SPACES is a series of immersive exhibitions exploring the profound challenges and possibilities presented by computing technologies and their impact on humanity. The first edition at Phillips will feature a curation of contemporary artworks integrating digital techniques with tangible media, as well as digital works that challenge conventional perceptions of art, inviting viewers to reconsider the boundaries between the digital and physical realms.

Elio D’Anna, curator and co-founder of HOFA Gallery, says, “HOFA is honoured to present SPACES with Phillips. This series explores the evolving interplay between digital technology and contemporary art, showcasing how artists are integrating AI and digital techniques into their work.”

D’Anna adds, “SPACES highlights the transformative impact of these technologies on art forms and reveals new possibilities for creative expression.”

One of the main highlights of SPACES is Sougwen Chung, the Chinese-Canadian artist named as one of TIME100’s top AI innovators and whose human-machine collaboration was the first AI model acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

At Phillips, Chung will unveil Spectral, a dynamic new installation where a robotic arm will collaborate with them in the painting process, exemplifying the evolution of machines as creative partners rather than mere tools. This work explores the innovative interplay between humans and AI, and technology and artistic expression.

Other highlights include:

Krista Kim
Krista Kim, founder of Techism, is a pioneering artist who explores digital consciousness through art, technology and philosophy, working across both digital and physical mediums. As a cultural leader at the World Economic Forum since 2022, Vogue Singapore’s metaverse editor, and one of UNESCO’s ’50 Minds for the Next 50,’ Kim is widely recognised for her innovative contributions to the art world. Her notable works include the 2022 immersive installation Continuum in Times Square, and the 2024 installation Mirror of the Mind featured on The Sphere in Las Vegas.

SPACES will showcase a triptych of Kim’s signature gradient works, UV-printed on Trulife Plexi and mounted on Dibond. These pieces, created using digital software from as early as 2012, represent her vision of technology as a tool for mental wellness and cultural reflection. Her meditative gradients explore the fluid intersection of art and technology, symbolising constant transformation in the digital age.

Emily Xie
Xie is a New York-based artist known for her innovative use of algorithms to create lifelike textures and forms. Her work has been showcased at the Singapore ArtScience Museum and the Armory Show in New York. Inspired by traditional Chinese embroidery, Xie’s exhibited work Cresting Figure is a digital collage integrating rich textures and intricate patterns, reimagining ancient techniques through generative AI within a digital framework. Bridging the gap between contemporary art and 21st Century technology, it offers a beautiful perspective on cultural heritage.

Refik Anadol
Anadol is a Turkish-American media artist and director renowned for his innovative approach that blends art with data, creating captivating experiences through digital mediums. Anadol has collaborated with prestigious institutions such as MoMA New York and Sotheby’s and has digital collectible sales surpassing $30 million. SPACES will present Winds of Yawanawa #888, part of his Winds of Yawanawa collection. This series comprises 1,000 unique NFT Data Paintings that merge weather data from the Yawanawa tribe’s Amazonian village with the artistic expressions of young Yawanawa artists, showcasing a dynamic interplay between traditional art forms and digital innovation.

Miety Heiden, Deputy Chairwoman and Head of Private Sales at Phillips, says “Phillips is thrilled to collaborate with HOFA Gallery on SPACES, an exhibition that pushes the boundaries of contemporary art by exploring the intersection of digital innovation and creative expression. SPACES reflects our commitment to supporting artists whose practice comprises cutting-edge technologies.”

Scorpios’ Summer Cultural Series Redefines AI & Visual Art in Mykonos & Bodrum

Scorpios, the renowned beach concept and creative gathering place, in partnership with art tech pioneers HOFA Gallery, announces ‘Evolving Perspectives,’ the second edition of their Encounters summer arts programme. Running from July 18 to September 18, this 9-week series expands to take place across Scorpios’ two stunning beachfront locations, Mykonos and the newly opened Bodrum. Featuring immersive installations and live music performances, the programme will showcase AI and visual artists, headlined by Joseph Klibansky, Random International, and Sougwen Chung – all revered for pushing the boundaries of art and technology.

Tree of Life, Joseph Klibansky

Building on the success of 2023’s inaugural edition launched with Turkish AI artist and director Refik Anadol, his special collaboration with the Yawanawa Indigenous communities of Brazil’s Amazon was regarded as a profound exploration of the relationship between human consciousness and nature. Over half a million people attended last year’s programme, generating $3 million in artwork sales, with Refik Anadol’s Yawanawa heritage project alone selling out in hours and raising $1.5 million for the preservation campaign.

