Gradiant 2022: A Watershed Year in Review

Prakash Govindan, COO and Co-Founder of Gradiant, a global solutions provider for advanced water and wastewater treatment, reflects upon the key highlights of the company in 2022.

“Despite the challenges faced in the global markets with COVID-19, inflation, and supply chain risks, 2022 was a breakout year for Gradiant,” Prakash remarks. “The consistent success is credited to the company’s proprietary technologies and integrated solutions that address a broad range of end-use applications for the world’s essential industries. Gradiant is serving a growing list of the top brands and manufacturers in the world with its mission-critical solutions for advanced manufacturing. We remain true to our roots as a technology company by continuing to rapidly translate R&D innovations into commercial solutions.”

Gradiant’s 2022 revenues have more than doubled from the prior year and is expected to double again in 2023 given the backlog of over $150 million USD in systems, service, and design-build-operate projects.

“We announced strategic acquisitions of WaterPark and Synauta this year. WaterPark is a Taiwan-based design and construction firm focused on water technologies for advanced manufacturing. The acquisition strengthens Gradiant’s portfolio of technologies and applications expertise in biological wastewater and unlocks Gradiant’s full range of solutions and global resources to WaterPark’s advanced industrial clients in semiconductor and microelectronics manufacturing.”

The May 2022 acquisition of Synauta, an artificial intelligence water technology company, accelerates Gradiant’s deployment of digital twin technology in water. Industrial clients are increasingly adopting machine learning AI for their water operations to address challenges of sustainability and cost pressures, business continuity, and regulatory compliance. Digital water is the area of greatest innovation potential in the global water industry, and Synauta bolsters Gradiant’s position as a technology leader in this space.

In September, Gradiant announced the appointment of Govind Alagappan as President. “Govind joins us from leadership roles at Evoqua and SUEZ Water technologies and brings us deep knowledge in sales & operational excellence in a global business. He has the perfect mix of skills and experience to lead Gradiant to the next level of transformative business growth.”

Gradiant announced a strategic partnership with SLB to deliver the sustainable production of battery-grade lithium compounds. “Our technologies will enable high levels of lithium concentration in a fraction of the time required by incumbent and competing methods, while also reducing carbon and water footprints and capital costs.”

The industry recognized Gradiant’s impact with a series of awards in 2022, including Global Water Intelligence’s”Water Technology Company of the Year” distinction and “Breakthrough Technology Company of the Year” for Synauta, as well as the International Desalination Association award for “Most Innovative Company“, and “A Great Place to Work” honors for Gradiant.

“Gradiant looks to 2023 for growth into new applications and geographies, and deep penetration into strategic markets. The company will expand capabilities and access-to-markets through strategic partnerships and acquisitions. Gradiant will continue to deploy its full technology stack to bring together industry-leading water treatment solutions with the power of AI to sustainably solve the world’s most important water challenges.”

Gradiant, Global Water Solutions Provider, Awarded $20M in New Contracts in India

Gradiant, a global solutions provider for advanced water and wastewater treatment, is pleased to announce awards of $20 million in new contracts in September and October 2022. The awards are for clients in the manufacturing of photovoltaic cells (or solar cells) renewable energy and industrial protective equipment. All three projects will be delivered as design-build contracts.

One of the largest solar companies in India has partnered with Gradiant at a manufacturing site in the Western Region for ammonia and fluoride removal and wastewater treatment. The new facility will recover, neutralize, and treat complex wastewater rinse streams from photovoltaic cell production to levels that meet the client’s sustainability goals and local discharge limits.

Gradiant has also partnered with a leader in the renewable energy business for the design-build of two facilities for ultrapure water and wastewater treatment to support a new photovoltaic cell manufacturing site also in Western Region. The project will include Gradiant’s patented RO InfinityTM membrane technology to treat industrial wastewater streams. The zero liquid discharge (ZLD) facility will reduce wastewater to only salt and solid wastes.

“We are experiencing strong growth in the India market across multiple strategic verticals,” said Prakash Govindan, COO of Gradiant. “India was already one of the fastest growing economies in the world and is well positioned to gain as global companies review their sourcing and manufacturing footprints to de-risk and diversify their supply chains. We are also witnessing a clean energy transition in India, as the country builds out renewable energy infrastructure and its supply to the world. This local market has always been important to India, and Gradiant is ready to support our clients with advanced water solutions as they shift or double-down their local manufacturing operations.”

In addition to these renewable energy projects, Gradiant is working with a leading manufacturer of industrial protective equipment for their new facility in Southern India. Gradiant will deliver an effluent treatment and ZLD waste minimization system. The plant will feature Gradiant’s Carrier Gas ExtractionTM (CGE) for ZLD and SmartOpsTM for AI-powered asset performance optimization, and a membrane biological reactor (MBR) for advanced wastewater treatment.

Gradiant entered the India market in 2018 to engage with major international and domestic companies to solve their advanced water and wastewater challenges in water recycling, minimum and zero liquid discharge, and ultrapure water. Clients are served by in-country expertise from Gradiant’s main office in Chennai while collaborating and leveraging global process and engineering resources. The India team is comprised of 80 expert engineers and staff today, with plans to increase headcounts across the country.

Gradiant Secures Five New DBOOM Projects in Indonesia and Vietnam, Appoints Managing Directors to Fuel Growth

Gradiant, a leading global cleantech water treatment solutions provider and projects developer, has announced the award of five design-build-own-operate-maintain (DBOOM) water treatment projects in Indonesia and Vietnam. Gradiant will provide end-to-end water treatment solutions through a customized approach using its proprietary suite of technologies to treat water and wastewater for industrial and municipal clients. These projects have a production capacity of 40,000 cubic meters per day. Gradiant has further announced the hiring of Managing Directors Thai Nam Nguyen for Vietnam, and K Sadanand for Indonesia. The new leadership appointments affirm Gradiant’s growth and investment priorities in the rapidly industrializing Asia Pacific region.

