Themed “The Origin of Life”, the competition was divided into the Open Group and Student Group. Hong Kong design talents were encouraged to create and craft enthralling jewellery pieces based on culture, upbringing and life experiences. This year’s competition received nearly 100 entries. The winners were chosen by a panel of seven judges based on four criteria – creativity and innovation, aesthetics, craftsmanship and wearability, topic relevance and marketability (for the Open Group only). Winning pieces will be displayed at the Hall 1E Concourse during fair period, allowing jewellery buyers and exhibitors to appreciate the creativity in Hong Kong’s original designs.

Open Group brims with original ideas and exquisite designs
Three Best of Show Awards were given out in the Open Category. Tang Yuk Ying clinched the award with her pendant/brooch design Dandelion. The Power of Life. Using a rotating corolla adorned with green garnets, the designer vividly portraits the perseverance and bravery of the dandelion as its seeds ride the wind into the unknown and adversity, it can always take root, survive and thrive.

Another Best of Show Award winner was Law Tsz Wan. His design, Rice, pays homage to Yuan Longping, the “father of hybrid rice”. The gold-green pendant/brooch illustrates the sparkling vibrance of a rice stalks and emblems Mr Yuan’s invention and his contributions to mankind.

Xu Qihua and her bracelet/necklace design Ocean of Life took home the third Best of Show Award. The design originates from a Greek myth about dolphins guarding oceans. Depicting dolphins darting between waves, the designer urges the wearer to help protect the water resources, ocean and life.

Student Group exudes boundless creativity
To inspire more young design talents to join the jewellery design profession, the competition includes a Student Group, open to students from Hong Kong’s registered schools. Mak Tin Long from the VTC Youth College, championed the Group with the pendant/brooch design Life – Cybercity. Its manufacturing company Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group Master Studio won Craftsmanship & Technology Award. The design comprises of water molecules, tree roots, tree trunks and skyscrapers made of silver, enamel, topaz and zircon stones projecting a city built on water and Earth’s mineral resources, illustrating the importance of harmony between urban development and the nature.

The Student Group’s First Runner-up went to Lee Kwan Ho of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. His men’s jewellery series The Beetles was inspired by the World Tree, a mythical tree of life. The design features three rhino beetles living in the world tree with a lifespan of only one year, urging humans to experience and cherish life despite the transience of time, life and youth.

The Second Runner-up of the Student Group was Leung Kwok Yee from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Her Taoist-inspired ring design The Creation of Entirety uses different materials to represent different elements of life: Pink and green tourmalines represent “yin” and “yang”; cabochon sapphire means the growth of different species; and the five elements are illustrated by white crystals, interlocking coin shapes (water) on the ring shank, cabochon sapphires on branches (soil and wood) and a burning fire shape in the middle.

Jewellery twin shows burnish Hong Kong image

  • Global firms are back as more than 2,300 exhibitors join events

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government (HKSAR) has removed restrictions on travel between Hong Kong and Mainland China and lifted vaccination requirements for overseas visitors to the city. The moves will boost global trade between Hong Kong, Mainland China and the world at large. The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) has been actively promoting the territory’s advantages through different channels and exhibitions. The 39th Hong Kong International Jewellery Show and 9th HKTDC Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show, organised by the HKTDC, will be staged at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) from 1-5 March 2023, as a launch pad for a new round of trade fairs to help Hong Kong companies capture global business opportunities.

Sophia Chong (centre), HKTDC Deputy Executive Director, Lawrence Ma (L), Chairman, HKTDC Hong Kong International Jewellery Show and HKTDC Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show Fair Organising Committee, and Winston Chow, Chairman, HKTDC Jewellery Advisory Committee, attended today’s (16 February) press conference to introduce the twin jewellery shows.

