  • Over 1,000 film and entertainment works uploaded on FILMART’s online platform, further solidifying Hong Kong’s position as a regional IP trading hub.
  • FILMART’s virtual platform accessible until 13 April, offering ongoing collaboration opportunities.

The Hong Kong International Film and TV Market (FILMART) and EntertainmentPulse, organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), concluded successfully today.

Asia’s leading cross-media, cross-industry trading platform attracted over 7,500 participants from 50 countries and regions and over 760 exhibitors from 27 countries and regions. Notably, there was a significant year-on-year increase in ASEAN exhibitors and buyers, 50% and 6%, respectively.

FILMART showcased a wide range of the latest film, TV and animation works as well as cutting-edge technologies in film production, including the debut of a virtual production studio in a collaboration with Hong Kong creative tech firm Votion Studios. A number of MoUs were signed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in film and entertainment.

Promoting ASEAN and trade cooperation
In recent years, the film and entertainment industry in ASEAN countries, particularly Thailand, has experienced robust growth. In addition to the Thai Pavilion set up by the Thai Ministry of Culture, FILMART also held a Thai Day on opening day to leverage Hong Kong’s platform for industry development and encourage collaboration between Hong Kong and Thailand.

Hong Kong SAR Chief Executive John Lee led a delegation to visit three ASEAN countries, including Indonesia, last year, encouraging ASEAN businesses to leverage Hong Kong’s platform to further grow their entertainment industry. Following the visit, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy of Indonesia staged a country pavilion for the first time at FILMART to showcase their film and TV productions. Rina Dayamanti, Festival Director of Jakarta Film Week and one of the pavilion representatives, expressed that Indonesian exhibitors were keen to meet a large number of Mainland Chinese buyers at the fairground and to explore the possibility of producing Indonesian versions of mainland IP projects.

The HKTDC also signed MoUs with several organisations, including the Department of International Trade Promotion of the Thai Ministry of Commerce and the Guangzhou Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism, to strengthen bilateral economic and cultural cooperation. Additionally, a MoU was signed with the Shanghai Broadcasting Film & Television Producers Association to diversify bilateral cooperation in entertainment beyond co-productions.

Film companies leveraged FILMART’s platform to announce their latest productions and upcoming plans. Notably, Alibaba Digital Media and Entertainment Group unveiled the “Hong Kong Cultural and Art Industry Revitalisation Program”, committing to invest no less than HK$5 billion over the next five years to reinforce collaboration with Hong Kong’s cultural and entertainment industry.

To support Hong Kong’s growth as an innovation-driven economy and regional IP trading centre, FILMART this year strengthened its online platform, promoting exhibitors’ creative IPs, providing business referrals and facilitating business matching. As of early March, over 1,000 film and entertainment works have been uploaded to the platform.

First-time Indonesia Pavilion exhibitors Talamedia announced that Cercamon, Dubai-based global film sales firm, has acquired the worldwide rights of Crocodile Tears, a film co-produced by Talamedia and production companies from France, Germany and Singapore.

Another first-time Indonesia Pavilion exhibitor KawanKawan Media, which has produced award-winning films, also announced they concluded principal photography of their latest feature, Tale of the Land, which is now in post-production.

Euro-Asia co-production opportunities in the spotlight
The Hong Kong Film Development Council launched the Hong Kong-Europe-Asian Film Collaboration Funding Scheme”, thanks to the Hong Kong SAR Government’s investment in the Film Development Fund, to encourage more international productions to come to Hong Kong to collaborate with Hong Kong filmmakers.

One of the guest speakers at EntertainmentPulse, Catherine Souyri-Desrosier, International Department Director of Centre national du cinéma et de l’image animée, commented: “Co-production is at the heart of France’s cultural policy to promote cultural diversity, cultural exchanges and cross-fertilisation. As France has developed a proactive policy to support co-productions with more than 60 bilateral treaties, including with four countries in Asia: China, Cambodia, South Korea and India. We look forward to collaborating with outstanding Asian crews and developing high-quality productions.”

