Genetec Sets the Stage for Higher Growth Following a Strong Q3FY2024 Performance

Timely execution and delivery of high-quality projects, boosted by new products and business development efforts ramps up momentum for its electric vehicle and energy storage segments

Key Financial Performance Highlights for Q3FY2024:

  • Strong RM76.9 million revenue, with margins jumping to high double-digits.
  • PBT for the quarter stands at RM25.2 million, with a margin of 32.7%.
  • PAT for the quarter stands at RM22.9 million, with a margin of 29.8%.

Technology leader in providing fully customised, intelligent manufacturing automation solutions, GENETEC TECHNOLOGY BERHAD (Genetec or the Company) recorded another strong quarter for their third quarter financial year 2024 (Q3FY2024), continuing the strong business and execution momentum highlighted at the beginning of the FY2024. The Company recorded a higher revenue vis-à-vis the preceding quarter, with all major financial indicators showing significant double-digit growth. This is notable despite the year-on-year (YoY) decrease in revenue for the quarter to RM76.9 million from Q3FY2023’s RM85.1 million. Genetec’s profit before tax (PBT) and profit after tax (PAT) stood at RM25.2 million and RM22.9 million for the quarter under review versus RM13.9 million and RM12.5 million a year ago.

The Company delivered a high gross profit margin of 46.8%, which reflects a 16.2% increase on a YoY basis. This increase is attributed to higher margins in its product mix for the quarter under review. Genetec reiterated that the lower turnover for Q3FY2024 was not reflective of the pipeline strength or sentiment, but the project progressions and billings, as is typical in industries with large project values. The Company said the Electric Vehicle (EV) and Energy Storage segments continued to maintain its dominance as Genetec’s primary revenue stream, contributing nearly 100% of total revenue, accumulated over the last nine months.

Genetec Co-founder and Managing Director Chin Kem Weng highlighted, “Our efforts in 2023 are paying off as Genetec continues our momentum into New Year 2024. As a Group, the teams have been working hard on our product and business development to secure our pipeline and to build new leads across all our business segments, especially in renewable energy with MYBESS. As such, our performance for this quarter remains strong and consistent with our outlook at the beginning of our financial year 2024 (FY2024). In addition, all key financial metrics show double-digit growth, reinforcing the Group’s discipline and management of our supply chain. Moving forward, we are optimistic on the Company’s performance and the timelines in translating the projects secured to be reflected in the remaining quarters for the financial year ending 2024.”

Chin emphasised that, countries globally are ramping up efforts in RE although the timeline of the shift will be for the long-term. Likewise for Malaysia, the shift to RE and EVs continue to gain traction due to increasing pressure from governments and consumers. “The S&P Global Commodity Insights forecast nearly USD 800 billion in clean energy investments for 2024, which is 10% – 20% higher than 2023 levels[1]. Following many years of policy discussions and framework launches, 2024 is a year of execution. This is a time for infrastructure planning, spending and set up to support the shift away from fossil fuel to electric. Companies in the ecosystem, especially EVs are ramping up their production capacities to cater to future demand. As Genetec is in the business of capital expenditure (CAPEX), we have been working hard to position ourselves as the go-to end-to-end turnkey solutions provider for intelligent automation for EV and as of 2023, for RE.”

Genetec added that it will continue to capitalise on such factors while also actively exploring other growth opportunities. At the end of the quarter, Genetec’s earnings per share (“EPS”) stood at 3.04 sen (fully diluted) compared to 2.41 sen (fully diluted) in Q2FY2024.

BluWave-ai and Dubai Taxi Corporation Debut AI Optimization of EV Fleet

  • BluWave-ai EV Fleet Orchestrator shows 13% improvement in efficiency for COP28 Tesla taxi fleet connected via Smartcar’s vehicle API

Aligned with COP28 Transport Day and the UAE’s sustainability goals, BluWave-ai and Dubai Taxi Corporation (DTC) announced the results of their collaboration to introduce a revolutionary AI software-driven energy optimization solution for DTC’s fleet of 200 Tesla electric vehicles (EVs) in a world’s first-ever achievement. Dubai Taxi has an ambitious electrification program, replacing conventional fossil-fueled taxis with Teslas in order to meet its sustainability targets, one of the first taxi fleets in the world to do this.

