OpenADR Alliance Launches New Communications Standard to Help Utilities Manage Growth in Renewable Energy Sources and EV Charging

The OpenADR Alliance, the global industry body created to foster the development, adoption, and compliance of OpenADR, has launched a new version of its OpenADR communications standard. OpenADR 3.0 is designed to support utilities, operators, aggregators, and customers as they try to manage the growing range of distributed energy resources (DER) including renewables, energy storage, electric vehicle (EV) batteries and charging infrastructure, as well as demand response resources like commercial buildings or homes.

As an open standard, OpenADR provides highly secure, fast, and reliable two-way information exchange for utility applications with simple communications needs like dynamic price and event signals, allowing customers to modify their usage to save money and reduce their carbon footprint.

With the launch of OpenADR 3.0, device and equipment manufacturers will be able to add new functionality more easily into customer products, including smart thermostats, EV charging stations, energy storage, and control systems.

Managing & Technical Director for the OpenADR Alliance, Rolf Bienert, comments: “Renewable energy, along with battery storage, is providing a growing share of overall power capacity as we move towards a more sustainable energy future. This means that energy companies are having to manage more decentralised and distributed energy resources, scaling operations while ensuring compatibility and interoperability.

“OpenADR is critical in providing seamless communications between different devices and systems, and between utilities and customers. OpenADR 3.0 provides simplicity at a time when technology is becoming more complex, making energy management easier and future-proofing energy systems. It offers a new alternative using modern web service designs that are easier to use than older message style exchange formats, while also providing added functionality.”

With OpenADR 2.0 used by many utilities and vendors, there are no plans to replace it; OpenADR 3.0 is designed to complement older versions of the standard. Aside from the functionality of 2.0, OpenADR 3.0 simplifies messaging, including pricing, offering more dynamic pricing structures, as well as better enabling greenhouse gas signalling, grid code adjustments, and capacity management communication (e.g., dynamic operating envelopes).

Bruce Nordman, a scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and member of the team that created OpenADR 3.0, says: “OpenADR 3.0 opens up new possibilities for customers and customer devices. It is so easy to implement that it can readily be put into any customer device (even a Wi-Fi light bulb) for receipt of grid signals, and also used for communication between customer devices. OpenADR 3.0 also supports two mechanisms for capacity management between the grid and the customer.”

Pacific Gas & Electric’s (PG&E) Albert Chiu adds: “As renewable generation and electrification increases with more distributed energy resources, energy flexibility and load management become even more important. With the new and improved OpenADR 3.0, we expect to see more growth in the quantity and diversity of OpenADR certified products and solutions, which will make it easier for customers when participating in load management programs and dynamic rates. All of these activities are critical for PG&E and CA to reach its carbon reduction goal in the future.”

OpenADR 3.0 testing and certification OpenADR certification encourages the development of a global ecosystem of standards-based products, eliminating single-vendor lock-in and ensuring interoperability. Members can apply soon for OpenADR 3.0 testing and certification, but only products or systems that have been through the OpenADR Alliance Certification Program can claim OpenADR certified status. Testing will be conducted at one of 10 approved test facilities using test assets created by the OpenADR Alliance in collaboration with other vendors. The OpenADR Alliance has several companies now piloting the new OpenADR 3.0 standard.

Plans for Electric Vehicle Battery Charging Facilities in Southeast Asia with Groundbreaking Battery Checking Service

  • These facilities aim to boost the adoption of EVs in the region and help meet ASEAN’s target to achieving net-zero by 2050

Tinergy Renewable Energy, a pioneer in renewable energy solutions, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Santa New Energy, to build electric vehicle battery checking centres in Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia. Santa New Energy is an important strategic investment of Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd (CATL), the world’s leading battery provider and the largest maker of electric vehicle (EV) batteries.

Currently, batteries in EVs do not get checked nor tested when they are being charged at charging stations and drivers will only be informed of the battery’s deteriorating health when they receive a warning light. The planned battery charging and checking centre will be equipped with battery online detection technology pioneered by Santa New Energy to provide complete and comprehensive battery checking in a single charge process without the need to dismantle the vehicle or change the vehicle strategy.

To bring about this solution in Asia, Tinergy Renewable Energy has recently partnered with B2G Energies, a leading renewable energy company, in a separate MoU signing ceremony to bring about solutions for low-carbon cities. This is done by conducting feasibility studies, identifying suitable technologies, and setting clear objectives for reducing carbon emissions.

