has been conferred with an Honorary Doctorate in the field of Science (Doctor of Science, honoris causa) from the University of Warwick, United Kingdom. The honorary degree was conferred by the University of Warwick Chancellor Baroness Catherine Ashton of Upholland.

Sir Ralf is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, and a Fellow of the Royal Society. An honorary professor at Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG), he has been closely associated with WMG ever since obtaining his engineering doctorate in 2008, under the pioneering leadership of former WMG Chairman, Lord Bhattacharyya. An outstanding engineer with a vast experience in the global automotive industry, Sir Ralf has held leadership roles with some of the renowned automotive and industrial giants such as Jaguar Land Rover, BMW, Ford, Tata Motors, and The Linde Group. He was appointed Honorary Knight Commander of the British Empire and an Additional Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.

The models, the TAILG EBIXON BOLD and TAILG EBIXON TORQ, in the personal and commercial use categories, respectively, are assembled at the Group’s manufacturing facilities in Seri Kembangan, Selangor.

Khoo explained, “The first motorcycle we experimented with was an internal combustion engine (ICE) motorcycle which was not efficient as it was burdensome and costly, and we wanted a vehicle that is environmentally friendly. After a series of trials and experiences, an electrical motorcycle that was clean and has zero tailpipe emission was successfully developed, as our BLACKBIXON Coffee Bike last year.”

“We soon realised that there is a market for this purpose-built machine. The COVID-19 pandemic brought about a spike in e-commerce and hence the demand for delivery services. Motorcycles are a popular choice for its quicker delivery time and low maintenance. In light of global warming, EV motorcycles make perfect sense as they are energy efficient and cheaper to maintain.”

“There are lots of opportunities for the use of EVs, with the government providing incentives in the form of tax reliefs for the assembly or manufacturing of EVs, component parts, and the development of EV ecosystems such as charging facilities. The government as well as government-linked companies (GLCs) are also expected to adopt the use of EVs. Also, the global electric scooter and motorcycle market is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 10.2% to US$93.9 billion by 2031 from US$35.3 billion in 2021.”

The Group’s venture into the manufacture and assembly of EV motorcycles underscores its commitment to social and environmental responsibilities while creating a green revenue stream in carbon trading, in which emissions are treated as either carbon credits or offsets that can be sold in a carbon market such as Bursa Securities Malaysia Berhad’s voluntary carbon market (Bursa VCM), to be opened by the end of 2022.

Ni Hsin Obtains VTA Approval for Electric Vehicle Bikes

  • Venture into e-mobility in line with Ni Hsin’s drive towards ESG

Ni Hsin EV Tech Sdn Bhd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Main Market-listed Ni Hsin Group Berhad (formerly known as Ni Hsin Resources Berhad (Bursa: NIHSIN, 7215), today received the Vehicle Type Approvals (VTA) from Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan Malaysia under the Malaysia Road Transport Act 1987 for two models of its EBIXON Electric Vehicle Bikes (EBIXON EV Bikes) in the personal and commercial categories namely, the TAILG BOLD and TAILG TORQ respectively.

NH EV TECH had on 23 March 2022 entered into an Original Equipment Manufacturing Agreement (OEM Agreement) with Dongguan Tailing Motor Vehicle Co., Ltd. (TAILG) for the manufacture of EV Bikes or EV Motorcycles as commonly known in Malaysia.

Under the OEM Agreement, TAILG will manufacture the EV Bikes and deliver components, spare parts and software while NH EV TECH will assemble and test as well as run quality control and commission the EV Bikes in Malaysia.

TAILG, established in China in 2004, specializes in R&D, manufacturing, sales and service of new energy electric vehicles. Its products cover electric bike, electric scooter, electric special bike, electric tricycle and other vehicles. TAILG, which ranks top 3 in China, is recognised as a “Partner of UN Environment E-mobility Programme” and has 7,000 exclusive shops all around the world. TAILG also set the Guinness World Records for the greatest distance by electric scooter, single charge in October of 2020.

The International Trade and Industry Ministry (MITI) had, on 17 March 2022, issued the Manufacturing Licence to NH EV TECH to act as Licenced Manufacturer to carry out ‘Manufacture and Assembly of Electric Vehicle Bike’ activity at 47, Jalan Taming Dua, Taman Taming Jaya, 43300 Seri Kembangan, Selangor Darul Ehsan as from 29 October 2021 in pursuance of the Industrial Co-ordination Act 1975 (ACT 156).

Asia’s First Hybrid Online to Offline Festival to Bring Sim Racers and Entertainers Rriley and Haneri to Scape

The Legion of Racers, with support from the Singapore Tourism Board, will be organising the HyperDrive Cities (HDC) 2022 Festival from 23 to 25 September. To be held at Orchard Road, this will be Asia’s first hybrid online to offline festival that combines live sim racing, entertainment, lifestyle and technology within an urban carnival setting.

