Organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) and co-organised by the Hong Kong Optical Manufacturers Association (HKOMA), the 33rd Hong Kong International Optical Fair opened today and will run from 5 to 7 November at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. This morning’s opening ceremony was officiated by Jude Chow, Executive Deputy Chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries.

Jenny Koo, Acting Executive Director, HKTDC, stated in her opening remarks: “Hong Kong has long been one of the world’s leading exporters of optical products. Over the years, the Optical Fair has become a must-attend event for industry professionals from around the world. We are delighted to welcome over 660 exhibitors from 19 countries and regions this year. HKTDC has invited buyers from around the world to visit the fair, including from emerging markets such as Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam in ASEAN; Egypt and the UAE in the Middle East; and Brazil and Uruguay in South America; as well as from traditional markets like Germany, Spain, and the United Kingdom, creating substantial business opportunities for exhibitors.”

Diverse pavilions showcase global creativity and technology
Themed “Bright Eyes – New Horizons”, the Optical Fair brings a wealth of innovative products which integrate scientific research, design excellence and sustainability concepts. The fair features ten group pavilions, including the Hong Kong Optical Manufacturers Association (HKOMA), the Chinese Mainland (with delegations from Danyang, Zhejiang and Yingtan), Taiwan, Japan, Korea, and the new ASEAN pavilion, as well as “Visionaries of Style” which showcases creative and trendy designs. Highlighted examples include:

  • Japan Pavilion exhibitor Sasaki Celluloid (Booth: GH-C05) showcases eyewear crafted from rare celluloid material. Featuring a curved shape with coreless celluloid temples, the eyewear is designed for comfort. A timeless design with detailed cutting which combines expert Japanese technique and beauty in one ideal piece.

  • American brand Blake Kuwahara (Booth: GH-A18) at “Visionaries of Style” showcases intricate craftsmanship like laminated “frame-within-a-frame” construction. Every frame is meticulously handcrafted, highlighting nuanced details and superior craftsmanship.

The signature “Brand Name Gallery” showcases a curated selection of over 200 globally renowned brands spanning designer eyewear, trendy styles, and high-tech products. Notable brands include MINIMA from France, STEPPER from Germany, United Colors of Benetton from Italy, Masunaga since 1905 from Japan, nimome from Korea, Nano Vista from Spain, Collections Marcus Marienfeld from Switzerland, Ted Baker from the United Kingdom, and THRASHER from the USA.

Other exhibition zones are organised by product category, including the “Smart Glasses” zone which displays the ongoing trend of smart technology development, the “Designer Cafe and Innovation Hub” showcasing designer eyewear and innovative technology, as well as “Contact Lenses and Accessories”, “Diagnostic Instruments,” “Eyewear Accessories,” “Frames and Parts,” “Lenses,” “Optometric Instruments, Equipment & Machinery,” “Reading Glasses,” “Shop Fittings and Equipment,” and “Sporting and Professional Eyewear,” showcasing the innovation and diversity of the eyewear industry. For example:

  • Hong Kong Exhibitor Meisystem Asia Ltd. (Booth: 1B-B14) presents the EasyFit Trend ophthalmic lens edger, specifically designed for optical shops and small labs. This compact lens edger and beveler offers precision and reliability. It features an innovative lens testing system to boost productivity and boasts a modern, streamlined design.
  • Hong Kong Exhibitor Arts Optical Company Limited (Booth: GH-K01) introduces OPTI AI. Utilising VR to capture dynamic visual behavior patterns and powered by AI as its computational core. This breakthrough overcomes the limitations of traditional progressive lens design and fitting, creating bespoke lenses for individuals and redefining the progressive lens fitting paradigm.

