Over Three Quarters of Consumers Believe the Gifting Season Leads to ‘Wasteful Behaviour’ – Eviosys’ Survey Highlights Consumer Shift Towards Sustainable Packaging

  • 87% of people think the gifting season leads to wasteful behaviour. More than half of Europeans think that cost of living is their biggest concern right now. 59% are frustrated or angry about the amount of plastic in supermarkets. 57% would pay more for a product packaged sustainably. 94% of consumers reuse or repurpose metal gift tins.

For the second year, metal packaging giant Eviosys has commissioned a Europe-wide survey of consumers’ sentiment towards packaging. The European leader surveyed 2,000 consumers in the UK, France, Germany, and Spain to get the latest information on priorities in this time of economic uncertainty, especially during the festive season.

Products generated from trend insights

The survey’s compelling data underlines the increasing importance consumers place on packaging when making purchasing decisions. Notably, 87% of people think that the gifting season leads to wasteful behaviour, and 48% of respondents acknowledge that they often consider packaging materials when shopping, highlighting a heightened awareness of the environmental impact of packaging materials.

The frustration with the prevalence of plastic in supermarkets is palpable, with 59% expressing discontent. This translates into tangible action, as 57% of consumers said they would pay more for products in sustainable packaging. Notably, 63% of respondents perceive metal as a more sustainable option than plastic. This continued mindset shift towards metal means the industry has an opportunity to capitalise and make a positive change to the market.

The survey also highlights the strong appeal of metal packaging, particularly its infinitely recyclable nature. 82% of respondents said that they would be more likely to purchase a product in metal packaging, given its recyclability.

As environmental concerns continue to rise, 66% of respondents feel that companies are not doing enough to tackle plastic pollution. In contrast, 61% view companies adopting metal packaging as taking a crucial sustainability step. With more than half of Europeans citing cost of living as their primary concern (56%), 78% acknowledge that cost would influence their decision to purchase a gift item.

In the realm of gifting, 48% of consumers express that the ability to reuse or refill the product influences their decisions, even outweighing considerations of luxury or design. 94% of respondents already reuse their gift tins, with popular choices including storing decorations (51%), storing food (47%), storing jewellery (38%), and as a base for DIY projects (26%).

While glass remains an essential element for premium packaging for 42% of respondents, metal closely follows at 38% highlighting that it’s a strong preference for consumers around the festive season.

Laetitia Durafour, Marketing Director, Eviosys said: “Eviosys stands firm in our mission to help brands address consumers’ expectations by spearheading sustainable, recyclable metal packaging solutions. We’re not merely witnessing a shift in consumer preferences; we’re actively shaping a future where responsible choices define our packaging landscape, reflecting the growing commitment toward a more eco-conscious society.”

Marrying Innovation and Sustainability: Eviosys Launches Revolutionary Metal Closure ‘Horizon’ Enabling Brands to Adopt Mono-Material Packaging

Eviosys debuts a brand-new ultra-light shallow metal overcap for tins – Horizon – at London Packaging Week 2023. The new metal lid is industry leading, offering the dry food sector an infinitely recyclable packaging solution for the whole can, previously dominated by plastic. Eviosys’ innovations continue to support brands to a more sustainable future.

The first of its kind, Horizon has the potential to make plastic overcaps a relic of the past. The new shallow metal overcaps are infinitely recyclable and ultra-lightweight, meaning fewer raw materials are needed, benefiting the environment. Horizon will provide a visually appealing and sustainable product whilst maintaining optimal product protection for dry storage cupboard essentials. Fully customisable, Horizon brings any dry product packed in metal cans a seamless look and feel and tins become easily stackable for maximum efficiency, creating more space in consumers’ homes.

According to Greenpeace1, The British Plastics Federation estimates that 46% of the UK’s plastic waste is incinerated, 19% is exported, and 17% ends up in landfill. Through Horizon, Eviosys is facilitating the removal of environmentally harmful single-use plastic, replacing it with 100% recyclable fully metal packaging.

In a recent consumer survey* by Eviosys, 81% of Europeans said they care about the environment, with 74% considering metal packaging more sustainable than plastic, yet this isn’t being reflected on supermarket shelves.

According to the Environmental Investigation Agency and Greenpeace2, total plastic packaging used by the UK’s biggest supermarkets rose from an estimated 886,000 tonnes in 2017 to 903,000 tonnes in 2018. With Horizon, Eviosys offers brands a product that will satisfy the growing environmentally conscious mindsets of end consumers.

Olivier Aubry, Chief Commercial Officer, at Eviosys said:

“Horizon is the latest example of Eviosys leading the packaging sector with action, not just rhetoric. Our continuous drive to create sustainable packaging solutions through innovation is providing our customers with cheaper, more effective and sustainable products.”