Sophia Chong, Deputy Executive Director of the HKTDC, said: “We are happy to see positive feedback from international and mainland business communities on the relaxation of the pandemic prevention policies in Hong Kong. We observed a gradual return of overseas and mainland participants in exhibitions and conference held in January. This year, the twin jewellery shows are attracting more than 2,300 exhibitors from 34 countries and regions, with half of them from overseas. The fairs will draw 100 buying missions with more than 10,000 non-local buyers from 70 countries and regions, showing significant increase in both non-local exhibitors and buyers compared to last year. We believe the exhibition industry and international trade will benefit directly from full relaxation of quarantine measures later this year.”

The HKTDC will focus on two key aspects – markets and sectors – to promote Hong Kong as a business hub and help trade regain momentum. The HKTDC will focus on promoting Hong Kong as the preeminent two-way bridge between the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN); between Asia and the world. Apart from GBA, Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) countries, traditional and emerging markets remain our regional focus for promotion. Apart from facilitating trade and exports of various industry sectors, the HKTDC will also reinforce Hong Kong’s leading role in innovation & technology, health & wellness and sustainability.

Hong Kong fine jewellery exports rally
After the pandemic brought a 20% decline in 2020, Hong Kong’s fine jewellery exports benefited significantly from relaxed quarantine measures. The value of Hong Kong’s fine jewellery exports last year rose 18% to HK$71.4 billion (US$9.1 billion), as compared to 2019. While there was a 40% growth in Hong Kong’s jewellery sales to ASEAN markets, the exports to the United Arab Emirates, Italy, Australia and Taiwan also showed an encouraging increase.

Group pavilions include Mainland China, Japan, Korea and Germany
The twin shows will feature 20 group pavilions including those from Mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, India, Turkiye, Israel, Germany, Italy, Belgium, Brazil, Colombia, the United States and others. A number of jewellery associations will return to the fairs and show support, such as the Asia Pacific Creator Association, International Coloured Gems Association, Tanzanite Foundation, and the Hong Kong Jewellery & Jade Manufacturers Association which organises T-GOLD+METS pavilion with Italian Exhibition Group and many more. The overwhelming response proves Hong Kong is an attractive platform for international companies.

Highlighted zones present exquisite jewellery
The Hong Kong International Jewellery Show will feature 17 zones. Amongst all, the Hall of Fame will gather 18 jewellery brands, including Hong Kong’s ASIAN STAR, Spain’s CARRERA Y CARRERA, Italy’s Oriental Jewels and Thailand’s Key Gems; Hall of Extraordinary will showcase masterpieces from about 60 exhibitors, such as Dehres, United Jewelry, On Tung Company, and Continental Diamond from Hong Kong, Switzerland’s Thomas Faerber SA, DIACRAFT Inc from the US, Germany’s Heinz Mayer, and Italy’s Crivelli s.r.l.; Designer Galleria will feature precious pieces from 25 jewellery designers from across the world. Participating designer brands include Green G, Starlite Jewellery and CULTURED from Hong Kong, Korea’s Gina Fine Jewelry Creator, Taiwan’s Dian-Ta Design Studio and more.

The Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show consists of three product zones, including Hall of Fine Diamond, Treasures of Nature and Treasures of Ocean showcasing premium quality diamonds, gemstones and pearls.

Over 20 inspiring events help businesses stay up-to-date
The twin jewellery shows will organise over 20 seminars and events covering various topics such as Bling Up Your Business with Blockchain & NFT, Hong Kong Jewellery Industry Shines over the World, THE JEWELLERY TRENDBOOK 2024+ ‘From Consumer Culture to New Market Opportunities’, Jewellery Enamelling: The Techniques, Introduction of ‘Dealers in Precious Metals and Stones’ Registration Regime, Ammolite – A 71 Million-Year Natural Treasure only from Alberta, Canada, Achieving SDG of Jewellery Testing and Certification Industry through Innovative Integration of Industry, Education, Research and Application. These seminars and events will allow industry players to stay up-to-date and explore further business opportunities. There will also be various networking events and jewellery parades during the shows. In addition, the winning pieces of the 24th Hong Kong Jewellery Design Competition will be displayed during the fair period.