Three thematic labels ensure market demands and needs are precisely matched

To facilitate buyer procurement, three special labels were introduced last year: “Smart Ageing Products”, “Green Solutions Suppliers” and “Smart Eyewear”, which were well-received by the industry. These three labels appear again this year to enhance procurement efficiency and highlight exhibitor innovations in the silver economy, sustainability, and smart technology. Selected highlighted products under these labels include:

Smart Ageing Products

  • Chinese Mainland brand MUEDO (Booth: 1D-G05) presents its U10 Dual-Mode Smart Reading Glasses, featuring auto-focusing lenses and hi-fi stereo sound quality. This design addresses a common issue where presbyopic individuals excessively increase volume levels while watching videos or during calls.
  • Japanese exhibitor Sasamata (Booth: GH-C11) presents its ultra-lightweight eye-bow eyewear frame, featuring a stage-controlled flip-up mechanism inspired by scissor-type hinges — perfect for users who constantly put on and take off their reading glasses.

Green Solutions Supplies

  • Founded by a Hong Kong eyewear designer, JLX STUDIO MADE (Booth: GH-C25) focuses on 3D-printed eyewear. The brand blends traditional craftsmanship with digital technology, using eco-friendly 3D-printing to reduce production waste and showcase a sustainable, customised vision for the future of eyewear.

Smart Eyewear

  • Chinese Mainland’s smart eyewear brand LAWAKEN (Booth: 1D-F06) presents its all-in-one AR glasses, LAWK ONE. Equipped with fitness tracking, AR navigation, music and call functionality, it supports first-person perspective 4K ultra HD recording, offering outdoor enthusiasts a hands-free experience and reducing reliance on smartphones.

This year the Green Booth Design Competition encourages exhibitors to incorporate sustainable concepts into their booth designs. Wenzhou Ouhai Glasses Co Ltd (Booth 1B-D18) won the Gold Award, while Micron Eyewear Manufactory Company Limited (Booth 1E-B18) and Jiangsu Xuzhi Optical Glasses Co., Ltd. (Booth 1C-D02) secured the Silver and Bronze Awards respectively. All three winners centered their designs around eco-friendly materials and waste reduction, demonstrating their brands’ commitment to sustainable development.

Expert symposium and design competition foster industry exchange and innovation

A series of events and eyewear parades are held at the fair. Tomorrow (6 November), The 23rd Hong Kong International Optometric Symposium, organised by the HKTDC and co-organised by The Hong Kong Optometric Association and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, will take place with the theme “Age Well, See Well: Redefining Eye Care for the Golden Age”. The symposium is accredited by the Optometrists Board of Hong Kong, and participants attending the full-day conference may be eligible for up to six Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours.

Counterfeit Products Sold Online in Malaysia Threaten Halal Compliance, Consumer Health, and the E-Commerce Sector, Says Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM)

The Muslim Consumers’ Association of Malaysia today expressed deep concern over the emergence of counterfeit health products sold online with fake halal certificates.

Nadzim Johan, Chief Activist of Persatuan Pengguna Islam Malaysia (PPIM), urged the authorities to investigate and take immediate action against the companies involved.

Nadzim warned that if not addressed promptly, these illegal practices could endanger public health and erode the confidence of Muslims in Malaysia regarding syariah compliance and guidance. He also stressed that this issue threatens local syariah-compliant businesses operating on e-commerce platforms.

PPIM has held urgent discussions with Holista Colltech Limited (“Holista”) concerning a recent police report filed by the company in Malaysia.

The report was lodged regarding counterfeit PRISTIN® Omega-3 fish oil products being sold on two popular e-commerce platforms, Lazada and Shopee.

Holista, headquartered in Petaling Jaya and listed on the Australian Securities Exchange, filed the report with the Royal Malaysia Police after obtaining samples of the counterfeit products.

Independent laboratory testing revealed that the counterfeit products were made from low-grade palm oil instead of fish-derived Omega-3.

Holista is Malaysia’s market leader in Omega-3 supplements, sold under two flagship brands – PRISTIN® GOLD OMEGA-3 FISH OIL 1200MG SOFTGEL and PRISTIN® OMEGA-3 FISH OIL 1200MG. Both products are halal-certified.