Horizon builds on Eviosys’ ambitious ESG program, Preserve Together, using innovation to drive progress and sustainability in the sector.

Eviosys will be exhibiting Horizon alongside a wider range of products at Stand G30 at this year’s London Packaging Week. Visit the stand to find out more.

*Survey commissioned by Eviosys and conducted by Focaldata in September 2022. Samples consisted of 500 participants from each of UK, France, Germany and Spain, making up a Europe-wide sample of 2,000 participants.

Eviosys Announces Further Investment in Spain and Portugal, Supporting Market Growth

Eviosys has invested EUR 8 million in expanding the capacity of production of two-piece cans in three factories: Alcochete (Portugal), Murcia and Ribadumia (Spain). The investment will support additional production, custom printing and expanded logistics capabilities at all the sites, supporting the demand Eviosys customers are seeing in the fish, meat and pet food markets.

Championing the Eviosys principle of global leader and local partner, the giant in the sustainable packaging industry has invested €8 million in expanding the capacity of production of two-piece cans in three factories: Alcochete (Portugal), Murcia and Ribadumia (Spain).

Eviosys Product An example of the products produced on Eviosys’ new lines in Spain and Portugal

The investment comes as the growing need for two-piece and EOE round and irregular cans in aluminum and steel in the fish, meat and pet food markets continues to increase. The fish market alone has grown in demand, +3.8% in 2022[1], highlighting the need for a reliable, sustainable, and local packaging manufacturer.

Working closely with partners in Spain and Portugal, Eviosys has seen these highly dynamic markets, rapidly change with consumer trends. As the leader in the canned fish segment, Eviosys has taken proactive steps to ensure businesses in the regions are able to access all of their packaging needs to respond to these trends, supplying end consumers.

To support the additional production capabilities of the factories, investment has been directed into custom printing and bolstered logistics support, meaning Eviosys customers can holistically grow their product production and delivery.

As Eviosys continues to grow in 2023, this investment reinforces its leadership in the Iberian Peninsula. The expanded capacity will allow Eviosys to continue delivering the best level of service to local customers. Investing in solutions to always provide customers with the best services and to ensure they can grow is at the core of Eviosys’ mission.

Tomás Lopez, Chief Executive Officer, Eviosys, said:

“Our investment in the region showcases our commitment to our core principle of being a global leader and local partner. In 2023 and beyond, we’ll continue to grow with our partners in the region, supporting them in what is a dynamic, fast-moving market, ensuring they can deliver for their customers.”

A Breakthrough in Metal Packaging: Eviosys Launches ‘Ecopeel’, a Revolutionary New Dual Product of Can and Peelable End

  • Eviosys has launched an industry-first, a food can with a sleek peelable foil directly sealed on the body of the can. Set to revolutionise the packaging industry and drive further adoption of metal packaging, Ecopeel(TM) will reduce the carbon footprint of canned food items by up to 20%. Ecopeel will help businesses achieve their sustainability objectives, driving the move away from plastic, and enhancing inclusivity, convenience, and branding opportunities for customers and end users.

International packaging giant Eviosys has revealed its latest innovation, Ecopeel. 200 years of expertise and innovation has produced an industry first: a processable food can with a sleek, peelable foil directly sealed on the can body.

Ecopeel has been designed with sustainability, convenience and inclusivity at its core. By replacing the traditional ring-pull with foil, Ecopeel is lighter and offers a 20% carbon reduction per can.

Ecopeel’s unique 45 sealing surface reduces the force necessary for opening, and the smooth body and 100% aperture capability reduces food waste. This supports Eviosys’ mission to make switching to metal accessible to all, building on the success of their other industry-leading products such as Orbit(TM).

Ecopeel reduces complexity for customers as cans are delivered with the foil already sealed, simply requiring brands to fill and seam the can. This makes the filling process 5x faster, as well as cleaner and safer, reducing spoilage and energy usage. It also offers greater customisation options with printing onto the can, so products stand out on the shelf.

Working in collaboration with longstanding customers, such as Jealsa and Friscos, Eviosys is also in discussions with other customers across Europe for the rollout of Ecopeel and expand the range to other sectors including pate, pet food, and olives.

Tomas Lopez, CEO at Eviosys, said: “At our core, we are committed to transforming the packaging sector through innovation to enable a truly circular economy. With Ecopeel we can offer our customers this transformed packaging experience, strengthening their sustainability and inclusivity credentials, expediting their internal processes and enhancing their brand visibility.”