The HDC will take place during this year’s Grand Prix Season Singapore (GPSS) from 23 September to 2 October. GPSS is a collection of innovative race-themed lifestyle experiences that complements the Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix 2022 excitement beyond the track.

For three days, the HDC will be held at *SCAPE in Orchard Road and will include feature a regional sim racing championship that follows the inaugural E-Cities Championship held in November 2021, along with an electric go-karting experience and a community sim racing challenge with prizes for the fastest sim racers from the public.

To cap off the event, an entertainment element will be added to the post-sim race event with Singaporean artistes RRILEY and Haneri, who will both perform a set of three songs each. In addition, DJ NashD, who is the official DJ for local artistes Shigga Shay and hip hop collective Grizzle Grind Crew, will raise the decibels on 23 September from 8pm to 10pm.

“This is a unique event comprising multiple elements for the community,” said Lim Keong Wee, co-founder of the Legion of Racers.

“We wanted to create a motorsport festival for everyone, ranging from electric karting for young families to youths and millennials who could watch an entertainment segment at the end of the day that features some of Singapore’s hottest music talents.”

Added RRILEY, who made her debut in 2012 as a founding member of the Sam Willows, “It is just so nice to be performing again and I am so excited to bring my music to a new audience.”

The event is supported by the Singapore Tourism Board, which oversees the Orchard Road precinct.

Among the partners confirmed for the festival include McLaren, TYCA, Next Level Racing, Logitech G, Monster Energy, and Tarmac Works. A McLaren 720S sportscar will also be on display at the venue during the course of the programme.

The simulated track which the sim racers will be racing on is the Orchard Road Street Circuit, which was produced by the Legion of Racers team. For 2022, the track has been extended to include the Somerset and Dhoby Ghaut sub-precincts.

The HDC 2022 Festival is set to bring more than 5,000 members of the public to *SCAPE while thousands more will follow the HyperDrive Cities Championships live on Youtube.

Motul powers Mercedes-AMG Team Craft-Bamboo Racing to iconic P2 finish at Bathurst 12 Hour

Official AMG Performance Team, Mercedes-AMG Team Craft-Bamboo Racing took part in the world-famous Bathurst 12 Hour held from the 13th to the 15th of May 2022 with Motul as the factory-supported team’s exclusive lubricant partner. The #91 Mercedes-AMG GT3 finished in a brilliant second place, only 8 seconds adrift in the round-the-clock endurance classic, despite starting from the back of the grid. Changing weather conditions was the story of the day, as the Motul-powered car performed exceptionally well and held reliability for the entire 12 hours on Mount Panorama Circuit.

The Mercedes-AMG GT3 car used the iconic Motul 300V 5W40 Power lubricant for the V8 engine. The race was particularly challenging with the engine having to be pushed to the maximum for 12 hours on an undulating circuit forcing the race car to literally climb up a mountain over 250 times. It is imperative to have a high-performance engine lubricant when battling cars from different manufacturers and constantly driving at high RPM. Along with that, the GT3 cars go through about 40 gear changes per lap over the 6.2km circuit, accounting for almost 10,000 gear changes over the duration of the race. The Motul Gear Competition oil played a particularly important role in ensuring that the gearbox remains reliable and the car remains competitive as the team bid its efforts for the win. The team also used products from Motul’s Care range, such as the Brake Clean and Wheel Clean to keep the Motul-liveried car looking good every time it went out on track.

Ni Hsin Signs OEM Manufacturing Agreement with TAILG for Electric Two Wheelers

Venture into the e-mobility in line with Ni Hsin’s drive towards ESG

Ni Hsin EV Tech Sdn Bhd (NH EV TECH), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Main Market-listed Ni Hsin Group Berhad (formerly known as Ni Hsin Resources Berhad) (Ni Hsin or the Group), today entered into an Original Equipment Manufacturing Agreement (OEM Agreement) with Dongguan Tailing Motor Vehicle Co., Ltd. (TAILG) for the manufacture of the eBixon EV Bike.

Under the OEM Agreement, TAILG will manufacture the eBixon EV Bikes and deliver as semi-knocked down (“SKD”) components that includes spare parts and software while NH EV TECH will assemble and test as well as run quality control and commission the electric two wheelers in Malaysia.

NH EV TECH and TAILG had, on 14 October 2021, entered into a product development agreement to develop the electric two wheelers based on TAILG’s existing Model D-80 for commercial purposes. Following the successful development of the prototype, the parties are now proceeding with the commercial manufacture of the two wheelers, which is certified by the Economic Commission for Europe (ECE), Malaysian Standard 2413 (MS2413) and Vehicle Type Approval (VTA) from Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan Malaysia.

Our target is to produce 1,000 units of eBixon EV Bikes for the first year.”