New wave in Hong Kong cinema
In recent years, Hong Kong has seen the emergence of talented young directors, whose works have made their mark in the global film industry, ushering in a new wave in Hong Kong cinema. Many of them were supported by the Hong Kong SAR Government’s First Feature Film Initiative and Film Production Financing Scheme.

At the concurrent EntertainmentPulse, Hong Kong film director Stanley Kwan said: “The Hong Kong SAR Government and industry veterans should assist high-quality films in reaching international audiences through various channels and bring new directors to people’s attention to encourage more new talents to create.”

Cross-media events at FILMART
The Digital Entertainment Summit featured at EntertainmentPulse explored trending topics in the world of digital entertainment, including animation and cross-border collaboration. Shimizu Shinji, Chief Advisor of Toei Animation, the animation production company behind box office hits Ikky-san and One Piece, shared his insights on the application of digital entertainment in animation creation. Furthermore, Across animation digital effects and interactive solutions, 38 Hong Kong production companies at the Hong Kong Animation and Digital Entertainment Pavilion showcased Hong Kong’s latest wave of young creatives.

FILMART is not only a trading platform for the film and entertainment industry, but also a showcase for music producers. Led by music director Dr Mui Kwong Chiu, the inaugural Hong Kong Film Music Fiesta – Rhythm of Martial Arts Music Concert featured iconic theme songs from classic Hong Kong films.

The online platform of FILMART will remain open until 13 April. Registered users can rewatch EntertainmentPulse seminars and connect with global buyers and exhibitors to explore more business opportunities.

Change is ever constant, and our community is becoming more global than ever.” On the experience of Nike brand building, he believed the power of sport was underpinned by the power of people. He emphasised the importance of staying committed and working with the right partners.

Overseas marketing experts presented their ideas, including Jungsuk Jay Lee, recent Chief Ecosystem Officer of NAVER Z Corp (ZEPETO); Dani Mariano, President of Razorfish; Simon Barnett, Director of Brand Partnerships & Advertising of Moonbug Entertainment, which distributes IP rights for children’s entertainment brands Blippi and Cocomelon; Giovanni Musillo, Managing Director (Hong Kong and Macao) of OnTheList; Patrick Garvey, Founding Partner of WE ARE Pi, a renowned advertising agency in the Netherlands; Yoji Minakuchi, Fellow & Chief Design Officer of Suntory Holdings from Japan; Johanna Monange, Founder and CEO of Maison 21G, a perfume brand from France; Julie Nestor, Executive Vice President, Head of Marketing and Communications of Asia Pacific for Mastercard; and Bradley Horowitz, CEO of MALIN+GOETZ, a skincare brand from New York.

Organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the 40th HKTDC Hong Kong International Jewellery Show and 10th HKTDC Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show gathered over 4,000 exhibitors from 44 countries and regions. The Jewellery Show concluded at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre today and the Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show closed at AsiaWorld-Expo on Saturday, marking the successful return of the “two shows, two venues” format for the first time since the pandemic.

The shows attracted some 81,000 buyers from 137 countries and regions. The Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show drew over 31,000 buyers from 125 countries and regions, while more than 49,000 buyers from 132 countries and regions joined the Jewellery Show. For the two shows together, buyers from Mainland China, India, Japan, the Philippines, Thailand and the United States ranked top in terms of non-Hong Kong visitors, underscoring the shows’ leading world position.

Exhibitors and buyers were optimistic about a thriving jewellery market. An on-site survey of 1,435 respondents found 62.3% anticipated growth in overall sales in the next one to two years while 31.3% expected stable sales and only 6.4% predicted a decrease.

“For the upcoming exhibition peak season, the HKTDC will present some 10 business fairs next month, encompassing a wide range of industries including innovation, electronics, gifts, home products, fashion and packaging. These events will serve as platforms for buyers and suppliers to make business and connect, and in turn solidify Hong Kong’s position as a global exhibition centre and bring substantial economic benefits to the city.”