The shows will run under the EXHIBITION+ physical-online hybrid model, which includes HKTDC-organised physical fairs, the smart business-matching platform Click2Match, online-to-offline seminars under the Intelligence Hub and the hktdc.com sourcing platform. This extends face-to-face interactions from physical exhibitions to an online, smart business-matching platform to help enterprises proactively connect with business partners. The Click2Match platform for the two fairs will be accessible from 1-12 March 2023, letting exhibitors and buyers continue conducting business discussions online after the physical shows.

Hong Kong and UAE explore collaboration opportunities

  • Focus on finance, technology and sustainability

A delegation of business leaders from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), led by the city’s Chief Executive and principal officials and organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), is in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) this week to strengthen existing business ties and develop new areas of collaboration in technology, sustainability and smart city development, in addition to traditional sectors of finance and trade.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between HKTDC and Dubai Chambers.
Panel speakers discussed the opportunities for deeper UAE-Hong Kong collaboration at the business forum before a dinner for the Dubai and Hong Kong business communities.

With Hong Kong’s unrivalled access to China and Asia and the UAE’s role as a gateway to the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and European markets, the relationship between the two commercial centres is already providing important benefits to a range of businesses.

The arrival of the high-level business delegation, which comprises senior executives from Hong Kong’s financial institutions, financial regulators as well as major players in innovation and technology (I&T), sustainability and smart city solutions, will help accelerate the commercial ties between the HKSAR and the Emirates, and support the strategic development of the UAE, Hong Kong and mainland China.

The important strategic relationships, which exist between China and the UAE, are based on a shared backing for liberal trade policies, investment in cutting-edge technology, low tax regimes and backing for pro-business regulation.

A press conference was held on 8 February in Dubai, followed by a business forum and dinner in the presence of H.E. Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of State for Foreign Trade, H.E. Mr Abdul-Aziz Abdulla Al Ghurair, Chairman of Dubai Chambers and H.E. Sultan Bin Sulayem, Chairman of Dubai International Chambers.

Hong Kong’s Chief Executive Mr John Lee said: “The UAE is Hong Kong’s largest trading partner in the Middle East region. We treasure this long-standing relationship, and I believe that we can now take it to a higher level. That’s why I’m here, together with these business leaders from Hong Kong – some 30 strong – to tell you that our business and investment doors are wide open and welcoming for UAE companies and investors. For a world of opportunities.”

“The commercial and political ties between Hong Kong and the UAE are growing ever stronger. It is clear we both approach business in the same way, backing innovation, investing in technology and looking for sustainable solutions. This business mission to the UAE shows the depth of existing commercial relationships and the potential to do a lot more.”

In response, H.E. Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al-Zeyoudi stressed the strength and durability of the strategic relations between the United Arab Emirates and the People’s Republic of China, which are witnessing continuous development, especially in the areas of economics and trade. The forward-looking and visionary leadership of the two countries is building a strong partnership, opening up new opportunities and broadening bilateral economic cooperation.

His Excellency added: “Strengthening investment and trade partnerships with Hong Kong supports the strategic cooperation between the UAE and China and contributes to opening new business fields, stimulating communication between the Emirati-Chinese business communities, especially in light of new economic opportunities”.

His Excellency continued: “The value of foreign trade between the UAE and Hong Kong amounted to about AED32 billion (US$8.7 billion) during the first 9 months of 2022, achieving a growth of 36% compared to the same period in 2021, while Hong Kong was among the top 10 trading partners for the UAE during 2021, with a contribution of more than 2% of the UAE’s total non-oil trade.”

His Excellency indicated that the forum represents an important step in supporting increased trade and enhancing prospects for bilateral cooperation in a wide range of sectors, especially shipping, logistics, the service sector and air transport. It maximises benefits for Emirati companies and their counterparts in Hong Kong.

HKTDC Chairman Dr Peter K N Lam mentioned in his opening remarks that “Dubai and Hong Kong are natural partners, when it comes to creating business opportunities. The signing of three MoUs* at our event tonight shows the tremendous potential for deeper collaboration. Creating business opportunities has been the work of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council for over 55 years, and I am pleased to be part of these exciting times.”