Sadanand brings over 35 years’ experience in the water industry, of which 10 years has been in the Indonesia market, working for leading companies of Solenis, Nalco Water, GE Water, Fichtner, and Ion Exchange. Nam has over 25 years’ experience in the water and wastewater treatment industry in various roles as country representative, and projects and business development director for leading multinationals such as Veolia Water Solutions.

“Customers are adopting our customized and complete solutions which they acknowledge will significantly reduce cost and simplify management of their water and wastewater treatment operations,” said Gradiant Indonesia MD K Sadanand. “Customers are delivered treated water, consistently and reliably, to their water quality and quantity requirements. With rapid industrialization pressures and increasingly strict environmental regulations, our clients will need to solve their water challenges in performance- and cost-optimized approaches. We are excited to help solve water and wastewater problems in Indonesia by providing sustainable end-to-end solutions.”

Since its inception in early 2020, the Gradiant Vietnam team has achieved substantial headway in the region with a growing pipeline of projects that are contracted, or in late-stage negotiations. “Our technologies are an apt fit for the value-driven Vietnamese market. This coupled with our team’s ability to develop, deliver, own, and operate as end-to-end solutions will enable our clients to fully address their water and wastewater challenges,” said Gradiant Vietnam MD Thai Nam Nguyen.

“Thai Nam Nguyen and K Sadanand will be incredible assets for our customers as they look to transform their businesses and infrastructure in these regions. Their local expertise will leverage Gradiant’s global resources and know-how, to ensure we are meeting the full needs of the regions’ customers,” said Sankar Natarajan, who heads the company’s project acquisition efforts for Southeast Asia. “Asia Pacific serves a critical role in the global supply chain with over 40% of the world’s manufacturing. Vietnam and Indonesia require effective and optimized water solutions to balance rapid industrialization with sustainable growth.”

The recent success in Indonesia and Vietnam further cements the company’s continuing rise in the Asia-Pacific region as a market leader. Gradiant Achieves Strong Growth Across Asia in Cleantech Water Treatment during the Pandemic

  • Gradiant demonstrated strong growth during the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic
  • Gradiant won 26 new projects in 2021 YTD across the Asia Pacific region
  • Contract wins are in cleantech water treatment solutions with new clients, applications, markets, and geographies, including long-term DBOOM concession agreements
  • Since the onset of the pandemic, Gradiant has secured 56 new projects with a total contract value of over US$514 million
  •  Gradiant’s team has grown to 350 people, with almost all new headcount growth in the Asia Pacific region

Gradiant, an end-to-end cleantech water treatment solutions provider, announced that it has secured 26 new projects in 2021 year-to-date (YTD) across the Asia Pacific (APAC) region.

Four of the projects will be delivered as design-build-own-operate-manage (DBOOM) contracts for long-term concession periods of up to 20 years. The business growth demonstrates increased demand for advanced water & wastewater treatment during the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.

The new contracts in 2021 YTD are a mix of high-profile clients in the industrial, municipal, and government sectors, including multinational brand owners. Eighteen of the 26 new projects in 2021 YTD are with new clients that have selected Gradiant for the first time to solve their complex water challenges. New applications for Gradiant’s technologies this year have been in lithium mining, semiconductor fabrication, and high complexity industrial wastewater reuse.

“Our business has thrived this year at Gradiant, despite the challenging market dynamics brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Prakash Govindan, Co-Founder and COO of Gradiant. “We have adapted to the evolving needs of the market by taking on new clients to penetrate new strategic COVID-resistant market segments in semiconductors, mining, and personal protective equipment (PPE). Facilities equipped with Gradiant’s SmartOps(TM) asset management and remote monitoring & control systems continue to produce mission-critical water during the COVID-related travel and access restrictions. Since the onset of the pandemic in early 2020 until today, Gradiant has been awarded 56 new projects, delivering a total contract value of over US$514 million. We are proud of these accomplishments while managing through the pandemic – these results are only possible because of the commitment and passion of our team and our customers.”

Gradiant is committed to the Asia Pacific region. Almost all Gradiant’s growth in 2021 YTD has been in Asia Pacific, where the region’s rapid urbanisation and population growth have been driving the demand of clean and sustainable technologies. Gradiant won new contracts to build facilities for the first time in Indonesia, Vietnam, and even Antarctica. Gradiant’s team has grown from 250 people at the end of 2020, to about 350 people in 2021 YTD – almost all headcount growth has been in the Asia Pacific region, mainly in their Singapore Regional HQ and R&D Center.

Research from MSCI(*) has indicated growing attention to sustainability among investors, who have recognised that companies with strong environmental, social and governance practices in Asia are outperforming their counterparts. These regional trends suggest growing need for brand owners to adopt sustainable business practices, placing greater importance for cleantech solutions providers such as Gradiant to support their operations.

“We are experiencing another year of robust growth at Gradiant,” said Luke Johnson, CFO of Gradiant. “Growth remains consistently strong across our strategic market segments in semiconductors, mining, and pharmaceuticals, and our new contract wins support the market’s sustained demand for cleantech solutions and DBOOM concession agreements. We have proven this year that our acquisitions of Sigma Water (Malaysia) and CRS Water (Australia) in 2020 created synergies to access new customers, applications, and geographies, when married to Gradiant’s clean water technologies and project development and financing capabilities.”
