“Think Business, Think Hong Kong” coming to Paris

  • Mega promotion to spotlight benefits of partnering with Hong Kong to tap post-pandemic opportunities in Asia

The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) will take its mega promotion campaign, Think Business, Think Hong Kong, to Paris on 19 September. The full-day symposium, set to take place at Carrousel du Louvre Paris, will bring together business leaders from Hong Kong and France to discuss the latest developments and opportunities in Asia’s new economy and across diverse sectors, including green finance, sustainability, innovation and technology, and more.

As the HKTDC’s first large-scale promotion event in Europe after the pandemic, it is expected to attract more than 1,000 participants to explore business cooperation and opportunities.

The HKTDC’s Think Business, Think Hong Kong campaign aims to showcase Hong Kong as a resilient business and investment hub and the ideal platform for global businesses to tap opportunities in the thriving Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), and wider China and Asia markets.

At the event, Dr Peter K N Lam, HKTDC Chairman, Mr Paul Chan, Financial Secretary of the HKSAR and Mr Olivier Becht, France’s Minister for Foreign Trade, Economic Attractiveness and French Nationals Abroad will deliver remarks at the symposium’s opening session.

A number of high profile speakers will share their insights, including Mr Arnault Castel, Founder of kapok; Mr Dennis Chan, Founder and Creative Director of Qeelin; Mr Jose Maurellet, SC, Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Bar Association and Des Voeux Chambers; and Mr Wilfred Yiu, Co-Chief Operating Officer & Head of Equities of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited.

The event will feature thematic sessions on hot topics in business today, including on green finance, opportunities in innovation in Asia and business opportunities in the GBA, and how French companies can capture opportunities through Hong Kong.

There will be extended networking activities, with Hong Kong government officials and business leaders from across sectors, including technology, finance and professional services, taking part in the programme. One-on-one business consultations, on-site business matching with French companies as well as the Hong Kong Dinner provide many opportunities for the business communities of France and Hong Kong to connect.

Strong France-Hong Kong ties
France is an important trading and investment partner of Hong Kong. In 2021, it was Hong Kong’s third largest trading partner, export market and import market in the EU. France was also the largest EU investor in Hong Kong at the end of 2020, while Hong Kong was the fourth most popular destination for French investment in Asia. Hong Kong investors also made substantial investments in France, with the city the second largest Asian investor in the country. As of 2022, there are more than 360 French companies in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong an ideal business partner
Hong Kong has been consistently ranked top on economic freedom and competitiveness. Its institutional strengths, including the free trade and investment regimes, a simple and low tax system and free flow of capital and goods offer a favourable business environment for investors.

Beyond trade and finance, Hong Kong offers exciting prospects in innovation and technology (I&T) for French start-ups. Entry into or expansion in Mainland China as well as conducting joint research can help French enterprises further grow their business. With its aim to create an I&T new hub of 30,000 hectares, Hong Kong’s Northern Metropolis project also offers many opportunities, which will be highlighted at the symposium.

Hong Kong’s strategic location as an international financial, fundraising and investment hub and as the international gateway between Mainland China and the rest of the world presents immense opportunities for French companies seeking to expand in the GBA, Mainland China, Belt and Road countries and ASEAN.

The 33rd HKTDC Hong Kong Book Fair, 6th Sports and Leisure Expo, and 3rd World of Snacks drew nearly one million visitors in total

Sophia Chong, Acting Executive Director of the HKTDC, said: “We are thrilled to announce the resounding success of this year’s Hong Kong Book Fair, Sports and Leisure Expo, and World of Snacks. The full reopening of Hong Kong has resulted in a surge in participation from citizens and tourists alike, with numerous mainland and overseas authors and exhibitors attending in person. The government’s distribution of consumption vouchers has also fueled citizens’ eagerness to spend at the three exhibitions, contributing to the vibrant and lively ambience of the events. This year’s Book Fair, with its focus on Children’s and Young Adult Literature, has staged a diverse range of cultural activities and seminars. Thanks to the sponsorship of Create Hong Kong* (CreateHK) of the Government of the HKSAR, we have established a brand new World of Art & Culture zone, with the aim of introducing literature and cultural arts from all over the world to a broad reader base. Our ultimate goal is to promote a city-wide reading culture and position Hong Kong as an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange.”