Representing the business community in Dubai, H.E. Abdul-Aziz Abdulla Al Ghurair, Chairman of Dubai Chambers, commented: “I am proud to say that the UAE is the largest trading partner for Hong Kong in the Middle East. Non-oil trade between the UAE and Hong Kong reached AED22.2 billion in the first half of 2022, registering 16.2% growth compared to the first half of 2021. With the presence of our new international office in Hong Kong, I look forward to seeing continued collaboration with our Hong Kong counterparts and seeing the relationship between our countries thrive and prosper even more.”

In the trade delegation, Chief Executive Mr Lee is joined by three principal officials: Deputy Secretary of Justice Mr Horace Cheung, Secretary for Financial Services and Treasury Mr Christopher Hui and Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Mr Algernon Yau.

Other business leaders from Hong Kong and the Emirates also exchanged views at a panel discussion yesterday. Chaired by Mr Yau, panel speakers included Mr Nicolas Aguzin, Chief Executive Officer of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Ltd, Dr Sunny Chai, Chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries and Chairman of the Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP), Mr Horace Cheung, and H.E. Hussain Al Mahmoudi, Chief Executive Officer of Sharjah Research Technology & Innovation Park (SRTIP) and H.E. Faisal Juma Khalfan Belhoul, Vice Chairman of Dubai International Chamber.

HKTDC: Hong Kong ready for business; Delegation arrives in Riyadh

  • 30-strong Delegation to explore opportunities with govt. and business community of Saudi Arabia
  • HK’s strengths in finance, technology, sustainability to facilitate Kingdom’s strategic development
  • Six MoU signed at Investment Forum officiated by Saudi Investment Minister H.E. Khalid A Alfalih

A delegation of business leaders from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), led by the city’s Chief Executive Mr John Lee and principal government officials, has arrived in Riyadh to explore collaboration opportunities with the business community of Saudi Arabia.

Several Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) were signed at the Investment Forum yesterday. These include Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) and Saudi Tadawul Group Holding Company.
The delegation paid a visit to THE LINE Experience exhibition to learn about the innovative urban designs of the futuristic city NEOM.

Over the past two days, the delegation discussed with Saudi government and industry leaders how Hong Kong can facilitate the Kingdom’s strategic development via its role as a global financial hub and China’s international gateway. The 30-strong delegation includes senior executives from Hong Kong’s financial institutions and regulator as well as major players in innovation and technology (I&T), sustainability and smart city solutions. Riyadh is the first of three stops on this week-long mission to the Middle East, organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council.

At a press conference followed by an Investment Forum and dinner officiated by the Saudi Minister of Investment H.E. Khalid Al-Falih and attended by some 300 Saudi Arabian guests yesterday, Chief Executive Mr John Lee, said, “Saudi Arabia is a strong economy of the Gulf region and a growing source of foreign direct investment. Driven by Vision 2030, the dynamic blueprint for the future, Saudi Arabia is destined to take its place as an economic powerhouse built on diversity, sustainability, and innovation and technology. Hong Kong has long been the Asia-Pacific region’s multi-level bridge for foreign and Mainland Chinese businesses and investors. As integration with the Mainland continues to deepen, so too do opportunities for Hong Kong, and the economies and companies that work with Hong Kong.”

Mr Lee was joined by Deputy Secretary of Justice Mr Horace Cheung, Secretary for Financial Services and Treasury Mr Christopher Hui, and Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Mr Algernon Yau. Other business leaders from Hong Kong and Saudi Arabia also exchanged views at the investment forum yesterday.

At the forum, H.E. Khalid A Alfalih said: “This visit comes on the heels of numerous historic visits between our two countries starting with the visit of President Xi in 2016 following which the ties between the two countries deepened. Through this collaboration we aim at further developing various sectors whether it be asset management, private equity, wealth management – or in fintech, which saw an exponential growth of 79 per cent between 2021 and 2022.”