Nadzim emphasized that Holista’s genuine products are only available through pharmacies licensed by the Ministry of Health Malaysia and via Holista’s official online stores, Alterni.com and Holista.global.

“We are deeply concerned about the emergence of such counterfeit products. With the rapid growth of e-commerce in Malaysia, we fear that other counterfeit cases may exist and remain undetected by the authorities,” said Nadzim.

He further highlighted three critical issues:

1. Halal certification is a core element of the Islamic faith. Any blatant misuse of the halal logo undermines the trust of Muslims in Malaysia and globally in the certification of products, their sources, and production processes.

2. Such counterfeit products deliberately evade regulatory oversight governing supplement safety and compliance. Not only do they fail to support health, but they actively endanger consumers.

3. As a Muslim-majority country with a large young population, Malaysia is a thriving e-commerce market, respected globally for its adherence to Islamic practices and halal compliance. Violations of this nature will have severe repercussions for syariah-compliant businesses if not dealt with decisively.

PPIM has called on the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) – which oversees online activities – and the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM), under the Ministry of Religious Affairs, to investigate the e-commerce platforms used for selling these counterfeit products and to identify the companies or individuals involved.

Nadzim added that industry players, including pharmacy chains and the Malaysian Dietary Supplement Association, should also hold urgent discussions to address growing concerns among consumers, particularly Muslims.

About PPIM

Persatuan Pengguna Islam Malaysia (PPIM) was established in June 1997 by a group of doctors, university lecturers, Islamic academician and individuals, in view of the problems faced by Muslim consumers in identifying Halal products. PPIM is an educational organisation for Muslims about Halal products. Its official website provides Halal and Haram products list, FAQs, forum, downloads, consumer complaint and latest news.

Gome Retail’s H1 2025 Significant Performance Improvement, Debt Resolution Breakthrough, and Accelerated Strategic Transformation

Gome Retail Holdings Limited (HKG: 493, Gome Retail or the Company, together with its subsidiaries, the Group) announced its unaudited six-month results for the six months ended June 30, 2025 (the Reporting Period).

Focusing on the main industry to consolidate the border, breakthrough in debt resolution
In the first half of 2025, the external environment was complex and severe. Structural contradictions persisted in China, while the industry where the Group belongs showed some signs of recovery, they were still in the bottomingout phase. However, since the fourth quarter of last year, national policies have become more proactive, with the introduction of a number of important stimulus policies. The effects of these policies were further realised in the first half of 2025. Benefiting from these policy initiatives, the Group’s revenue, profit, and other indicators improved significantly during the Reporting Period. During the Reporting Period, the Group recorded sales revenue of RMB297 million, a year-on-year increased by 75.74%; Gross profit was RMB20 million, a year-on-year increased by 11.11%; and loss attributable to owners of the parent during the Reporting Period was RMB1,346 million, a year-on-year decreased by 69.63%.

In the first half of 2025, China’s economic growth met expectations. Policy initiatives continued to strengthen, with stimulus measures such as trade-ins and equipment upgrades continuing and expanding in the consumer sector. This has led to a rebound in the growth of durable goods consumption, including home appliances, and initial signs of a bottoming-out recovery in the industry. The Group accelerated its efforts in transformation projects and emerging businesses, including franchise model innovation and car experience centers, achieving progress in each area during the Reporting Period. Debt disposal efforts progressed in an orderly manner during the Reporting Period, the Group actively negotiated debt solutions with various creditors, including financial institutions, suppliers, and convertible bondholders. The Group gradually reduced its debt burden through debt-to-equity swaps, franchise expansion, discussions with banks on debt disposal solutions, and the disposal and sale of non-core assets, and achieved significant progress during the Reporting Period, laying a solid foundation for continued operations.