Fiction, comics, travel, children’s books and literature most popular genres
Over 800 visitors were interviewed by a research institute commissioned by the HKTDC to glean insights into their reading and spending habits. Respondents spent an average HK$872 at the fair this year, the survey showed. Remarkably, this comprised 70% of their HK$1,254 average annual expenditure on printed books. These findings underscore the Book Fair’s pivotal role as a platform for book enthusiasts to acquire their beloved reads.

The survey also shed light on respondents’ reading habits, revealing that an overwhelming 96% had read printed books within the past month, with an average reading time of 16 hours. Fiction emerged as the most popular book category, with 52% of respondents indicating their interest, followed by comics (26%), travel (20%), children’s and young-adult books (20%), and literature (19%). The categories of self-improvement, enrichment, art and music, and inspirational books also garnered significant interest. E-books were also popular, with 65% of respondents having read e-books within the past month, averaging nine hours of reading time during that period. Most respondents (59%) visited the Book Fair to buy new books, while 49% enjoyed discounts offered at the fair. Additionally, 25% joined the diverse cultural activities, with 18% intending to buy children’s books.

Cultural July events continue with fair highlights available for viewing
The fair featured more than 600 seminars and cultural events held both onsite and offsite, including the Eight Seminar Series. Running in parallel the Cultural July: Joyful Summer Reading campaign, held across Hong Kong, drew more than 350,000 participants.

Recordings of selected seminars are available online. Readers can revisit them through the Book Fair website or the HKTDC’s Youtube channel. This year’s Book Fair has concluded but Cultural July continues until 31 July, with a range of sharing sessions, talks and book launches in all 18 districts of Hong Kong. Details can be found on the Cultural July website – http://www.hkbookfair.hktdc.com/CulturalJuly

The Cultural Journey Online is also available on the Book Fair website, gathering e-reading resources and activities like virtual seminars and exhibitions from our partners which include: SHKP Reading Club’s Read For More, Hong Kong Public libraries, Culture is…, Google Arts & Culture, encouraging citizens to expand their horizons and promoting a reading culture.

Sports and Leisure Expo and World of Snacks well received
Offering a wide selection of sports and leisure products and services, along with more than 1,200 tasty treats and snacks, the Hong Kong Sports and Leisure Expo and World of Snacks are also concluded today. The former featured free trials and interactive experiences while the latter offered visitors delicacies from around the world, along with workshops, activities and tasting sessions. Both events were enthusiastically received.

The three events launched the series of HKTDC exhibitions in the second-half of this year. In the coming months, the HKTDC will continue to host a diverse range of large-scale exhibitions to support and strengthen Hong Kong’s economy across different sectors. Next month, visitors can expect to enjoy the Food Expo, Food Expo Pro, Home Delights Expo, Beauty & Wellness Expo, and Hong Kong International Tea Fair. The two-day event attracted more than 2,000 buyers from 8 ASEAN countries, including their local chambers and associations, underscoring their interest in leveraging Hong Kong as a gateway to expand their business worldwide. This signature promotion event showcased Hong Kong’s strengths and highlighted the city’s latest developments and quality products and services, while demonstrating its role as a leading international business hub.

The exclusive Hong Kong Night Cocktail Reception held on the first day of the event brought together Thai, ASEAN and Hong Kong business leaders to network and explore business opportunities. Dr Peter K N Lam, HKTDC Chairman, opened the event, with Mr Algernon Yau, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and Dr Chadchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok, delivering speeches.

Dr Lam said: “We bring to Bangkok this time a focus on lifestyle. We also have experts sharing insights on e-commerce, sustainability and ESG and the future of retail at a series of Trade Talks, all topics of interest to Thai businesses and in line with Thailand’s BCG growth strategy. Hong Kong’s position as the gateway between the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) and ASEAN, both fast-growing areas, provide many opportunities for Thai businesses and reinforce Hong Kong-Thailand economic ties.”

