Malaysia’s Job Market Shows 14% Year-on-Year Growth in August 2024

foundit (formerly Monster APAC & ME), a Asia’s leading jobs & talent platform, today published the foundit Insights Tracker (fit) for August 2024. According to the Malaysia fit report, the overall hiring activity has shown a strong 14% year-on-year increase in e-recruitment, demonstrating the job market’s resilience and ongoing recovery. 

The tracker shows the index rising from 79 in August 2023 to 90 in August 2024, indicating a positive trend in the Malaysian job market. However, there was a slight month-over-month decrease from 95 in July 2024 to 90 in August 2024, reflecting some seasonal fluctuations. 

Commenting on Malaysia’s job trends for August 2024, Sekhar Garisa, CEO, foundit, said, “Malaysia’s job market is demonstrating remarkable resilience and adaptability. The 14% year-on-year growth in August is a testament to the country’s economic recovery and the evolving needs of various sectors. While we’ve observed some seasonal adjustments, the overall trend remains positive, suggesting that Malaysia’s job market is well-positioned for continued growth in the coming months. The diverse growth across sectors, particularly the impressive 83% annual growth in Retail and 55% in Engineering, Construction, and Real Estate, highlights the dynamic nature of Malaysia’s economy. This shift underscores the importance of upskilling and adaptability in today’s rapidly changing job landscape.” 

Retail and Engineering sectors lead growth, while BFSI faces challenges 

The Retail sector has demonstrated remarkable growth, with an 83% year-on-year increase in hiring activity, despite facing a 17% month-on-month decline in August 2024. This recent slowdown marks the sector’s most modest expansion since April 2024, with a notable deceleration in sales growth across various categories including general retail outlets, specialiszed household equipment stores, and niche goods retailers. 

The Engineering, Construction, and Real Estate industry showed impressive growth with a 55% YoY increase and double-digit growth over the last month. This surge is primarily driven by increased activity in both residential and commercial projects, reflecting a robust real estate market and ongoing infrastructure development in Malaysia. 

Other sectors showing substantial annual growth include Hospitality (51%), Logistics, Courier/Freight/Transportation, Shipping/Marine (49%), Oil and Gas (38%), and Advertising, Market Research, Public Relations, Media, and Entertainment (37%). These trends reflect a broad-based economic recovery across multiple sectors in Malaysia. 

However, the Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance (BFSI) sector recorded a 9% YoY decrease in hiring activity, with a notable decline over the last month. This trend could be attributed to ongoing digital transformation efforts in the financial sector, leading to a shift in skill requirements. 

Engineering/Production roles lead functional growth, while traditional Hospitality & Travel roles face decline 

Engineering/Production roles witnessed the highest demand with a 91% YoY growth and a 26% increase over the last month. This surge is particularly driven by heightened activity in the Retail sector over the past year and supported by growth in the Automotive and Engineering, Construction, and Real Estate sectors. 

Marketing & Communications professionals also saw a significant increase in demand, with a 53% YoY growth. This trend reflects the increasing importance of digital marketing and communications strategies across various industries. 

Software, Hardware & Telecom roles experienced a 49% YoY increase, with a notable 45% rise in job roles over the past month. This growth underscores the ongoing digital transformation across sectors and the increasing demand for tech talent. 

However, traditional Hospitality & Travel roles continued to face challenges, experiencing a steep 63% YoY decline. This was the only function to register a drop in demand, indicating significant shifts in the hospitality industry, possibly due to the adoption of new technologies and changing consumer behaviours. 

Other functional areas showing positive YoY growth include Customer Service (46%), Sales & Business Development (37%), HR & Admin (31%), Finance & Accounts (19%), and Purchase/Logistics/Supply Chain (14%).

According to the Singapore fit report, the Legal sector has demonstrated remarkable resilience and growth, with a 24% year-on-year increase in hiring activity and a 2% month-on-month rise in June 2024.

The tracker reveals an overall year-on-year (YoY) decline of 9% in hiring activity across sectors, as the index dropped from 122 in June 2023 to 111 in June 2024. However, a month-on-month (MoM) analysis indicates a notable 2% surge, with an index of 109 recorded in May 2024. This uptick suggests that businesses are resuming hiring activities post-economic adjustments, with the legal sector leading the way.

Commenting on Singapore’s job trends for June 2024, Sekhar Garisa, CEO, foundit, said, “The impressive growth in demand for legal professionals, both annually and month-on-month, highlights the importance of legal expertise in today’s complex business environment. While the overall job market continues to navigate through economic adjustments, the Legal sector’s performance is a bright spot, indicating areas of opportunity and growth. IT, Telecom, and Hospitality sectors lead MoM Industry growth indicating positive economic trends

The IT, Telecom/ISP, and BPO/ITES industry, along with the Hospitality sector, showed positive trends with a 3% MoM growth each in June 2024. This growth is primarily driven by businesses increasingly integrating AI and Machine Learning into their operations to enhance automation, efficiency, and insights, as well as a gradual recovery in the tourism and hospitality sectors.