Continuing to promote the asset-light model, the strategic results are gradually showing
Gome Retail adheres to a strategy of “asset-light, operations-focused, strong control, and replicability,” focusing on sales, revenue, and positive cash flow. Leveraging its supply chain advantages, it optimizes its operating model and details, empowering franchise opportunities. Regarding franchising, the Group continues to expand brand licensing opportunities to franchisees, focusing on supply chain model innovation to assist franchisees in market expansion, avoid high self-development costs, and precisely allocate resources to brand building and user experience. Regarding franchising, the Group continues to strengthen its equity-based partnership model, primarily through the “single-store franchising” format, with the ” urban experience Center” at its core, to build a extensive franchise network for the home appliance and related products. Through supply chain empowerment, asset-light operations, and refined management, the Groups is creating a new model for scenario-based digital marketing.

New business launch accelerates, with the Car Experience Center officially operationalGome Retail is actively cultivating new growth points. The first Gome Car Experience Center Xibahe Store officially opened on April 29, 2025, marking the Group’s official entry into the automobile distribution field. The center has already drawn dozens of mainstream new energy marques, offering early proof that its intensive operating model can lower single store costs and sharpen customer acquisition. Several automakers have responded with concrete partnerships.

Looking ahead, the year 2025 marks the final year of China’s 14th Five-Year Plan. Moreover, the Central Politburo has decided to commence the formulation of the 15th Five-Year Plan ahead of schedule in the second half of this year, in order to accelerate the recovery of domestic demand. As a result, it is expected that there will be more substantial policy support at the national level in the coming months.

Gome Retail management said: “Despite the significant challenges the Group has faced in recent years, management has remained proactive and unwavering in its efforts. Through persistent dedication, the Group achieved its first signs of performance recovery during the Reporting Period and made substantive progress in strategic transformation and the exploration of new business areas. In the second half of the year, we will continue to devote our full efforts to overcoming current challenges as swiftly as possible, thereby laying the groundwork for a sustained recovery.”

Campaign to promote Hong Kong’s advantages in professional services in Vietnam

– Helping service providers seize opportunities in ASEAN and strengthen Hong Kong-Vietnam ties

The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) organised a delegation to Hanoi, Vietnam from 5 to 7 August to promote Hong Kong’s professional services and assist Hong Kong professional service providers in exploring business opportunities.

As Hong Kong’s sixth-largest trading partner and the second largest among ASEAN members, Vietnam has steadily strengthened trade and economic relations with Hong Kong. The delegation aims at further deepening bilateral business ties and introducing Hong Kong’s professional services to local businesses there.

The delegation, co-led by Patrick Lau, HKTDC Deputy Executive Director, and Rimsky Yuen, Chairman of the HKTDC Professional Services Committee Advisory Committee, comprised 19 Hong Kong professionals from various sectors, including accounting, legal, consulting and corporate services.

During the visit, delegate Tim Koo, Director, Normsun Advisory Services Limited, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Institute of Trade and Economics of Vietnam, reflecting a commitment by both sides to strengthen cooperation.

Meetings with Vietnam’s government bodies, industry associations and large local enterprises – such as the Foreign Investment Agency under Ministry of Finance, Kinh Bac Group, National Innovation Center, The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants Vietnam, The Vietnam Association of Certified Public Accountants, Vietnam Bank’s Association, Vietnam International Arbitration Centre and VMO Holdings – provided a plethora of opportunities for Hong Kong delegates to explore cooperation opportunities with their Vietnamese counterparts.

One of the mission highlights, which was the lunch seminar co-hosted by the HKTDC and Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, successfully promoted Hong Kong’s role as a regional centre for professional services and risk management. Attracting over 120 Vietnamese business representatives and professionals, it encouraged local enterprises to collaborate with Hong Kong service providers when expanding their business or managing risks.

At the lunch seminar, Dr Lau said: “This mission is a part of the HKTDC’s new Hong Kong Professionals Plus campaign. We hope to tell the stories of Hong Kong through business delegations and visits as well as promote the strengths of Hong Kong’s professional services sector, while at the same time assist them to better understand the latest developments in the ASEAN markets and to seize business opportunities.”