HOFA Co-founder Elio D’Anna says: “The 2023 season of Encounters was a groundbreaking and very successful programme that brought together AI and digital artists, musicians, and an audience of global changemakers and creatives through a series of live performances and installations.

“This year’s ‘Evolving Perspectives’ programme continues to push boundaries, making it the most exciting synchronisation of visual art and cultural engagement, while also delivering a very powerful message on the power of AI and human-machine collaboration to help us achieve a more harmonious coexistence with nature.”

The Mykonos lineup headlines Dutch contemporary artist Joseph Klibansky from July 18-21, 2024. Celebrated for his innovative use of technology in art and sculpture, he will present ‘Tree of Life’ merging digital art with environmental stewardship. This collection creates a unified visual narrative rich in depth and storytelling, featuring intricate patterns and vibrant colours inspired by nature. The new ‘Tree of Life’ collection includes a large-scale video sculpture installation to be exhibited at Scorpios Mykonos, along with 1,000 unique digitally painted fine art prints with a matching digital companion. Each artwork boasts its own unique traits, ensuring every piece is one-of-a-kind.

Moreover, Klibansky combines visual art with environmental awareness. For every artwork sold, the partnering non-profit One Tree Planted will plant physical trees in the Amazon.

In Bodrum between August 22-25, 2024, the art group Random International, a German duo with studios in London and Stockholm, will present an immersive installation that invites visitors to engage physically with a seemingly sentient, digital swarm. Titled ‘When Tomorrow Comes,’ the work features a custom tracking system and flocking algorithm to create an interactive digital sculpture blending technology with human perception and interaction. Three sets of 150 limited signed edition prints of ‘When Tomorrow Comes’ will be available for purchase.

A global name in human-machine collaboration, and multi-award-winning Chinese-Canadian artist Sougwen Chung will perform a live showcase with the robotic system D.O.U.G. (Drawing Operations Unit Generation at Scorpios Bodrum between September 5-8, 2024. Chung’s innovative approach to combining human artistry with AI technology has earned them international acclaim, including a spot on TIME Magazine’s TIME100 AI list as one of the world’s most influential people in AI and the TIME Impact Award 2024.

Accompanying the performance will be the debut of ‘Genesis II: Body Machine,’ a collection of unique artworks. The works in ‘Body Machine’ speculate on the future of the robotic form intertwined with the human body. Each bespoke work is generated from the artist’s drawing choreography captured in three dimensions and paired with exclusive signed prints.

All prints and digital artworks will be available for purchase through Scorpios Collect.

The headline artist events are also supported by a programme of featured AI and visual artists, encompassing music into these collaborative events, they will take place throughout the 2024 summer season in both Mykonos and Bodrum.

HOFA Returns to Art Central 2024 With Eight Exceptional International Artists

HOFA Gallery returns to Art Central Hong Kong from 28 to 31 of March 2024, eager to captivate audiences at Booth B11 with a showcase titled ‘Abstract Actuality’. Presenting the works of eight internationally renowned artists, exhibiting Ilhwa Kim, Jan Kaláb, Mary Ronayne, Hannes Schauer, Alejandro Monge, Li Jie, Breakfast and Sougwen Chung, that intentionally play with the realms of reality.

Alejandro Monge, I.S., 2024, Fiberglass, Concrete and Pigments, 40 × 25 × 20 cm
Alejandro Monge, I.S., 2024, Fiberglass, Concrete and Pigments, 40 × 25 × 20 cm

Elio D’Anna, co-founder of HOFA, elaborates by stating, “Art Central is renowned for pushing the boundaries of contemporary art since its inception and HOFA is proud to exhibit alongside Asia’s most innovative galleries alongside distinguished artists from around the world.”

For 2024’s edition of Art Central, HOFA, the renowned contemporary London gallery, presents a captivating array of eclectic contemporary subjects, accentuating the profound connections engendered by explorations of mind, matter and nature intertwined, challenging the aspects of abstract vs actuality.

Ilhwa Kim’s artworks showcase the mastery of patience, guiding viewers into a contemplative state. Her commanding perspective deftly manipulates precision, depth, and space, evoking elusive imagery that invites interpretation through the lens of each individual’s perspective.

As a multidisciplinary artist, Jan Kalab’s work reflects a conflicting spectrum, oscillating between the spontaneity of graffiti and controlled geometric forms. His method is essentially a documentation of experimenting with a repertoire of medium, motion, and variation.