Under the hybrid EXHIBITION+ format, the twin jewellery shows combined in-person access at the venues with online negotiations via HKTDC’s Click2Match smart business-matching platform, which will be available until 11 March, and buying through hktdc.com Sourcing. The HKTDC launched the self-authentication service at this year’s twin shows, enabling buyers to verify identities and obtain electronic badges (eBadges) in advance for rapid, seamless access to venues, greatly enhancing the trade show experience. Most buyers welcomed this eBadge arrangement, including the self-authentication feature and entry arrangements.

Trading at the twin shows was promising. Over the past 40 editions, our business grew together with the show and our jewellery products are exported worldwide today. During the fairs, we met with new buyers from Mainland China, the Philippines and the Middle East. We expect the sales turnover generated by this year’s show to increase by 20%.”

At the Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem, and Pearl Show, one of the exhibitors, Rosaria Borriello, Manager of Borriello Massimo from Italy said: “We love the Hong Kong show very much. It’s the perfect place to do business and meet customers from everywhere. Our Mediterranean red coral showcased this year has again attracted strong buyers’ interest. Winning designs raise curtain on HKTDC Hong Kong jewellery shows

Emerging Hong Kong talents showcase Contemporary Heritage

  • The 25th Hong Kong Jewellery Design Competition award ceremony was held today and winning designs, resonating with the Contemporary Heritage theme, are on display in Hall 1E at the HKTDC Hong Kong International Jewellery Show
  • Open Group Best of Show Awards convey themes of love and memories, neon signs, and traditional Chinese craftsmanship
  • All Student Group prizes went to Hong Kong Design Institute students

Organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), the 40th HKTDC Hong Kong International Jewellery Show and 10th HKTDC Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show are being held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) and AsiaWorld-Expo respectively. The award ceremony of the 25th Hong Kong Jewellery Design Competition, a key event of the twin jewellery shows, was held at the HKCEC today, paying tribute to the outstanding creativity of local talents. Jewellery industry players can admire the winning designs at the display in Hall 1E.

Jointly organised by the HKTDC, the Hong Kong Jewellers’ & Goldsmiths’ Association,  Hong Kong Jewellery & Jade Manufacturers Association, Hong Kong Jewelry Manufacturers’ Association and the Diamond Federation of Hong Kong, China, the 25th Hong Kong Jewellery Design Competition aims to discover talents for the industry, elevate Hong Kong design excellence and promote exquisite jewellery collections designed and manufactured in Hong Kong to international buyers.

In line with the Contemporary Heritage theme, competition participants skillfully combined traditional craftsmanship with modern designs to create fashionable jewellery which embodied the significance of craftsmanship across generations and echo the twin jewellery shows’ theme this year, Be Part of the Splendid Legacy.

A distinguished panel of six jewellery and design sector professionals evaluated both Open Group and Student Group entries based on creativity and innovation, aesthetics, craftsmanship, wearability and topic relevance. Marketability was a sixth criterion for the Open Group.

Open Group winners showcase Contemporary Heritage
One of the three Open Group Best of Show Awards went to Swan Chung for Kid IT Bag (Category: Bracelet/ Necklace). Ms Chung received a coin purse from her grandfather when she was a child, inspiring her to incorporate the double-clasp concept it into her design. She wished all “grown-up kids” could own beloved treasures forever to pass on the love and memories.

Another Best of Show Award winner was Joanna Shum who used gold, gemstones, diamonds and enamel to recreate Hong Kong’s vibrant neon-lit street views with The Colour of the Neon Sign (Category: Pendant/ Brooch), hoping to preserve this unique visual art permanently.

Chan Hoi-yi also won Best of Show with Born of Blue (Category: Pendant/ Brooch), which weaves the symmetrical Chinese knot feature and tassels into a blue, wavy design, perfectly embodying traditional art which goes beyond boundaries and exemplifies the design excellence of the modern generation.

Dancing lions and fire dragons inspire student group winners
Open to students of institutions registered in Hong Kong, the Student Group category aims to inspire young design talents to join the jewellery design profession. The top three awards went to Hong Kong Design Institute students this year.  Siu Wing-ki was Student Group Champion with Flame Dance Blessing (Category: Bracelet/ Necklace). She used a pearl to emulate the dragon ball guiding fire-dragon dancers and 18 karat gold threads to intricately recreate burning incense sticks, symbolising luck and blessing, on the fire dragon’s body.

