EdgePoint Launches Two More Digital Classrooms in East Malaysia under Its Connectivity for Communities Program

EdgePoint Infrastructure (“EdgePoint”), an ASEAN-based independent telecommunications infrastructure company, has announced two additional digital classrooms in East Malaysia under its regional corporate social responsibility (CSR) Connectivity for Communities (CFC). The first digital classroom is in Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Kuala Abai in Kota Belud, Sabah and the second was launched by their local partners in Sarawak, Demanlink Connexion Sdn Bhd, in Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Simunjan No. 1.

Both initiatives share the objective of bringing connectivity to underserved areas, fostering digital inclusivity and bridging the digital gap, and brings the total number of digital classrooms established to four in Malaysia and fourteen across ASEAN.

At the launch of the digital classroom in Kota Belud, Muniff Kamaruddin, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of EdgePoint Towers, said, “The launch of the two new digital classrooms in Sabah and Sarawak is an extension of our focus to bridge the digital divide across underserved communities in East Malaysia. We have seen how students in other locations have benefited from connectivity and we are committed to creating more opportunities for education and growth by bringing digital access to those who need it most. The response to our CFC programs has been very encouraging, with surrounding communities also using access to the internet to improve their quality of lives. We are grateful for the continued support from all stakeholders who have worked together with us to equip teachers, students, and their families with the tools to achieve equitable digital literacy towards upward social mobility.

Present to launch the digital classroom in Simunjan, Sarawak were Demanlink Connexion Sdn. Bhd, and representatives from the Sarawak State Education Department and Simunjan District Education Office. Hanad Yusuf, CEO of Demanlink, said “Connectivity is more than just access to the internet for students in Sarawak, it is access to opportunity. Many rural areas in Sarawak still struggle with limited or no internet coverage, which continues to widen the digital divide and hinder access to education, economic participation, healthcare and other essential services. The Connectivity for Communities project is helping to close that gap by empowering children in rural communities here with the tools to thrive in a digital world. We launched the first digital classroom last year in Long Miri, and we have already seen real results where student attendance and exam scores have improved significantly, as they now have access to online learning platforms, more engaging teaching material and even options for self-improvement online.”

In the past year, EdgePoint launched two other schools in Malaysia located in Karak, Pahang and Miri, Sarawak. The CFC program includes ongoing digital literacy initiatives, delivered in partnership with local teachers and NGOs, to ensure students can maximise their learning and navigate the digital future confidently. To date, the program has impacted over 7,800 students in Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines with significant improvement in attendance and exam scores recorded among these students. Our in-house assessments have shown that students in Malaysia have recorded an 85% improvement in digital skills. EdgePoint aims to expand the program to a total of 23 schools by the end of 2025, reaffirming its commitment to supporting digital inclusion and literacy in underserved communities across ASEAN.

  • TransNusa successfully started sale of tickets on February 24th with a promotional rate of IDR2.388.000, CNY999 and USD149, one-way
  • TransNusa continuously expands international route and strengthens Bali base in Indonesia

TRANSNUSA has created history yet again and became the first Indonesian airline to launch scheduled flights from Bali, Indonesia to Guangzhou, China. The launch, which took place today, saw TransNusa’s flight, 8B 969, depart Bali on April 13 at 20.15pm and arrive at the Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, as scheduled at 01.00am on April 14.

This move, being a strategic triumph for the airline, was launched weeks after the launch of the airline’s new scheduled Bali-Perth route on March 20.

TransNusa Group Chief Executive Officer and aviation veteran, Datuk Bernard Francis said that since TransNusa’s re-launch as a Premium Service Carrier in 2022, the airline has focused on meeting the needs and wants of our passengers.

“Our main priority and focus is to create new exciting routes for our passengers and offer seamless and fast travels, whether through direct routes or transits routes.” Datuk Francis added.

Details of the new Route
TransNusa launched its Bali-Guangzhou route at a promotional price that starts from IDR2.388.000, CNY999 and USD149. TransNusa tickets are available for purchase at transnusa.co.id and all other main online travel agent platforms worldwide.