Mr. Yau said that the ties between Hong Kong and Thailand have flourished over the years, fostering a robust partnership that has propelled mutual growth. Mr Yau highlighted Hong Kong’s strengths in business under the one country, two systems principle: “By capitalising on our unique strengths, Hong Kong connects global investors with promising projects along the Belt and Road, while at the same time fostering collaboration and innovation within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.”

Dr Sittipunt said: “Bangkok and Hong Kong are undoubtedly two thriving cities in Asia, each with its unique strengths and advantages. I would like to emphasise that our true potential lies in working together. By pooling our strengths, expertise, and resources, be it from the government, public or private sectors, we can create more opportunities and foster a business ecosystem that attracts investments, drives innovation and supports emerging industries in our region.”

Thai companies sourced new and innovative quality lifestyle products and services from 120 Hong Kong exhibitors at the TBTHK Trade Expo. The Expo featured products and services from a wide range of sectors in fashion & lifestyle, health & wellness, home & living, toys & gadgets and smart city solutions, over 80% of which were new to the Thai market.

It was the first time for Hong Kong exhibitor EDIT & EDITECTURE to join TBTHK, which marked their debut in the Thai market. Ms Jacqueline Chak, Co-founder and Director of the company, which focuses on sustainable interior and architecture projects, said they joined the event to explore networking opportunities and find potential partners. “The result of the event has honestly exceeded our expectations. We see a lot of interest in what we do, even those outside of the design industry, like makeup and construction. An attendee said that they have been following us from overseas, but never reached out due to the high shipping expenses. It’s nice to know that we can finally come here and do business directly in Thailand.”

B. DUCK, the Hong Kong original brand and one of the largest domestic character IPs in Mainland China, also joined the event. Ms Rossukhon Lertvilai, Marketing Manager, said: “There are a lot of people who showed interest in our brand. We’re looking for new partners and new opportunities in Thailand.”

Central Food Retail Company Limited is the leading supermarket chain in Thailand operating since 1996. The company’s Head of Sales and Product Development, Ms Maythinee Surapatatna said: “This is my first time joining an event like this and I find the Expo very impressive. As a buyer, I’m looking for ways to produce supplements products and it’s not easy to find suppliers in Thailand, so I’m happy for this opportunity. Attending these events, I’ve found potential partners.”

Riding on the Trade Expo, a series of Trade Talks was held, covering retail technology, licensing opportunities, e-commerce and cross-border logistics as well as sustainability & ESG. Experts from renowned retail groups, associations and innovative companies shared their market insights during the two-day event.

During the session of Innovating the Future of Retail – Empowering Business with Technology, one of the speakers Mr Anson Balley, Head of Consumer & Retail, APAC of KPMG China, pointed out that artificial intelligence (AI) will become the most disruptive technology. However, areas such as IoT security, virtual events, digital twins, sustainable fashion and packaging will be the next generation of companies.

“Everything is going to be connected in the future. So, if we look at IoT devices, in the next 2 years, there will be nearly 31 billion connected devices. So, everything will be connected like never before.”

To highlight Hong Kong’s dynamic lifestyle and wide variety of design-led products and fashion, the HKTDC partnered with Hong Kong-linked merchants and restaurants in Bangkok to stage a citywide promotion, providing Thai consumers with a range of promotional offers until the end of July. Participating merchants include well-known brands, such as Kam’s Roast, Maxim’s, City Chain and more. In collaboration with LINE MAN, the leading online food delivery platform in Thailand, select Hong Kong-style restaurants have exclusive dining offers until the end of the month as well.

The sixth edition of Start-up Express, an entrepreneurship development programme organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), came to a successful conclusion today. The judging panel at the in-person Final Pitching, held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, selected 10 winning start-ups from 20 finalists. The My Favourite Start-up Award, decided through live polling of the audience, was awarded to Meat The Next, while the ESG Award went to Negawatt Technology in recognition of its sustainable and socially impactful business solution. The 10 winning teams will participate in a series of local and international events to develop their businesses by building connections, exploring markets, seeking partners and enhancing brand awareness.