From L-R: B2G Energies Founder and CEO, Garry Tay and Tinergy Renewable Energy Founder, Milo Zhang signing the MoU

“As Singapore targets phasing out combustion car sales by 2030, and with various incentives put in place to encourage the adoption of EVs, there needs to be effective and reliable EV battery checking facilities to ensure the longevity and sustainability of EV batteries,” said Garry Tay, Founder and CEO of B2G Energies. “Our collaboration with Tinergy Energies and Santa New Energy to bring this facility to Singapore and is in support of the Singapore Green Plan 2030 by the Singapore government, aimed at reducing carbon emissions.”

“Tapping on CATL’s battery expertise and development, Santa New Energy has developed the world’s first EV battery charging and checking system that is fast, efficient, and easy to implement with low cost, high precision and accuracy,” said Xue Kai Lei, Executive Director of Santa New Energy. “We have already successfully implemented our technology at the world’s first low carbon park in Xiamen, China, integrating EV power battery technology research and development, power battery big data center, battery checking, and new energy vehicle after-sales service, and plans to replicate the model in this region.”

China has the largest EV market in the world, accounting for 60% of the total EV globally. By bringing Chinese expertise on EV batteries and adopting Santa New Enegy’s low carbon park model in Xiamen to this part of the world, the consortium aims to provide a comprehensive EV after-sales service in Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia. These services include battery maintenance and repair, second-hand EV sales evaluation, battery recycling, and other EV-related needs.

From L-R: Mr Li Bing, Mr Wang (Tinergy Renewable Energy), Mr Xue (Santa New Energy), Mr Garry Tay (B2G Energies), Mr Zhao, Mr Fang (Santa New Energy) at the carbon park in Xiamen

Milo Zhang, Founder of Tinergy Renewable Energy said, “Tinergy is at the forefront of providing renewable energy solutions to reducing carbon emissions, conserving resources, and creating a more sustainable world. Our MoU with B2G Energies and Santa New Energy is an important step in building these battery checking facilities and infrastructure in the region, as part of the region’s push to get more drivers to adopt EVs.”

The adoption of EVs in Southeast Asia in comparison is very low, making up only 2.1% of total vehicle sales in Southeast Asia in 2022 due to the slow development of charging infrastructure and the relatively higher cost of EVs. This collaboration promises a more reliable and friendly EV charging infrastructure that can simultaneously check the battery health while providing a charge to the vehicle. This would help in boosting the adoption of EVs in the region and meet the region’s targets to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions or to become carbon neutral by 2050. More detailed information on the locations of the battery checking facility will be announced at later dates.

REDEX Group raises $10M Series A funding led by Aramco Ventures

REDEX, Asia’s leading Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) solutions provider, announced today the successful completion of a USD 10 million Series A funding round.

REDEX’s mission is to accelerate the world’s transition towards renewable energy. The new funding will allow the company to expand beyond Asia, and to further innovate in streamlining and digitizing the issuance and trading of RECs.

Aramco Ventures led the investment, along with notable new investors from the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Japan. Aramco Ventures is the corporate venturing subsidiary of Aramco, the world’s leading fully integrated energy and petrochemical enterprise.

“REDEX is well positioned as the leading marketplace for I-RECs, which will enable renewable energy markets in many parts of the world. We look forward to collaborating with the REDEX team to extend this capability into new geographies,” said Bruce Niven, Executive MD, Strategic Venturing at Aramco Ventures.

Established in 2018, REDEX Group is a first-mover RECs player in Asia, offering a full suite of RECs management solutions covering asset registration, verification, trading, and retirement.

“We are witnessing tremendous growth in the adoption of RECs by brand owners striving to be 100% renewable, both for themselves and their supply chains,” said Jen-Wee Kang, Founder and CEO of REDEX. “The demand for green energy is very real, and the number of RECs issued and retired is more than doubling year on year. Building on the trust we have established with key players in the ecosystem, REDEX is well-positioned to play a leading role in the exponential growth of RECs adoption globally.”

As a concept, RECs are very simple – the instrument traces one’s power consumption to renewable energy sources. Its simplicity is precisely why the instrument is the most convenient and practical way for companies to achieve Scope 2 neutrality.

RECs are endorsed and adopted by RE100, the main consortium of leading brand owners committed to 100% renewable electricity. The consortium was originally formed in 2014 by 13 corporate partners. Today, RE100 has more than 400 members who consume around 400 TWh of power.

REDEX believes there is great potential to apply RECs creatively in the industrial sector, like for green aluminium, steel, and cement – commodities that are covered in the starting phase of Europe’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).

In April, the company announced that it was the first API-integrated Platform Operator Account on I-REC, the world’s largest RECs registry. In June, REDEX also announced its partnership with China Southern Grid, supporting the grid operator in its role as an I-REC Issuer in China.