“With the launch of this new route, we hope to provide tourists from China additional options to travel to the Island of Gods, Bali,” Datuk Francis said, adding that TransNusa will also provide its passengers with options to visit other major tourist destinations from Bali, such as Indonesia’s diving haven, the island of Manado.

At the initial stage, from April 13th to May 31st, TransNusa will be operating four flights a week from I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, popularly known as the Denpasar International Airport. The TransNusa flight, 8B 969, will depart Bali at 20.15pm and arrive at the Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport at 01.00am while TransNusa flight, 8B 968, will depart Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport at 02.05am and arrive in Bali at 07.40am. The TransNusa flight will depart Bali every Monday, Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday, while flights will depart Guangzhou on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday. For this scheduled flight, TransNusa will be utilizing its A320 narrow-body jet airliner, which has 174 seats, to cater for the five-hour scheduled flight.

Datuk Francis explained that the airline will increase the frequency of the scheduled Bali-Guangzhou route from four times weekly to daily flights from June 1st onwards.

Brief History On TransNusa
TransNusa, which had to close business due to the Covid-19 pandemic was injected with new shareholders and management team in 2022. The airline opened its doors for business in October and within six months, in April 2023, launched its first international flight from Jakarta to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

After which, under the new leadership of Datuk Francis, and the new management team, the airline successfully launched three more new international routes by the end of 2023. In 2024, the airline continued growing its international and domestic route and at the same time recording historical firsts that also became a significant industry first for the Indonesian aviation industry.

Since April 2023, TransNusa has been making headlines in Malaysia, Singapore, China and around the world with news of being the first airline in Indonesia and the world to develop and introduce a new domestic route connecting Bali and diving haven, Manado. TransNusa also became the second Indonesian airline to receive approval to fly to China and provided Indonesians with more pricing and route options to China.

TransNusa’s aggressive international growth strategy combined with its domestic business operations approach has enabled the airline to be the fastest growing airline in South East Asia.

SCIB Reports 14.6% Revenue Growth to RM45.1 Million in Q1FY2025

The Company’s Manufacturing Division Remains a Key Contributor Amid Market Volatility

Industrialised building systems specialist, Sarawak Consolidated Industries Berhad (SCIB or the Company) is pleased to announce its unaudited financial results for the first quarter of the fiscal year 2025 (Q1 FY2025). The Company reported a revenue of RM45.1 million, marking a 14.6% year-on-year increase compared to RM39.4 million in Q1 FY2024. The growth in revenue is largely due to the increased recognition of construction works done from ongoing projects.

Ku Chong Hong, Managing Director of SCIB
Ku Chong Hong, Managing Director of SCIB

As for Q1FY2025, SCIB’s Manufacturing division continues to play a pivotal role in the Company’s performance, contributing RM32.5 million to the total revenue, a 9.9% increase from RM29.6 million in Q1 FY2024. This growth was primarily driven by increased sales of foundation piles and Industrialised Building System (“IBS”) products, especially for major projects such as the Kuching Urban Transportation System (“KUTS”), the Sarawak Second Trunk Road (“STR”) and school projects in Sarawak.

Profit Before Tax (“PBT”) for the manufacturing segment stood at RM3.8 million. Meanwhile, the Construction/Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning (“EPCC”) division reported revenue of RM12.6 million, an increase from RM9.8 million in the same quarter last year. However, the segment recorded a Loss Before Tax (“LBT”) of RM2.0 million due to unanticipated unrealised foreign exchange loss recognised. The division remains focused on delivering ongoing projects while exploring new opportunities for expansion.

During the quarter, SCIB maintained its commitment to strengthening its financial foundation and broadening its project portfolio. Additionally, SCIB had recently acquired a 2.49-hectares land parcel at Bintulu Sibiu Road, Bintulu, for RM9.2 million, followed by another parcel of 7.3-hectares land in Jalan Bintulu-Sibu as part of its plan to collaborate  with developers for residential housing projects that utilise SCIB’s high-quality products and industry expertise, while expanding SCIB’s products and services offering to serve the fundamental needs of the Sarawak market.