Mr Yuen stated: “As an international financial centre and a regional hub for professional services, Hong Kong possesses top-tier talents offering world-class legal, financial and consulting services. With extensive experience in facilitating cross-border investments and fund-raising over the years, Hong Kong can meet the development needs of Vietnamese enterprises and assist investors from other countries in seizing opportunities in Vietnam.”

The HKTDC regularly organises business missions across industries. It will continue to conduct outreach activities to promote the advantages of Hong Kong’s professional services, while helping service providers seize more overseas collaboration opportunities.

USPA Global today announced that U.S. Polo Assn., the official brand of the United States Polo Association (USPA), has once again been ranked in the Top 25 on License Global magazine’s list of Top Global Licensors for 2025, and is now ranked the No. 1 sports brand on the prestigious list. U.S. Polo Assn.

U.S. Polo Assn.

U.S. Polo Assn.’s authentic connection to the sport of polo continues to resonate with younger consumers and sports fans around the world, contributing to the brand’s No. 1 sports brand ranking and position within the Top 25 of the Top Global Licensors list for three consecutive years. The sports brand’s strong ranking for this year was based on delivering a record-breaking $2.5 billion in global retail sales in 2024. U.S. Polo Assn.’s worldwide footprint includes over 190 countries in more than 1,100 U.S. Polo Assn. stores, thousands of additional retail locations, more than 12 million social media followers, and over 50 e-commerce sites in 20 languages.

“Earning the No. 1 sports brand ranking while remaining at 23rd on License Global’s Top Licensors list is a powerful validation of our global brand strategy and the tireless work of our USPA Global Team as well as worldwide strategic partners,” said J. Michael Prince, President and CEO of USPA Global, the company that manages and markets the multi-billion-dollar U.S. Polo Assn. brand. “To be ranked alongside some of the most iconic names in sports and fashion reinforces our position as a top-performing global brand with an authentic connection to sport, style, and consumers around the world.”

License Global’s Top Global Licensors list is a “who’s who” of licensing titans, derived from an annual study that “accounts for retail sales of licensed merchandise across all major sectors of business, from entertainment to sport, food and beverage, corporate brands, fashion, art and design, and much more.”

“U.S. Polo Assn. being recognized as the No. 1 sports brand in this year’s ranking in the Top Licensors list from License Global is a direct reflection of the trusted relationships we have built with our strategic global partners,” said Molly Robbins, SVP of Global Licensing and Business Development for USPA Global. “Our strategic focus on collaborative growth, product excellence, and consistent brand storytelling continues to fuel our momentum and drive long-term success in key markets worldwide.”

To be considered for inclusion, each brand or corporate entity must submit retail figures based on worldwide sales of licensed merchandise. In addition, License Global’s editors do their own independent vetting and verification by consulting industry sources, annual reports, and financial documents. The world’s largest brand remains The Walt Disney Company at $62 billion in retail sales, with the fourth largest brand, NBC Universal, at $17 billion, and Warner Bros. Discovery, the sixth largest brand, at $15 billion.

“Looking ahead, I’m very optimistic about U.S. Polo Assn.’s global growth potential. We are on track to surpass $3 billion in sales in the near future and continue to open more store locations in both existing regions and exciting new markets,” added Prince.

HKTDC to release report on Hong Kong Businesses Navigating Mainland China E-commerce Retail Market – Consumer Survey Results

– Mainland consumers favour online shopping for Hong Kong products, view brands as high-quality, reputable and authentic