He added:” Saudi Arabia has the largest regulated capital markets in the region, with the largest stock exchange in the MENA region. Due to evolving trends we are also making efforts to strengthen global supply chains and have launched a dedicated global supply chain resilience initiative. This will be a great opportunity for China and Hong Kong-based companies to use the KSA as a platform for adding value to products customised for the Middle East region and beyond.”

We are pleased to organise this delegation to come and discuss collaboration opportunities, not only in our traditional sectors of finance and trade, but also in new areas in tech and innovation, smart city and sustainability solutions. Creating opportunities has been the work of the HKTDC for over 55 years, and I am hopeful that we can continue to help Hong Kong businesses play a part in the exciting growth of Saudi Arabia and the regional overall.”

22nd Hong Kong Eyewear Design Competition Winners Announced

  • Winning entries inspired by Avant Garde theme

With this year’s Avant Garde theme, the 22nd Hong Kong Eyewear Design Competition’s winning pieces reflected the creativity, acute sense of style and boundless imagination of local designers. The competition aims to encourage innovation and enhance the design quality of Hong Kong eyewear products, identify new talents and promote Hong Kong’s creative products to international markets.

The 22nd Hong Kong Eyewear Design Competition Award Presentation Ceremony was held on 13 January
“Survival Next” – Champion of the Open Group and Made-to-Sell Award

The award presentation held on 13 January was organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) and the Hong Kong Optical Manufacturers Association, with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Hong Kong Design Institute as co-organisers.

The competition was divided into two categories: the Open Group and Student Group. The judging panel made up of experts in different disciplines evaluated the entries based on (1) product design, (2) practicability and functionality, (3) product description, (4) marketability and (5) presentation.

Winning pieces represent local innovation
Survival Next designed by Lai Pui Yan, BOBO from OKIA Optical Co. Ltd came top of the Open Group and received the Made-to-Sell Award. Her eyewear design was inspired by the gear NFT video game characters use for survival. The product allows wearers to travel between the virtual and real worlds.

Representing Sun Hing Vision Group Holdings Limited, Leung Ngai Ming’s Turning was the first runner-up of the Open Group with his futuristic folding sunglasses. With a 360-degree hinge, the eyewear can be changed into four forms, namely sunglasses, optical glasses, folding glasses and butterfly shapes.

The Open Group’s second runner-up Chim Pui Ho & Lam Long Him’s Time Traveler incorporated the concept of time travel into their design. The eyewear’s left side represents the past through the use of traditional materials and techniques, while the right highlighted the future with a bolder appearance and colour tone, a perfect fusion of the past and future.

Discovering design talents of tomorrow
For the Student Group, Yip Tsz Yan of the School for Higher and Professional Education, took first place with her Parallel Universe design. The eyewear’s intricate geometric and parallelism design represent the intersection between life and infinity.

Osseon designed by Wong Zhen Jie, Lionel of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, was first runner-up of the Student Group. The design’s surface undulations blur the boundaries between the exterior and interior. It can be produced by 3D printing, with tough but flexible PA12 nylon. It can be dyed in different colours to accentuate wearers’ individual taste.

The Student Group’s second runner-up was Lau Chi Sum of Youth College International. Titled Infinity, the design is composed of two semi-reflective lenses and a customisable layer of glowing powder between them. It appears to have an infinite depth with mutable colours and patterns, which can be customised for individual wearers.

The Creativity Award was presented to Law Hoi Shan, Jamela. Her Morphogenesis design encourages viewers to embrace transhuman aesthetics and envision humanity’s evolution. Apart from correcting myopia, hyperopia and presbyopia, the multi-purpose accessory allows wearers to use different lenses to access diverse features, such as magnification, light polarisation and colour enhancement. By looking through different lenses, wearers are encouraged to look at the world through different eyes.

Apart from trophies, cash prizes and certificates, the winning works will be publicised on the website of the 31st Hong Kong International Optical Fair as well as the website and annual journal of the Hong Kong Optical Manufacturers Association. The winning pieces have the opportunity to be on display at international optical events.