Mary Ronayne’s artistry is marked by her remarkable skill with fluid enamel, capturing the dynamic energy and movement of her subjects with immediacy. Through her figurative yet abstract compositions, she achieves a captivating aesthetic that radiates playfulness, in delightful contrast to the meticulous control she maintains over the narrative.

Regarded as a refuge from the world’s noise, Hannes Schauer’s art serves as a space for quiet contemplation, akin to communing with nature. His highly embodied and intuitive process involves laying the canvas on the floor and expressively splashing it with highly diluted ink and acrylic paint, shaping its precipitation and atmospheric turbulence in a spiritual ritual.

Alejandro Monge’s portraits defy the confines of flat canvases, reaching beyond the visual limits of two-dimensional art. His works, influenced by Caravaggio’s chiaroscuro and the mastery of John Singer Sargent, possess a sculptural quality that pushes against the boundaries of traditional space. Monge’s painted elements exhibit a hyperrealistic allure reminiscent of photography, skilfully deceiving the vision of the observer.

Establishing himself as a dedicated researcher in the field of oil painting, Li Jie actively portrays his commitment to continuous artistic growth. His unique perspective and aesthetic insights propels his experimentation with depth, layering and structure that defy the boundaries of two dimensional works. This duality of environment and experience has undoubtedly influenced his artistic vision, creating a compelling and diverse body of work that captivates art enthusiasts worldwide.

Breakfast pushes the boundaries of computer-driven kinetic art to generate an emotionally impactful aesthetic. At the heart of their work is a commitment to developing advanced artworks that seamlessly integrate deep concepts, software, and hardware. These pieces not only offer interactive experiences that bridge distances, but also narrate the profound stories shaping our rapidly transforming world.

Exploring the frontiers of human-machine connection, Sougwen Chung is a prominent artist and researcher, renowned for groundbreaking work in the realm of human-machine collaboration. Chung’s artistic endeavours transcend conventional boundaries, showcasing the intricate interplay between the mark-made-by-hand and the mark-made-by-machine.

The Chinese-Canadian artist and artistic director of London-based studio, Scilicet, is renowned for their visionary and speculative practice exploring human-AI collaboration. Sougwen Chung’s forthcoming 2-week show is centred on the idea of hybridity as a relational approach which resolves adversarial perceptions of AI through balance, openness, and imagination.

The artist will also offer some of their works as collectible NFTs.

Reflecting on the potential impact of their upcoming show, Sougwen Chung says, “Relational Gestures will showcase a body of artefacts and new works that result from a hybrid process, encouraging the viewer to look beyond screens and flat interfaces to imagine the possible sensory mixes of the future. Through the work, I am thinking deeply about how the human hand, how human creative capabilities, might evolve as a direct result of the possibilities afforded by embodied AI.”

The 2023 TIME100 AI list features leaders, policymakers, artists and entrepreneurs who are advancing major conversations about how AI is reshaping the world, and Sougwen Chung earned a prized place as an ‘Innovator’ on it through their bold, thought-provoking gestural artworks and performances where AI is shown to be much more than a generative tool.

Sougwen Chung’s work with AI represents a significant divergence from the dominant AI paradigm, drawing in diverse audiences from art lovers and AI enthusiasts to art+tech watchers and experts in robotics and machine learning. HOFA Co-Founder and art+tech entrepreneur Elio D’Anna considers Relational Gestures a major part of the Gallery’s fall line-up: “Sougwen’s exhibition is an interesting departure from what we usually see with AI art because their process is as much a part of the show as their captivating gestural paintings. Being honoured as an Innovator in the TIME100 AI list is also a huge accolade and demonstrates the significance of their work. We are very excited about their upcoming show.”

When asked what motivates their expanding artistic practice, Sougwen explains, “I’ve seen how an interdisciplinary curiosity can be a force for breaking barriers between the arts, sciences, technology, design and engineering, and I’m interested in how art can shape our cultural imagination about technology.”

Bio-Generative Artist Agoria Concludes Scorpios, Mykonos’ $3m Summer Art Program

  • Scorpios, Mykonos 7-week Encounters ‘In Resonance’ summer program has brought renowned generative artists and musicians together for unprecedented collaborations, fusing new media and music.
  • Notably, primary art sales have already exceeded $3m, and secondary sales to date contributing over $800k.
  • Over half a million visitors have experienced these generative art masterpieces amidst the breathtaking beachfront backdrop of Scorpios, Mykonos.