Cheung Hoi-lam won the Student Group First Runner-up and Second Runner-Up with two entries: Lion’s Rhythm with Bamboo (Category: Bracelet/ Necklace) and Lion’s Echo of Tradition (Category: Earrings), both with a lion-dance concept. Guangdong Lion Dance is listed as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage, and Ms Cheung used green gems to bring eyes of the lion to life for the Cai Qing ritual, bringing prosperity. Lion’s Rhythm with Bamboo added the bamboo, traditionally symbolising the virtues of a nobleman.

The Craftsmanship and Technology Award, selected from Open Group and Student Group entries, went to Tse Ka-wing (Category: Ring) for Dance With the Fire Dragon, which presents the delicate features of a fire dragon (including the dragon bone and incense sticks), using 18k gold, diamonds and semi-precious stones. The item turns Hong Kong’s Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance intangible cultural heritage into a fabulous ring, which can be an impressive collectable that brings the owner good health and prosperity.

Exhibitors worldwide gather at twin jewellery venues
The twin jewellery shows run concurrently at two venues. The Hong Kong International Diamond, Gem & Pearl Show runs from 27 February to 2 March at AsiaWorld-Expo and the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show from 29 February to 4 March at the HKCEC. The shows are attracting more than 4,000 exhibitors from 44 countries and regions, showcasing exquisite jewellery raw materials and finished fine jewellery. Participants can commute between AsiaWorld-Expo and the city centre, including the HKCEC, on shuttle buses.

HKTDC welcomes Hong Kong SAR’s 2024-25 budget

Supporting the continued development of SMEs and strengthening Hong Kong’s economy

The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) welcomes the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) 2024-25 budget.

The budget introduces a number of measures to boost Hong Kong’s economic growth and promote the continued development of SMEs and start-ups. These measures offer wide-ranging support to help SMEs manage their cash flow and accelerate their transformation, attract high-value added industries, capital and international talent to Hong Kong as well as promote green and digital transformation.

HKTDC Chairman Dr Peter K N Lam said: “At the HKTDC, our mission is to support SMEs and provide them with opportunities to grow and transform. We welcome the HKSAR Government’s initiative to extend the application period and increase the total guarantee commitment for the SME Financing Guarantee Scheme, and make continuous enhancements and inject more funds to the Dedicated Fund on Branding, Upgrading and Domestic Sales (“BUD Fund”). Aside from these initiatives, the introduction of enhancement measures for profit tax will also assist SMEs to tackle their capital flow challenges and accelerate their transformation.”

The HKTDC will work closely with the HKSAR Government to further promote Hong Kong’s strengths and eight centre advantages, move towards a green and digital future and create opportunities for Hong Kong’s industries to ensure the continued growth of the city’s economy. We will also reinforce Hong Kong’s important role as a two-way business and investment hub.

The budget reiterated Hong Kong’s role as a leading business platform for the Belt and Road Initiative. The HKTDC’s global network of 50 offices covers the Belt and Road’s main markets, from ASEAN to Africa, from Europe to South America. This year, we will set up two additional consultant offices along the Belt and Road to connect Hong Kong businesses with arising opportunities.

Dr Lam added that the next 10 years will be a “golden decade” for the Belt and Road.  The HKTDC will continue to be guided by the eight major steps of the Belt and Road Initiative, as announced by President Xi Jinping in 2023, and leverage our global network and major events to help Hong Kong businesses explore the Belt and Road market.

The HKTDC supports SMEs’ development and expansion via a range of support programmes, including the Transformation Sandbox (T-box), GoGBA one-stop platform and Digital Academy.

In the 2024-25 financial year, we will provide support to SMEs according to four main directions:

  • Assist SMEs to seize opportunities brought about by the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the country’s 14th Five-Year Plan;
  • Capture arising opportunities in the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership and other emerging markets, especially ASEAN and the Middle East;
  • Help SMEs achieve digital and green transformation; and
  • Enrich international business people’s stay in Hong Kong, enhance digital offerings in HKTDC exhibitions and conferences, and provide a seamless online and offline experience for event participants.