The record number of applications for Start-up Express 2023 reflected the great enthusiasm of Hong Kong’s entrepreneurs. The 20 finalists come from diverse sectors such as ed tech, con (construction) tech & prop tech, fintech, health tech, as well as metaverse, Web 3.0, smart city, HR tech and food tech. More than 100 industry players were invited to attend the Final Pitching Day in person, including investors, business leaders, representatives from overseas entities and more. Booths were also set up during the event to showcase Start-up Express past winners and finalists, in addition to demo-pitch from secondary school teams.

Stephen Liang, Assistant Executive Director of the HKTDC, said Hong Kong start-ups were highly adaptive and had shown great resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic. “We’re still at an initial phase of post-COVID-19 recovery, when the global economic outlook is still uncertain. Investors remain conservative, and start-ups are in need of more support. Finalists of this year’s Start-up Express have developed products with advanced technology, and they have great potential to become unicorns. With business matching via HKTDC’s physical and online platforms to help start-ups connect with international investors and partners, we will step up efforts to promote local innovations to the world, and grasp post-COVID-19 opportunities,” Mr Liang said.

Diverse opportunities offered to winning start-ups
Final Pitching contestants presented innovative business ideas and responded to questions raised by a distinguished panel of judges. This year’s judging panel comprises five renowned industry experts: Jason Chiu, Chairman of Hong Kong Startup Council; Gordon Yen, Chairman of Hong Kong Business Angel Network; Winnie Han, Head of China Issuer Services/ Senior Vice President, Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited; Ben Cheng, President and Chief Executive Officer of C Capital; and Danny Yeung, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Prenetics. The 10 winning start-ups are: Big Bang Academy, DimOrder, Haofood, Kodifly, Meat the Next, Moongate, Negawatt Technology, Neuropix, Rocket Academy, and Syngular Technology (click here to download the list of winners and their company profiles). The HKTDC will arrange a series of exposure opportunities through which the winning teams can interact with buyers and investors.

Outstanding presentations at Final Pitching
Jason Chiu, Chairman of Hong Kong Startup Council is a third-time judge of the programme. He said: “I am thrilled to participate in this year’s Final Pitching. Entering its sixth edition, Start-up Express’ competition is fiercer than ever, and each team displayed enormous growth potential. The industry verticals of the finalists this year were also more diverse, ranging from Web3.0 to con tech, which demonstrates their innovative thinking and proves the capability of Hong Kong tech talents. It is encouraging to see how vibrant the Hong Kong start-up ecosystem is becoming, with the number of start-ups increasing over the past few years. The winning teams this year will leverage the unique platform of Start-up Express to obtain more business opportunities and connections, and explore the Mainland and overseas markets.”

Danny Yeung, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Prenetics, who led his start-up to unicorn status, gave insightful advice to the finalists. He said: “It is definitely challenging for early-stage companies to gain a foothold in competitive markets. I am happy to see that the HKSAR government is strengthening its support to the innovative & tech sector; Start-up Express is also a meaningful programme for start-ups to connect with investors and business leaders. He also cheered for start-ups: “The journey of building a start-up is never easy. Founders must keep an eye on the latest market trends and make unremitting efforts, in order to scale-up in the challenging business environment.”

Grasping the market pulse and building a global network
Start-up Express gives start-ups the chance to promote their business ideas. They can take part in exhibitions in Mainland China and overseas, and investor meetings in Hong Kong and the mainland. They can also strengthen their business networks, as well as expand their markets and businesses through the exposure they have gained.

Dr Martin Zhu, Co-founder of i2Cool, a winner last year, said: “Through Start-up Express, we have unlocked many publicity opportunities. HKTDC’s global network also helped us obtain many new customers from all over the world. For example, at last year’s Entrepreneur Day, we met with a construction company from the Philippines, and signed a large-amount business order with them on the spot. All of these are valuable opportunities offered by Start-up Express.”

Start-up Express International returns in December
The HKTDC has always given its full support to Hong Kong’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, helping to maintain the city’s status as a competitive business centre and hub for innovation. Launched in 2022, Start-up Express International has attracted participants from around the world, including the United States, Germany, Japan, Korea, Turkey, Singapore and more. 10 winners were selected and exchange sessions were arranged between them and the Hong Kong start-up winners. Start-up Express International will return during Entrepreneur Day in December. The HKTDC will support the winning international start-ups to set up their businesses in Hong Kong, as well as to explore the mainland and Greater Bay Area markets.