Hong Kong International Optical Fair helps create opportunities
The 31st Hong Kong International Optical Fair will take place from 8 to 10 November 2023 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC), while the online exhibition will run from 8 to 17 November 2023.

Meanwhile, the HKTDC has arranged select exhibitors and buyers to try out the Click2Match smart business matching platform and meet online from 9 to 11 January 2023. • Enthusiastic industry response to capture new opportunities following border reopening

The latest trade fairs organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) recorded encouraging traffic and exhibitor participation, with many buyers placing orders at the fairground. The recent reopening of the Hong Kong-Mainland China border and resumption of international travel has helped drive the industry’s enthusiastic response, allowing buyers and exhibitors to seize opportunities.

The HKTDC Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair, the HKTDC Hong Kong Baby Products Fair, and the Hong Kong International Stationery & School Supplies Fair, jointly organised by the HKTDC and Messe Frankfurt (HK) Ltd concluded successfully.
More than 120 renowned brands were featured at the Brand Name Gallery at the Toys & Games Fair and Baby Products Fair, including 4D Master, Eastcolight, Hape, KEEPPLEY, Ming the Minibus, Welly, Winfun, Marcus & Marcus and more.
Smart-Tech Toys and Kidult World were highlighted product zones at the Toys & Games Fair, attracting the attention of many buyers.

Across four days, the 49th HKTDC Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair, 14th HKTDC Hong Kong Baby Products Fair and the 21st Hong Kong International Stationery & School Supplies Fair welcomed over 21,000 buyers from some 100 countries and regions who participated physically and online. More than 12,200 buyers attended the three fairs in-person.

Non-local buyers travelled from near and far to join the physical fairs, including Mainland China, ASEAN, India, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. European buyers came from, amongst others, the Czech Republic, France, Hungary, Italy, Poland and the United Kingdom, while buyers from the Middle East and Brazil, Chile and the United States took part as well.

While the physical part of the three fairs came to a close today, exhibitors and buyers can continue to connect online until 19 January. The first three trade fairs of the year adopted the HKTDC’s new EXHIBITION+ model, which includes not only the physical shows, but also virtual access facilitated by its smart business matching platform Click2Match, connecting exhibitors and buyers online. As of today, the HKTDC has arranged over 1,000 business meeting sessions.

HKTDC Deputy Executive Director Ms Sophia Chong said: “The HKTDC has promoted the fairs in the past few months, and actively invited quality exhibitors and buyers from around the world to participate in-person. Following the resumption of quarantine-free travel between the mainland and Hong Kong, we are happy to see buyers from Mainland China, ASEAN and the wider Asia region, Europe and the Americas travel to Hong Kong for the fairs. Business travel in Hong Kong is gradually returning to normal, with industry being more optimistic about the future. This is welcome news for our upcoming fairs.”

Creating more global business opportunities with the border re-opening
This year’s fairs featured an assortment of new products from more than 1,000 exhibitors. A long-term supporter of the Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair, Eastcolight (Hong Kong) Limited, introduced their AR educational toys at the event. Co-founder Ms Salley Sze said: “It is exciting to see that global buyers are back in Hong Kong this year. We have met with overseas buyers from Brazil, France, Israel, Italy, Russia and Turkey who are very interested in our products. We are confident in the fair’s business results.”

Xiamen Baby Pretty Products Co., Ltd has been participating in the Hong Kong Baby Products Fair since 2009, which has helped expand their export business over the years. CEO Mr Sam Yang appreciated the quality of buyers this year and revealed that his company has met with 80 to 90 new buyers from Southeast Asia and Turkey. While their existing customers have confirmed US$2 million worth of orders, they have also received on-site orders worth US$200,000-300,000 from four new buyers.