Jesus Alsonso, CEO at Jealsa, said: “It is very important to us to work with partners who are innovators and can offer us more sustainable choices throughout our supply chain – including our packaging. Ecopeel sets a new standard for inclusive, accessible, sustainable, and innovative food packaging, and allows consumers to enjoy all of our high-quality products with ease.”

Eviosys Surpasses Emissions Goals and Leads the Industry in Pursuit of Net Zero

Global packaging giant Eviosys‘ latest ESG report details that, for the second year, the business has outperformed its ambitious goals for both CO2 and VOC emissions reductions, as well as being awarded EcoVadis Gold Certification, positioning it as a global powerhouse for sustainability.

ESG Report

Having reduced scope 1 and 2 emissions by more than 10% in 2022, Eviosys has drastically surpassed its annual reduction target of 3.1% per production of million normalised cans. This represents almost twice the impressive reduction detailed in the firm’s 2021 report, and puts Eviosys on track to achieve Net Zero by 2050. Eviosys has also reduced VOC emissions by 10% within a year, through the implementation of smart incinerators, monitoring protocols, and a conversion to water-based products.

Eviosys is now addressing its scope 3 emissions, becoming a signatory of the UN Global Compact and introducing a new supplier code of conduct. This will see Eviosys conduct an extensive review of the entire supply chain and attribute ratings to suppliers in order to promote improved sustainability throughout.

Other investments include equipment such as smart high-economy oxidizers to reduce CO2 emissions and new solar panels to deliver an impressive 19% energy saving at specific plants. For example, Eviosys’ Murcia plant will house one of the largest installations of its kind in Europe with 8,411 panels. Additionally, Eviosys continues to open new facilities positioned close to customers, such as its recent expansion into Thailand.

Eviosys also regularly innovates to create inclusive products that make metal packaging more accessible. These include Orbit(TM), a patented closure that improves opening for those with impaired mobility, and Braille cans, with micro-embossed features and QR codes to offer product details to the visually impaired.

Championing employee well-being, Eviosys continues to progress towards its total recordable incident rate (TRIR) goal of 0.8, implementing improved safety features, training sessions and health support for workers. Eviosys will be introducing a dedicated program and an assessment for the employment of workers with disabilities to ensure all employees are safe and able to thrive at work.

Laurent Leucio, EHS and Sustainability Director at Eviosys, said:

“This year’s ESG report shows our absolute dedication to sustainability. Achievements of this scale can only be accomplished by a holistic approach to reducing emissions, as Eviosys demonstrates by ensuring that we are committed and investing at each stage of production and operations to limit our environmental impact and help our customers do the same.”

Acting Globally, Thinking Locally: Eviosys Opens State-of-the-Art Plant in Thailand

Eviosys is expanding its presence into Asia, opening a state-of-the-art new plant in Thailand with high sustainability credentials. Eviosys Thailand will produce 85-gram, single-serve, drawn aluminium pet food cans, responding to the rapid growth of the wet pet food market in the region.

Global packaging giant Eviosys has today announced its expansion into Asia, opening a brand-new, state-of-the-art plant in Thailand. With this investment, Eviosys will bring its expertise and leadership to the region. As Eviosys looks to continue to grow in 2023, this new plant will serve as a benchmark for expanding into new markets.

The plant will feature state-of-the-art new eco-friendly equipment with reduced energy-use and will be fully powered by electricity – eliminating the need for gas – in line with Eviosys’ goal to reduce emissions by 20% by 2027. The aluminium used will be provided by a local supplier located less than 100km from the plant, further reducing the carbon footprint as well as supporting local employment. Eviosys will hire and develop local teams on site, contributing to its ambitious Preserve Together programme and the development of the region simultaneously. For Eviosys, sustainability expands beyond the circularity of its products. The business is keen to lead by example and support local communities around all of its plants globally.

Of the new expansion, Francois Querrioux, COO at Eviosys, said: “Whilst being a global player in the industry, Eviosys also seeks to maintain its roots at all times and support local communities in the regions we invest in. Our expansion into Thailand represents an exciting move into a new market. Sustainability remains the central focus of our operations, and the line of classic drawn-piece aluminium cans that will be produced here for the local market will advance progress towards our goal of being the first choice in innovative and sustainable packaging globally.”

Eviosys is offering infinitely recyclable metal packaging. The 85-gram, single-serve, drawn aluminium cans produced in the new plant will serve the local wet pet food category (a segment currently underserved with a 6% annual growth rate). Metal is a strong, durable material, with unbeatable shelf-life credentials which better protect and preserve brands’ products and our planet. The 85g format and the durability of metal will both help fight waste across the full supply chain all the way to the consumer’s cupboard.