Mr. Ku Chong Hong, Managing Director of SCIB, commented, “The results of Q1 FY2025 reflect the challenges of a dynamic economic environment. However, we remain steadfast in our commitment to strengthening the financial foundation of the Company. Besides targeting to secure projects consistently, the recent securing of financial facilities from SME Bank and the proposed private placement of 10.0% of SCIB’s total issued shares underscore our focus on enhancing our cash position and ensuring financial stability to support our operational and strategic initiatives.”

Looking ahead, SCIB remains optimistic about Malaysia’s construction sector, bolstered by the record allocation in Budget 2025 of RM421 billion, including RM86 billion for development expenditure. The RM5.9 billion allocated for Sarawak, aimed at upgrading public infrastructure such as schools, healthcare centres, and airports, as well as large-scale projects like the Sabah-Sarawak Link Road (“SSLR”) and the North Coastal Highway, aligns seamlessly with SCIB’s expertise and strategic direction. The Company is poised to leverage its manufacturing capabilities and strategic initiatives to secure a strong foothold in both local and regional markets, ensuring sustainable growth and long-term value for its stakeholders.

Genetec maintains stable and profitable performance on a lower Q1FY2025 revenue

Technology leader in providing turnkey, intelligent manufacturing automation solutions, GENETEC TECHNOLOGY BERHAD (“Genetec” or the “Company”), announced its financial results for the first quarter of its new financial year (“Q1FY2025). Despite the lower Year-on-Year (“YoY”) revenue, Genetec showcases its resilience with the continued profitability and high-double digit margins.

The Company recorded revenue of RM40.2 million and gross profit (“GP”) of RM7.3 million for its Q1FY2025 ending 30 September 2024. It also reported profit before tax (“PBT”) of RM4.4 million, profit after tax (“PAT”) of RM4.1 million and profit after tax and minority interest (PATAMI) of RM4.8 million. Genetec continues to maintain double-digit margins for its GP, PBT, PAT and PATAMI of 18.2%, 10.9%, 10.2% and 11.9%, respectively.

Genetec acknowledged that the last quarter has been challenging for the business which it believes was mainly attributed to policy uncertainties from the client’s operating markets. With the conclusion of the U.S. Presidential election and European policy developments, particularly on inflation, import tariffs, and decarbonisation, there is a sense of relief and clarity, and companies are moving forward with their capital expenditure with greater certainty.

The Company, leveraging its expertise in customised automation technology and project execution, continue to work closely with its clients to deliver tailored solutions aimed at enhancing manufacturing automation, improving efficiency and increasing production yield for its clients. With its strong track record, Genetec is confident in its ability to continue to build trust and secure recurring business from its clients. Its high client retention rate stands as a testament to its exceptional performance and has been a key factor in the Company’s success. This strong foundation enables the Company to broaden its scope and product offerings with other divisions within the organisation of its existing clients to grow revenue over the long-term. At the same time, the Company’s business development team continue to explore new opportunities in new markets and industries, leveraging on its extensive experience and proven success working with leading international and reputable clients.

Genetec’s Battery Energy Storage System (“BESS”) business is slowly gaining traction as it executes smaller-scale but strategically significant projects in both domestic and international markets. The Company remains confident that its execution capabilities and international track record will position Genetec favourably. Market developments such as the government’s recently announced Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS) through interest in pairing BESS technology with solar projects, will also support demand for BESS moving forward, and is a step in achieving 70 percent renewable energy in the capacity mix by 2050[1].

Moving forward, Genetec remains committed to its strategy and focus on operational efficiency, strict cost management. With its low gearing levels and recent sale of subsidiary CLT Engineering Sdn Bhd to add to its already strong cash position, Genetec is positioning itself to ramp up operations in the coming months.