Ms Malwina Jaworska, Acting Director of Product Development Department of 4Kraft Sp. z o.o., a baby products company in Poland, said: “Through the HKTDC’s Click2Match smart business matching platform, we have found a new supplier from Hong Kong who can provide quality strollers with nice designs. We plan to buy US$850,000 worth of strollers from them. We have also reserved a budget of US$7 million for buying baby beds and high chairs at the fair.”

Sales manager Mr Scott Wen of Mirage International Industries, a US exhibitor at the Stationery & School Supplies Fair is satisfied with the fair results. “It’s clear that industry players are eager to get back to in-person business. We have had inquiries from Korea, Japan, the Netherlands, the USA, the Philippines, France, Germany, Hong Kong, and even the Middle East and India”.

Scientific educational, kidult and green toys lead the future of play
At the flagship Hong Kong Toy Industry Conference 2023 on 10 January, key toy industry trends were unveiled by speaker Mr Clifton Chiu, Research Analyst of Toys and Games of Euromonitor International.

He noted that the rise of scientific educational and kidult toys and the impact of sustainability will be in the spotlight. Mr Chiu added that scientific educational toys were a perfect product for families looking to mix education and entertainment for their children during the pandemic with limited outdoor activities and schooling. Also, kidults, mainly young professionals, are willing to spend their disposable income on collectible toys and blind boxes that let them relive their childhood.

Another key trend is sustainability, many big players have adapted manufacturing and packaging methods in accordance with the sustainability concerns of consumers. The Toys & Games Fair has various themed zones, such as Smart-Tech Toys and Kidult World, together with a special Green Toys label introduced this year, to help buyers identify and source the popular product categories in the industry. Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair opens today

  • The event presents specialty wines from vintners across the globe and business opportunities for industry players

Organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the 14th HKTDC Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair (Special Edition) opened today and will run for two days (10 and 11 January) at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). This year’s Wine & Spirits Fair is the HKTDC’s first wine event bringing tasting sessions back after a pause during the COVID-19 pandemic. The two-day physical fair is only open to industry buyers and business matching meetings will be set up onsite between buyers and exhibitors to deepen business relationships and open more prospects in the sector.

The 14th HKTDC Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair opened today and continues for two days (10 and 11 January) at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Local and international trade associations and government organisations participating in our fair with their own pavilions at the fairground, presenting a range of exquisite wines.
The first certified kosher Czech whisky is made with the best local ingredients and diluted with local spring water.

HKTDC Deputy Executive Director Sophia Chong said: “For the first time since its launch in 2008, the Wine & Spirits Fair is held in January to kick off the wine industry event season in 2023, offering plenty of opportunities for buyers and exhibitors to give their business a boost in the new year. The fair features more than 100 local and international exhibitors, showcasing their fine wine, liquor, baijiu, beer, sake and other alcoholic beverages from around the world, including Argentina, Australia, Mainland China, France, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Scotland and the United States. Local and international trade associations and government organisations participating in our fair with their own pavilions at the fairground, include the Hong Kong Wine and Spirits Association (HKWSA), Hong Kong General Chamber of Wine & Spirits (HKGCWS), Craft Beer Association of Hong Kong (CBAHK), Beverage and Food Community (BNFC), National Tax Agency Japan and Fukuoka Prefectural Government.”

According to the latest wine industry data from the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV), as of 2021, the mainland was the world’s seventh-largest wine consumer. Hong Kong started its zero-wine duty policy in 2008 and has since become the first free wine port among major economies, boosting wine imports. Hong Kong and the mainland also signed a cooperation agreement in 2010 to facilitate customs clearance for wine exported from Hong Kong to the mainland. Since November 2017, these measures have been extended to every port in the 42 mainland Customs Districts, further fortifying Hong Kong’s position as Asia’s wine trading and distribution hub. The value of Hong Kong’s wine exports for 2021 reached HK$1.595 billion (US$204 million), a 77% year-on-year rise. Most exports in Hong Kong are re-exports of imported wines, with Asia the major market. The mainland and Macao, which together accounted for nearly 66% of 2021 exports, are the major destinations for Hong Kong. In addition, Hong Kong is the third-largest sake export market after the US and mainland.