ONGC Roadshow in Singapore: Collaboration Opportunities in Offshore Oil and Gas Projects

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) is organizing a roadshow in Singapore on 19 and 20 October 2023, to invite global oil and gas companies for collaboration opportunities in offshore oil and gas projects. The Roadshow will offer valuable insights into business opportunities within India’s offshore oil and gas infrastructure sector. The Roadshow is taking place in Hotel Pan Pacific, 7 Raffles Boulevard, Singapore.

In pursuit of strategic growth aligned with the evolving energy landscape, ONGC has meticulously designed an ambitious roadmap, the Energy Strategy 2040. This comprehensive plan reflects its resolute commitment to double oil and gas production, expand refining capacity, diversify into renewable energy, and bolster our non-oil and gas ventures.

To achieve substantial growth and diversify its energy portfolio, ONGC prioritizes the early monetization of discoveries through accelerated project execution. It is also making significant investments in Deepwater exploration, Improved Oil Recovery (IOR), and Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) projects, maximizing production efficiency and tapping untapped reserves.

Aligned with its growth plans, ONGC is embarking on an expedited development of multiple offshore fields over the next three years. Its objective is to establish more than 25 offshore facilities, lay over 1000 kilometers of subsea pipelines, and create associated infrastructure, requiring an investment of USD 11 billion.

As a trailblazer in India’s energy sector since 1956, ONGC remains dedicated to providing dependable and sustainable energy solutions. Recognizing the vital role hydrocarbons will play in India’s energy security and economic growth, ONGC looks forward to have a mutually beneficial relationship and long lasting partnership with its business partners.

BayWa r.e. Solar Trade Partners with Huawei to Launch EV Chargers in Thailand, Reinforcing Commitment to Thailand’s Sustainable Energy Transition

BayWa r.e. Solar Trade, the solar trading arm of the global renewable energy developer, service provider and solar distributor, launched the sale of Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers in partnership with Huawei in Thailand at the ASEAN Sustainable Energy Week 2023.

BayWa r.e. and Huawei unveiled the EV Chargers at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC) in Bangkok, officiated by Junrhey Castro, Managing Director of Solar Trade in Southeast Asia, and Nitinan Pooltananan, Business Development Manager at Huawei Digital Power Thailand.

Junrhey Castro, Director of Solar Trade in SEA, shared his perspective on the collaboration, stating, “As a recognised leading Solar Trade Business, we are thrilled to be working together with Huawei in promoting EV charger technology in Thailand. We are committed to helping the country in setting up charging stations nationwide through our partners and customers. We hope to make EV chargers readily accessible and empower individuals and businesses to actively participate in the transition to clean transportation solutions.”

Thailand’s commitment to carbon neutrality and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions at COP26, combined with the unexpected uncertainty in oil and gas prices, has accelerated Thailand’s EV market to a new peak. At the beginning of 2022, Thailand rolled out several tax-related measures to boost domestic EV demand, including exemption or reduction of import duty and excise tax and conditional subsidies for imported EVs.

Thailand, as a regional auto manufacturing hub, is the key force in driving the region towards the EV car transition, with the country accounting for almost 79% of all EVs sold in Southeast Asia in the first quarter of 2023. By 2023, Thailand aims to have EVs account for 30% of its annual car production of 2.5 million vehicles. To support this goal, infrastructures integrated with smart supply-demand management should be in place to enable the transition towards decarbonizing the transport industry.

BayWa r.e. Solar Trade has been promoting sustainability through its best-in-class products and services with logistics, warehousing and technical capabilities, and consulting for its growing regional customer base. By having EV chargers as part of the distribution portfolio, alongside other solar products such as solar inverters, solar-charged batteries, solar modules and other solar solutions, Solar Trade aims to encourage the faster adoption of electric vehicles. The addition to the portfolio attempts to decrease the reliance on conventional energy sources and grid power, thereby ensuring a greener and more sustainable future for generations to come.

Expressing their enthusiasm for the collaboration, Logan Yu, President of Huawei Digital Power Thailand, commented, “BayWa r.e., with its global footprint, has been successful in delivering Huawei technological advancements in the market. By adding our cutting-edge EV charging solutions to their product offering in Thailand, customers will now have even more access to this technology, driving a positive change in Thailand’s energy landscape and contributing to Thailand’s broader mission of achieving a carbon-neutral future.”

BayWa r.e. Solar Trade established its Southeast Asia presence in Thailand in 2017 and expanded to the Philippines in 2019 before further forays into Vietnam and Malaysia in the following years. They recently celebrated cumulative sales of 1 Gigawatt in Thailand for 2023.