BluWave-ai and Dubai Taxi

The solution, BluWave-ai EV Fleet Orchestrator automatically solves the problem of when, where, and by how much an EV taxi should charge in order to be charged and ready for service at the right times and avoid missing out on trips while charging. The system optimizes road network and charging/grid side operations in real-time, 24×7 eliminating the need for human operators to manually make decisions to deal with operational challenges. It also reacts to changes in the road network as well as in the charging infrastructure availability.

The deployment of BluWave-ai’s EV Fleet Orchestrator with DTC’s electric fleet has demonstrated significant improvement in operating efficiency for the overall fleet:

– 12% increase in revenue from the EV fleet
– 13% increase in EV paid trip distance driven
– 52% decrease in fossil fueled vehicle km driven to cover EVs while they charge
– Reduced or eliminated need for fast charging, which will result in extended EV battery life.

By going live with BluWave-ai’s EV Fleet Orchestrator, DTC is the first taxi operator to deploy the AI approach. The results show that by saving operational costs, the system quickly pays for itself. As part of the solution, a dashboard is included that provides an easy comprehensive view of the savings and reduction in emissions.

BluWave-ai’s EV Fleet Orchestrator solution runs on a comprehensive city-wide taxi trip demand model built from trip records spanning multiple years of taxi operations. It pulls in operating data from the EV taxi fleet in real time using a direct over-the-air telematics integration to Tesla vehicles via the Smartcar API, as a result of a partnership between the two companies. By registering the DTC Tesla taxis with BluWave-ai via the Smartcar API, real-time data on taxi telematics and state of charge was instantly fed to AI models. These models predicted where and when to best charge and position vehicles for fare maximization while maximizing electric miles on the road and using energy at favourable times for the grid.

“Smartcar is proud to bring our vehicle API technology to the BluWave-ai EV Fleet Orchestrator,” said Sahas Katta, CEO of Smartcar. “This partnership is pivotal in helping reduce carbon emissions from vehicle fleets by enabling BluWave-ai to seamlessly integrate with DTC’s Tesla EV fleets, power AI-driven optimization, and accelerate the path to realizing operational benefits.”

“By hooking up our EV Fleet Orchestrator to the network, once live data comes through to the cloud and starts training models, it quickly is able to optimize the system performance and deploy those models for DTC’s fleet,” said Devashish Paul, BluWave-ai founder and CEO. “We are proud to work with DTC as a forward-thinking taxi fleet operator, having validated the benefits in both operational costs and lifetime cost of ownership.”

Plans for Electric Vehicle Battery Charging Facilities in Southeast Asia with Groundbreaking Battery Checking Service

  • These facilities aim to boost the adoption of EVs in the region and help meet ASEAN’s target to achieving net-zero by 2050

Tinergy Renewable Energy, a pioneer in renewable energy solutions, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Santa New Energy, to build electric vehicle battery checking centres in Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia. Santa New Energy is an important strategic investment of Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd (CATL), the world’s leading battery provider and the largest maker of electric vehicle (EV) batteries.

Currently, batteries in EVs do not get checked nor tested when they are being charged at charging stations and drivers will only be informed of the battery’s deteriorating health when they receive a warning light. The planned battery charging and checking centre will be equipped with battery online detection technology pioneered by Santa New Energy to provide complete and comprehensive battery checking in a single charge process without the need to dismantle the vehicle or change the vehicle strategy.

To bring about this solution in Asia, Tinergy Renewable Energy has recently partnered with B2G Energies, a leading renewable energy company, in a separate MoU signing ceremony to bring about solutions for low-carbon cities. This is done by conducting feasibility studies, identifying suitable technologies, and setting clear objectives for reducing carbon emissions.

“As Singapore targets phasing out combustion car sales by 2030, and with various incentives put in place to encourage the adoption of EVs, there needs to be effective and reliable EV battery checking facilities to ensure the longevity and sustainability of EV batteries,” said Garry Tay, Founder and CEO of B2G Energies. “Our collaboration with Tinergy Energies and Santa New Energy to bring this facility to Singapore and is in support of the Singapore Green Plan 2030 by the Singapore government, aimed at reducing carbon emissions.”

“Tapping on CATL’s battery expertise and development, Santa New Energy has developed the world’s first EV battery charging and checking system that is fast, efficient, and easy to implement with low cost, high precision and accuracy,” said Xue Kai Lei, Executive Director of Santa New Energy. “We have already successfully implemented our technology at the world’s first low carbon park in Xiamen, China, integrating EV power battery technology research and development, power battery big data center, battery checking, and new energy vehicle after-sales service, and plans to replicate the model in this region.”