The BFSI sector also experienced a 2% increase in hiring demand over the last month, with heightened interest in roles such as Compliance Officers, Risk Managers, and Legal Experts. Other sectors showing positive growth include Advertising, Market Research, Public Relations, Media, and Entertainment (2%), Retail/Trade and Logistics (2%), and Healthcare (2%).

Challenges persist in several sectors with declining or stagnant hiring trends

While some sectors showed growth, others faced challenges in the job market. The Import/Export industry recorded a substantial deceleration in hiring activity, with a 3% MoM decrease, likely due to ongoing global trade uncertainties and supply chain disruptions.

The Shipping/Marine and Consumer Goods/FMCG sectors also experienced a slight decline of 1% each, reflecting cautious consumer spending and continued logistics challenges.

Several sectors showed no change in their hiring activities. The Government/PSU/Defence, Education, and Oil and Gas sectors showed no change (0% MoM growth) in their hiring patterns, indicating a cautious approach in these industries.

The Production/Manufacturing, Automotive, and Ancillary sector saw only a marginal rise (+1%), suggesting a slow recovery in these traditional industries.

Varied trends across functional roles reflect changing market dynamics

Legal professionals continued to witness significant demand in June 2024, with the highest YoY growth of 24% and a 2% MoM increase. This trend underscores the growing importance of legal expertise across various industries. This surge in demand for legal professionals could be attributed to the increasing need for regulatory compliance, risk management, and legal expertise across industries in a rapidly evolving business landscape.

Sales & Business Development and Hospitality & Travel roles also showed positive growth, each recording a 1% MoM increase. This growth reflects the gradual recovery of the tourism and hospitality sectors, as well as businesses focusing on expanding their market presence.

However, HR & Admin roles saw a marginal dip of 1% on a month-on-month basis while registering a 12% drop annually. This trend could be attributed to the increasing adoption of AI tools in recruitment and other HR functions.

Most other monitored functions, including Finance & Accounts, Software, Hardware, Telecom, Marketing & Communications, Engineering/Production, Customer Service, Purchase/Logistics/Supply Chain, and Healthcare roles, remained stable with no change in hiring activity in June 2024.

CGFNS International Joins WHO Stakeholder Network to Advance Rehabilitation Care

CGFNS International, a worldwide leader in international credentials evaluation and certification to support health worker careers, has been inducted into the World Rehabilitation Alliance (WRA).

The WRA is the World Health Organization’s global network of stakeholders whose mission is to advocate for the implementation of WHO’s Rehabilitation 2030 initiative, which aims to improve rehabilitation management and investment, build a high-quality rehabilitation workforce and services, and enhance data collection on rehabilitation.

“We are delighted to receive this recognition of our extensive work in developing practical solutions to improve rehabilitation care for the more than 2.4 billion people around the world who need it,” said Dr. Peter Preziosi, President and CEO of CGFNS. “We are also determined to further dedicate ourselves to advancing the WRA’s impact in promoting and strengthening health systems worldwide through better and more accessible rehabilitation services.”

Preziosi noted that one of the key calls to action of the WRA is for “developing a strong multidisciplinary rehabilitation workforce that is suitable for country context and promoting rehabilitation concepts across all health workforce education.”

“We believe we have a great deal of knowledge and experience to contribute to advancing critical workforce initiatives in the global rehab community, especially toward achieving the WHO goal of integrating rehab care more firmly into primary healthcare across local settings,” said Dr. Julia To Dutka, Chief of the CGFNS Global Health Workforce Development Institute. “Providing global certifications to recognize knowledge and skills of health workers will help facilitate this integration.”

To that end, for the past five years, CGFNS has been leading a collaboration of key stakeholders to develop exam-based global certifications for nurses and other health workers in rehabilitation settings worldwide. That effort has produced the first-ever global credential for registered nurses working in rehabilitation, habilitation or restorative care – the Certified Global Nurse – Rehabilitation (CGN-R), which was launched last month.

The organization is also developing credentials for other rehabilitation health workers, including physical and occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, and rehab technicians, using an interprofessional and interdisciplinary approach. These global credentials, Certified Global Health Worker – Rehabilitation (CGHW-R) and Certified Global Health Worker – Rehabilitation Advanced (CGHW-RA), will be available in 2025.

As a newly appointed member of the WRA, CGFNS will participate in four of its workstreams: Workforce, Primary Care, Research, and Emergencies.