– 78% of respondents had bought Hong Kong products online in the past year particularly young consumers and those in areas with higher consumption levels.
– Online shoppers hold positive views of Hong Kong products and brands, giving an average score of 8.7 to Hong Kong products.
– Genuine products, reputable merchants and wide product selection are the most important considerations for respondents, over low prices and other factors when purchasing online.
– Mainland online shoppers mostly buy electronic, luxury and fashion goods from Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) released the research report: Hong Kong Businesses Navigating Mainland China E-commerce Retail Market – Consumer Survey Results. The results show that Mainland online shoppers generally like Hong Kong products. Overall, 78% of respondents had bought Hong Kong products online in the past year. Mainland consumers have a high level of trust in Hong Kong brands and hold products in high regard. This provides a solid foundation for Hong Kong businesses to expand into the Mainland e-commerce market. Hong Kong businesses can leverage the advantage of Hong Kong brands and choose suitable platforms for e-commerce sales. The upcoming release of the E-commerce Case Studies report will focus on ways to develop e-commerce retail sales and serve as a reference for Hong Kong businesses looking to expand their market in the Mainland.

HKTDC Director of Research, Irina Fan, said: “Mainland consumers shop online frequently, averaging 9.4 purchases per month. This is particularly true for those in tier-one and Greater Bay Area (GBA) cities. When shopping online, Mainland consumers’ primary consideration is whether the products are genuine, not low prices. This suggests that Hong Kong businesses can leverage the superior quality of Hong Kong products and the strong reputation of Hong Kong brands in Mainland China to expand into the Mainland e-commerce market. They can flexibly use comprehensive shelf and ‘interest-based’ e-commerce platforms to sell online along with methods such as live-streaming and short videos for promotion, and stand out in the highly competitive market through targeted marketing strategies.”

HKTDC Research commissioned an agency to conduct a survey of 2,200 middle-income or above consumers from different Mainland cities during the second and third quarters of 2024. The aim was to learn about their online consumption habits, as well as their preferences regarding Hong Kong products. The findings will help Hong Kong companies better formulate appropriate strategies to tap the Mainland e-commerce retail market.

Online shopping characteristics of Mainland consumers
– Mainland consumers shop online frequently, averaging 9.4 purchases per month. This is particularly true for those in tier-one cities. Shopping frequency among women (10 times monthly) is higher than for men (8.8 times). By age group, consumers aged 30-49 demonstrate the highest online shopping frequency, averaging 11.2 purchases per month.
– Comprehensive e-commerce platforms are the predominant online shopping channel, with 95% of respondents using comprehensive/digital shelf e-commerce platforms to shop online. This figure far exceeds the use of live-streaming/short video platforms (38%) and group buying platforms (32%). In terms of online shopping for cross-border or imported products, consumers prefer to use Tmall International or JD International, with 73% and 63% respectively choosing these platforms. Other notable platforms include Douyin E-commerce Global (30%) and Amazon China (21%).
– Authenticity, wide selection and reputation are top considerations for online shopping. An authenticity guarantee policy (15%), reputable merchants (11%) and wide product selection (9%) are the top three considerations for respondents when purchasing online.
– “Promotion” is the most important factor for consumers when buying newly-launched products online. Nearly 90% of respondents cited “promotion” as their primary consideration, followed by product quality and design (70%).
– Mainland consumers demand quick delivery. Mainland online shoppers, on average, get their products 3.2 days after placing an order, with fast fulfilment a key competitive advantage in winning over local consumers.

Wing Chu, Principal Economist (Greater China) of HKTDC, said: “Although online purchasing power currently clusters around tier-one and tier-two cities, the tier-three cities are becoming a focus for Hong Kong companies. Furthermore, irrespective of whether they are shopping locally or from further afield, consumers generally demand quick delivery, and their expectations in this regard continue to rise. The Hong Kong products that Mainland consumers most like to buy online are consumer electronics and electrical products (72%), followed by luxury goods (46%) and fashion products (41%).” It’s worth noting that Mainland consumers who purchase Hong Kong products online tend to spend a higher average order amount on children’s products, drugs and health supplements, and pet products compared to the overall average.”