China has the largest EV market in the world, accounting for 60% of the total EV globally. By bringing Chinese expertise on EV batteries and adopting Santa New Enegy’s low carbon park model in Xiamen to this part of the world, the consortium aims to provide a comprehensive EV after-sales service in Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia. These services include battery maintenance and repair, second-hand EV sales evaluation, battery recycling, and other EV-related needs.

From L-R: Mr Li Bing, Mr Wang (Tinergy Renewable Energy), Mr Xue (Santa New Energy), Mr Garry Tay (B2G Energies), Mr Zhao, Mr Fang (Santa New Energy) at the carbon park in Xiamen

Milo Zhang, Founder of Tinergy Renewable Energy said, “Tinergy is at the forefront of providing renewable energy solutions to reducing carbon emissions, conserving resources, and creating a more sustainable world. Our MoU with B2G Energies and Santa New Energy is an important step in building these battery checking facilities and infrastructure in the region, as part of the region’s push to get more drivers to adopt EVs.”

The adoption of EVs in Southeast Asia in comparison is very low, making up only 2.1% of total vehicle sales in Southeast Asia in 2022 due to the slow development of charging infrastructure and the relatively higher cost of EVs. This collaboration promises a more reliable and friendly EV charging infrastructure that can simultaneously check the battery health while providing a charge to the vehicle. This would help in boosting the adoption of EVs in the region and meet the region’s targets to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions or to become carbon neutral by 2050. More detailed information on the locations of the battery checking facility will be announced at later dates.

How the Valo Hyperfoil is playing a leading role in the marine mobility revolution

Why is foiling the future, and how can it give you the ride of your life? How one visionary company started with those questions and let their ideas take flight.

Valo Hyperfoil is a two-person electric foiling PWC (personal watercraft) that seamlessly combines an exhilarating experience with visionary design

Tech start-up Valo has revealed more details of its revolutionary new personal watercraft, the Valo Hyperfoil. This unique new product has already seen immense demand from consumers, with the limited production run of Founder’s Edition vehicles to be built in 2024 already being oversubscribed by 300%. The general production run is scheduled for 2025 with pre-orders currently open.

The Valo Hyperfoil is a two-person, high-performance, all-electric thrill ride that marks the evolution of the jet ski. Having moved from concept to first prototype in a matter of months, the rapid pace of development matches the scintillating performance and handling that it offers riders. The craft features a twin-foil setup with a 45kW drive motor and proprietary Skyride flight stabilization system.

With retracting foils, the Valo Hypefoil is easy launched and transportable on a standard trailer

Inspired engineering

It’s a dream that Ed Kearney – the company’s founder and CEO – has held since childhood when his father showed him a video of an early foiler. “I was about 12 or 13 years old, and my dad – who was an inventor kind of guy – showed me this video of some MIT students who had built a pedal-powered hydrofoil boat that broke the world record for a human-powered boat because it was so efficient,” Kearney says. “I remember asking myself, why aren’t all boats like this? Here is a technology that can completely revolutionize how we transport things on the water by making them ten times more efficient and incredibly comfortable at the same time”.

Born and raised in Australia and studying engineering before moving to California seven years ago, Kearney noticed that there was not much in the way of commercial hydrofoil development. “So I said why don’t we just do this? I wanted to create something no one else was making, because it was captivating and the world needed it.”

Taking flight

It is these cues from other industries, and drawing on the expertise of people like pioneering foiling naval architect Paul Bieker who serves as a consulting designer on Valo’s designs, that have led to the rapid development of the Valo Hyperfoil. The team – which was joined in early 2023 by CTO Reo Baird, a tech entrepreneur and boat fanatic who had previously been developing foiling boats with the company Navier – moved from concept to prototype in just six months, showing not only the pace and flexibility of an agile start-up but also proving that the concept was built on rock-solid design and engineering principles.

Since then, the team has tweaked the design to further enhance the experience for riders, moving to a twin-foil canard system for the foils aligned fore and aft on the centreline, and with the aft strut also housing the shaft-driven propulsion unit. The new design has resulted in 33% less strut drag than the alpha prototype while conferring improved stability and agility, and an increased maximum bank angle. Anhedral (swept-down) wings now deliver 30% more roll authority and contribute to the improved max bank angle.