HKTDC takes Hong Kong to Bangkok

  • Think Business, Think Hong Kong showcases city as a premium business location and explores Hong Kong – Thailand collaboration opportunities

The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) is taking its Think Business, Think Hong Kong (TBTHK) signature promotion event to Bangkok next week. The event will showcase Hong Kong as a resilient innovation hub where businesses from around the world can seize opportunities. TBTHK will run on 13-14 July at Centara Grand and Bangkok Convention Centre at CentralWorld, where the Hong Kong and Thai business communities will explore partnership opportunities through exhibition, seminars and networking activities.

Mr Ronald Ho, Regional Director, South East Asia and South Asia of the HKTDC

Mr Ronald Ho, Regional Director, South East Asia and South Asia of the HKTDC said at the press luncheon, “Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has a long history of close economic ties with Hong Kong and is the city’s second-largest trading partner in merchandise trade. The TBTHK in Bangkok will highlight Hong Kong’s offerings in ASEAN, as well as provide additional impetus for promoting regional trade and investment partnerships and creating opportunities through regional economic and supply chain integration.”

“Our main goal is to promote Hong Kong’s strengths in merchandises and services and introduce the city’s latest developments, demonstrating to the Thai business community that Hong Kong is the premier international business hub in Asia, as well as an investment and business platform for Thai enterprises to maximise China opportunities. Simultaneously, we will showcase how the Thai, mainland and Hong Kong business communities can collaborate to create mutually beneficial business opportunities and maintain long-standing close business and trade ties.”

“These opportunities are made possible by strong, visionary planning by governments, as well as free trade agreements such as FTAs and Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), that provide a framework for regional cooperation.” Ronald added.

Hong Kong is at the geographic heart of Asia and serves as an international financial centre with distinct advantages such as providing trusted legal, financial, investment and tax systems, producing high quality, innovative and creative products and services for trade, and serving as the pre-eminent access point to explore and develop business links and markets with Mainland China, the ASEAN and beyond.

The city is a bridge between the mainland and the world. Its role as a two-way platform for the flow of capital, goods, information and people is as important as ever. Development plans such as the Belt and Road Initiative and Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) Development Plan create new prospects, expanding Hong Kong’s role as a hub for finance, trade, logistics and cultural exchange. Hong Kong is the ideal partner for Thai companies seeking to tap the vast opportunities from the GBA and international markets.

This year, this signature promotion event will be a holistic platform where the Thai trade community can learn about Hong Kong’s role as an ideal gateway for them to tap into mainland and international markets. Building on the strong trade ties between Hong Kong and Thailand, a Trade Expo showcasing high-quality and innovative products from more than 100 Hong Kong exhibitors, including Chow Tai Fook, Green Common, B.Duck, Vita Green, Memorigin, Smart City consortium and more. This would help Hong Kong companies introduce high-quality products to the regional market, while Thai companies may identify potential business partners and supply chains for business collaborations.

During today’s press luncheon, a wide range of Hong Kong’s innovative and creative quality products ranging from fashion & lifestyle, home & gifts, sustainable & green sectors were showcased to Thai media as a trade expo preview.

Featured products include the following:
– Kapture’s tote bags, which combine BioNTex(TM) antiviral tech and upcycled fabric from garment production;
– Iconic Camel flasks, which have championed vacuum technology since 1940’s;

In addition to the Trade Expo, a Trade Talks series solidifying Hong Kong’s competitive advantage as a trading hub will be held during the event period. Experts from renowned retail groups, associations and innovative companies will gather at the Trade Talks to shed lights on a plethora of hot topics, such as Innovating the Future of Retail, Maximising Business Opportunities through Licensing, Re-shaping E-commerce and Embracing Sustainability & ESG.

A giveaway session on the second day of the event (14 July) will offer prizes including smart phones, Tourbillion, tablets and more. Participants may have a chance to win air tickets during the event period.