Hong Kong products favored by Mainland Consumers
– Mainland online shoppers generally like Hong Kong products, particularly those in areas with higher consumption levels. Overall, 78% of respondents had bought Hong Kong products online in the past year. The proportion was 85% in tier-one cities, 81% in the Greater Bay Area, 78% in tier-two cities and 74% in tier-three cities.
– Hong Kong products are more favoured by young consumers. In terms of age distribution, 83% of respondents in the 18-29 age group said they had bought Hong Kong products online in the past year. This was closely followed by consumers aged 30-49 (82%), while the proportion among consumers above 50 years old was lower (65%).
– Female consumers in high-consumption areas tend to prefer Hong Kong products. While overall gender differences are minimal – 77% of male and 79% of female respondents reported purchasing Hong Kong products – the trend varies by region. In tier-one and tier-two cities, and in the GBA, significantly more female consumers have bought Hong Kong products online.
– Mainland online shoppers hold positive views of Hong Kong products, brands and online stores. The respondents gave an average score of 8.7 to Hong Kong products when compared with other products. Respondents from tier-three cities gave the highest score of 9.2. In terms of age, consumers aged 18-29 gave Hong Kong products the highest rating of 8.9.
– Mainland online shoppers mostly buy electronic, luxury and fashion goods from Hong Kong. The Hong Kong products that Mainland consumers most like to buy online are consumer electronics and electrical products (72%), followed by luxury goods (46%) and fashion products (41%). The GBA has the highest proportion of consumers buying consumer electronics and electrical products (79%), followed closely by tier-one cities (78%). The proportion of consumers buying luxury goods in tier-one cities (53%), the GBA (52%) and tier-two cities (51%) are comparable.
– Orders in food and drug sectors, and of products for children and pets, exceed the overall average. Among Mainland shoppers who have bought Hong Kong products online, the average order value for children’s goods is 24% higher than the average. Orders of drug and health products (16%), pet products (29%), and fresh produce and food (18%) are also significantly higher in value than the average.
– The Hong Kong “brand” enjoys a good reputation in the Mainland market and is widely seen as a mark of trust and quality. When asked to describe Hong Kong merchandise, brands and products, respondents viewed products from Hong Kong as “in compliance with stringent product safety standards” (28%), “guaranteed raw material/material quality” (28%), “guaranteed genuine products” (27%), “confidence in quality” (27%) and “fashionable look” (27%).
– Mainland consumers seek out official brand channels. Mainland consumers obtain information from official brand channels when choosing Hong Kong electronics and electrical products (31%), luxury items (34%), sports products (34%) and fashion products (26%). They rely heavily on product reviews when purchasing Hong Kong drug and health products (34%) and beauty products (32%) online.

Eric Chu, Economist (Greater China) of HKTDC, said: “Based on case studies of e-commerce retailers and service providers in Mainland China, Hong Kong businesses might consider using multi-channel operation strategies. This includes leveraging both traditional digital shelves platforms and emerging ‘interest-based‘ platforms to reach different consumer groups and increase traffic. However, some cases show that while businesses can collaborate with influencers/KOLs for “influencer marketing,” it’s important to base these efforts on market analysis and data to select influencer endorsements that suit their products. This approach improves promotional accuracy and achieves cost-effective, optimal marketing results.”

HKTDC will later release an additional report titled “Hong Kong Businesses Navigating Mainland China E-commerce Retail Market – Case Studies,” which includes detailed case studies of e-commerce activities and service providers in Mainland China.

The second Hong Kong Shopping Festival aims to help local businesses navigate Mainland China e-commerce
The second Hong Kong Shopping Festival, organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) will take place on Mainland e-commerce platforms from 1 to 31 August. Fully aligned with measures outlined in the 2024 Policy Address, the festival aims to support Hong Kong’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as they expand into the Mainland e-commerce market. As the flagship event of HKTDC’s E-commerce Express, the second Hong Kong Shopping Festival has attracted nearly 260 brands across seven major categories, including health supplements, food and beverages, home and living, personal care and cosmetics, apparel and accessories, smart gadgets, and products for the silver market. The festival features over 500 unique products and offers month-long discount promotions.