The Valo Hyperfoil is fully computer stabilized

Technological two-step

At the core of the Valo Hyperfoil’s performance is the clever foil package and shaft-driven propulsion system, which can propel the craft at a max speed of 35 knots while offering over two hours of endurance, good for more than 60 miles on a single charge. When combined with the proprietary Skyride active stabilization software, the Valo Hyperfoil represents a double step forward in marine mobility.

Skyride is developed fully in-house and has the role of keeping the vehicle stable as it slices through the water and waves. Hydrofoil vehicles are inherently unstable and hard to control since their center of gravity is very high above the point of support, just like walking on long stilts or riding a unicycle – balancing something very top-heavy is hard. Added to that, the vehicle has to operate very close to the surface of the water without going too high or too low.

Skyride solves this by combining data from various sensors around the Valo Hyperfoil and using aerospace derived algorithms to deliver hundreds of micro-adjustments per second to the various mechanical actuators that control the craft to keep it stable and agile.

“The Valo Hyperfoil is fully computer stabilized, and when you turn it enters into what’s called a coordinated banked turn,” CTO Reo Baird explains. “Think of it exactly like when a plane banks and turns, you don’t feel you are being pushed out of the turn and your coffee doesn’t spill because the forces run straight up and down through your vertical axis. This is how the Valo Hyperfoil turns using the Skyride software, and it’s truly exhilarating – and it allows for tight, highly precise turns. Making it feel good is not that straightforward – it’s something we’ve worked on a lot and it’s something we’ve solved!”

The software also allows for various modes – normal and sport, for example – while including full safety features. “The sport mode is designed to deliver much more exhilaration with sharper and harder handling,” says Baird, “but there are also lots of safety elements at the limit to make sure you can’t roll the Valo Hyperfoil over or crash. The software does have a more controlled hand in how the Valo Hyperfoil behaves,” he adds, “but we also want to make sure the driver feels like he is controlling the vehicle. It’s not like using cruise control on a car – it’s heavily weighted to the inputs on steering and throttle from the rider but while maintaining full stability to keep it safe. It’s a very delicate balance and it’s one I think we’ve struck perfectly.”

Practical magic

Central to the ethos of the Valo Hyperfoil is not only to make it as thrilling and as enjoyable as possible, but also to focus on reliability, robustness and practicality. What this means in practice is that construction will draw on high-quality parts, from carbon fiber, titanium and stainless steel for the body construction to selecting known suppliers for the components – the battery system and electric motor, for example, are being sourced from experienced manufacturers in the US and UK respectively.

Further, the team has considered how the Valo Hyperfoil is likely to be used when designing key elements. Not only is the Valo Hyperfoil trailerable on a standard rig, it can also be beached just like a conventional jet ski thanks to a lifting front canard – the foil slots into a recess in the hull – and a rear strut that tils similar to an outboard, allowing for shallow water propulsion. “It may not seem as simple as having a vertical lifting rear element,” says Kearney, “but the truth is those vertical lifting struts with drive elements can be a nightmare for jamming down or up. Our solution is both highly reliable and highly practical, which means riders can focus fully on the fun without fear of something going wrong.”

What’s more, the nod to sustainable boating with zero emissions, noise and wake means Valo Hyoerfoil riders will be able to explore places that other personal watercraft can’t access – and be able to do so without disturbing other people in the same area. This, perhaps, is as much the leap forward in personal water mobility as the design and hyperformance of the Valo Hyperfoil itself.

Future present

As Valo Hyperfoil moves toward production, with delivery of the first Founder’s Edition models scheduled for 2024, the company is celebrating the pre-launch success of their creation – they have taken more than US$3.3 million in advance orders already. They are also well into the development of a new product range for boat builders so they can easily enter the electric foiling era.

“It very much feels like the dawn of a new age for the marine industry,” says CTO Reo Baird. “It’s clearly the right time and place for the marine industry to make this move forward toward a new type of marine mobility.”

“It’s clean, with zero emissions, zero noise and zero wake; it’s fun, because you can enjoy exhilarating hyperformance in a wide range of sea conditions; it’s safe and comfortable because the Skyride software takes care of everything; and it’s practical, because you can do everything and go anywhere a conventional jet ski can go, and more besides,” Baird concludes. “It’s the future, and it’s right here, right now. We’re very excited to be moving into the production phase, and from the number of orders we’ve already received I think there are a lot of excited people out there too.”

As Kearney himself will tell you, “The Future is Foiling.”