French AI artist and polyhyphenate creative Agoria will on 24 August 2023 launch his new collection of bio-generative artworks ‘Bohem-IA’ in the highly anticipated closing act of the successful Encounters ‘In Resonance’ 7-week summer arts program at Scorpios, Mykonos (ends 3 September 2023).

The program is part of a visionary experimental platform created by renowned Mykonos-based creative and culture collective, Scorpios, to explore innovative art and culture experiences and the artists bold enough to make them. For the inaugural edition of Encounters, Scorpios collaborated with London-based contemporary art gallery and tech entrepreneurs HOFA to curate an unprecedented collaboration between artists and musicians.
So far, sales of the artwork collections released have topped $3m, with secondary sales in excess of $800k and counting.

One of many highlights of ‘In Resonance’ was the release of ‘Winds of Yawanawa’, a series of sold-out digital artworks by the popular Turkish-American generative artist, Refik Anadol, co-created with the Yawanawa Indigenous communities of Aldeia Sagrada and Nova Esperanca. The artwork series was commissioned by Impact One as part of its Possible Futures program, to reflect the dynamic interrelationship between Yawanawa culture and the Amazon Forest. Pre-sales of this collection sold out within hours and the project has raised $1.5m so far, thanks to Anadol and Impact One’s donations to support long-term initiatives for the protection of Yawanawa heritage.

Agoria is a veteran generative artist, having begun his exploration of AI-based artworks using bespoke models inspired by the organic forms and the vibrance of living systems in the mid-2010s. He is a talented DJ, music producer, AI-model developer, scientist, and expert on the role of technology in creating and mediating art experiences.

In ‘Bohem-IA’, Agoria celebrates the creative, collaborative ethos of Scorpios and the captivating beauty of Mykonos Island. The collection of 22 unique works conjures the magnificent vibrance of the Island’s coral reefs, alive with colour and motion, and the life-giving luminosity of the sunlight that bathes it through the pristine waters of the coast. It is as much an ode to nature’s matchless palette of chameleonic hues as it is a celebration of what has made Scorpios, Mykonos a summer gathering place for artists and art lovers alike.

Shedding light on the inspiration behind ‘Bohem-IA’, Agoria explains, “Scorpios Mykonos is a very special place. It’s an artistic and cultural sanctuary that has given AI artists like me a rare platform to showcase our work and experiment with new, innovative models this summer. ‘Bohem-IA’ is my way of celebrating the unique essence of Scorpios.”

For HOFA Co-Founder and art-tech Entrepreneur Elio D’Anna, it is fitting that the closing act of Scorpios Encounters’ ‘In Resonance’ will be an emphatic visual homage to the values that inspired it. “HOFA was one of the first contemporary galleries in the world to embrace the role of technology and Web3 in creating art and delivering new, exciting art experiences. The success of our partnership with Scorpios, bringing the world’s best generative artists to collaborate with musicians and musical directors, is as clear an indication as ever that the market for digital art is maturing and is here to stay.”

Tau’s new works, developed in collaboration with Jean Claude Ades, maestro of eclectic dancefloor rhythms, is based on light data collected in the island of Delos and is billed to go live during the second set (23 – 24 July) of the summer-long program.

French biological generative artist and musician Agoria will also present a new artwork created through the algorithmic fusion of sunset data captured at Scorpios, Mykonos (24 – 25 Aug), while New Zealander Jesse Woolston will release new AI artworks created around the theme of knowledge, spiritual beliefs and the power of AI in the fight against climate change (31 Aug – 1 Sept).

Other feature artists and musicians include Hugo Johnson, the hypnotic visual storyteller, who alongside Bedouin, known for their Middle Eastern and Western sound fusions, will present their collaborative masterpiece, Zorba, which reimagines extreme weather phenomena using geographic data.

Australian light sculptor Jason Sims, in collaboration with musical protege of meditative soundscapes Satori, will immerse viewers in a light-mediated exploration of natural systems (10 – 11 August), while the pioneering Azeri new media artist Orkhan, along with the music director of Scorpios Mykonos Lannka, will present a new work in the Relic series exploring eastern cultural heritage and tapestries through physical data sculptures and paintings (4 – 5 August).

Scorpios Co-Founder and President, Thomas Heyne, believes the new program will resonate with Scorpios’ growing community. He says, “Charting new creative territory is what we do at Scorpios and our vision for ‘In Resonance’ is to create a more multidimensional and fulfilling experience for artists and our community.”
